DESIGN IDEATION

Page 11: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

VIEWS OF USERS Student:

Generally uses SMS or web on his/her phone

Thinks that an SMS or Web app is a good idea

Residents:Do not use SMS or web on there phone

frequentlyPrefers an IVRS over SMS based system

Elder persons Do not use SMS or web at allPrefers display boards on bus stops

Page 12: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

VIEWS OF USERS (2) School Kids:

Dose not have a mobile phoneThinks information should be displayed on

the bus stops with occupancy level Visitors:

Thinks that the information needs to be displayed at the entrance

A map of routes with all details will be appreciated

Page 13: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

BASIC IDEA Goal: User should be able to use the

information for Easily accessing the running information of

tumtumsMaking an informed decision for ‘wait or

not to wait’Minimizing the total traveling time

No single user-end solution can cater to the need of all the users

A hybrid information system is required

PROTOTYPE

Page 15: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

OUTLINE OF THE IDEA The tum tums are tracked using

timetable The information is stored on a

centralised server The information is displayed to users by

different means SMS/web application IVRS systemsElectronic display boards

TRACKING OF TUMTUMS Tum-tum timetable can be created

Start time, Expected end timeStart location, End location

Estimation of time taken from one stop to anotherDuring peak hoursDuring normal hoursNight hours

This information can be used to predict the approximate position of the tum-tums

Page 18: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

CENTRAL SERVER

Page 19: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

CENTRAL SERVER (2) Keeps track of all the buses.

Tum-tum running timetable Maintains information of the following:

Bus routesBus stopsEstimated transit time between stops.Start time of bus when it leaves its

stationary place.

Page 20: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

SMS / WEB BASED APP

Page 21: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

SMS / WEB BASED APP (2) A user can send an SMS in either of

these formatsbetween <stop1> <stop2>crossing <stop>

An additional parameter <time> can also be allowed to find tum-tums at a specified time

The server responds with info about the next 2 tum-tums corresponding to the query

Page 22: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

SMS / WEB BASED APP (3) Web Interface

Provide a web based portal to access information about the tum-tums

Real Time tracking on a Map can also be implemented Rail Radar

Mobile ApplicationDevelop an app which can support the web

based functions

Page 23: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

IVRS SYSTEM

Page 24: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

IVRS SYSTEM (2) Every bus stop assigned a number A user can call the IVRS

Choose their languageEnter the start bus stop numberEnter the end bus stop numberGets the timings and routes of next two

tumtums Or a user can

Choose their languageEnter the start bus stop numberGets the timings and routes of next two

tumtums from that bus stop

Page 25: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

ELECTRONIC DISPLAY BOARDS

Page 26: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

ELECTRONIC DISPLAY BOARDS (2) Electronic display boards can be

installed at every bus stop Important bus stops with junctions get

bigger boardsMG, YP, LSH13, H5, Convo, H15-16

Other bus stops requires only small size display boardsSingle line boards

Page 27: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

ELECTRONIC DISPLAY BOARDS (3) One other display board at LCH building

To display timings of tumtums from nearby stops

Students can choose their routes from classes

The information is displayed in same manner as in Mumbai local stations<Destination> <Via> <Time> <Occupancy

level>

Page 28: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

MAP OF ROUTES Map showing all the tumtum routes

should be displayed at Main Gate and YP gateHelps the new comers to figure the system

outAny change in routes will also be visible to

daily users Details of the SMS/ IVRS system should

be displayed Mapping of routes should be done

1A :- MG to H13 via H8 2A :- MG to H13 via H1

USABILITY EVALUATION

Page 30: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

USER PROBLEMS Existing system poses these problems

to the users No readily available information about tum-

tum timingsTum-tum routes not knownDon’t know if the arriving tum-tum is full or

notTime-wastage if the person waits without

info.

Page 31: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

HEURISTIC EVALUATION How our system tackles these issues :

Make tum-tum timing information easily accessible via Display boards SMS Internet

Maps at important places : Main gate, YP gate, Lakeside gate

Display crowd level along with tum-tum timing

Page 32: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

HEURISTIC EVALUATION(2) Goals for the design

Easy access to tum-tum timing informationMinimize time-wastage

Our design provides this information User can decide to wait for a tum-tum or

not Ultimately, reduces time wasted due to

waiting

Page 33: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

USER TESTING Design cannot be tested without an

actual implementation We conducted user reviews about the

designPositive feedbackStudents eager to use SMS/Mobile appsNon tech-savvy people found the idea of

SMS/apps confusingMumbai-local type display board liked by

everyone

OCCUPANCY LEVEL Three buttons near the driver

Green: EmptyYellow: Moderately fullRed: Overloaded

Information transmitted to local server Shown along with running information One other way!

Page 36: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

COLLABORATIVE EFFORT Trust the users! If they are getting useful information

they might be willing to provide useful information

A guy in a tumtum can use his phone to update the occupancy level of a bus on a portal

No single person is responsible Can be unreliable but worth a try!

Page 37: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

DISPLAY IN TUMTUMS LED displays

should be used in place of current boards

Display should be onFrontBack Side (near the door)

Improves night visibility also

Page 38: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

REAL TIME TRACKING OF TUM TUMS

GPS tracking NFC tracking

A GPS tracking device can be placed in every tum-tum.

GPS determines the current location of a tum-tum using GPS satellites

The recorded location is transmitted to a central server

A RFID tag to be placed in every tum-tum with a specific identifier.

RFID scanners to be placed at every bus stop

Any bus crossing the stop is detected at the stop and is recognised using the identifier

Page 39: An Information System For Tum Tums presentation-3

OTHERS There should be a updated route map in

every tumtum Update the route maps on current bus

stopsCurrent information is not visibleAnd also out-dated

Dynamic timetable of tum tumsAs per requirementsTrack number of people waiting at a stop
