Basic ideas

• Is a monotheistic religion based on the recognition of Jesus of Nazareth as its founder and central figure.

• They believe in the Bible, they consider trismite "the word of God". The Bible has been translated into 2.303 diferents languages. We have a lot of ways to interpret the Bible and because of this we can se a lot of differences in the christian religion.

• The three christian largest groups in the worldare Roman Catholic Church,Eastern Orthodox church, and various churches of Protestantism.

• The most important is Roman Catholic Church.

Differences of the three largests groups

• The diferences about the three importants groups of Christianity are: Roman Catholic Church recognizes the Pope as the infallible and he has authority over all churches. Eastern Orthodox church doesn’t believe that the leader has all the grant with supreme authority over all churches. Protestantism believe that the doctrines of various Protestant denominations change, but most of non-denominational doctrines include justification by grace through faith and not through works, known as Sola Fide, the priesthood of all believers, and the Bible as the ultimate authority in matters of faith and order, known as Sola Scriptura.

History

• Christianity “travelled” to America in 1492, with Christopher Columbus. Before that date, it just was important in Europe and it couldn't expand overland to Asia or Africa because the muslim states prevented that controlled the intermediate territories. After the arrival to America, the european expansion in Africa and Asia was in the maritime routes, then Christianity was expanded in all the world.

Christianity in America

• Christianity in America is very diverse and there are a lot of different groups that understand the Christianity very differently, but they accept the Bible as a holy book and Jesus Christ as a guide, they identify themselves as Christians.

• However, there are more than 1500 different Christian faith groups in America

• Today in America, about 89% of adults identify themselves as Christians.

• The most importants groups in America are the three largest groups of Christianity in general

Basic information

• The Afro American culture is an important culture in the USA

• Most of the Afro American people are christians but there is people who do believe in islam, in budhism or in ancient african religions

• This culture was developed in America by the african slaves and their descendants in various countries of Latin america, the Caribbean, and parts of the United states

• It derives from African traditional religions and cultures, especially of West and Central Africa

Origins

• This culture was introduced in America by the african slaves. • The social margination of African slaves made easier the retention of

significant elements of their traditional culture, although the slaves owners didn’t want to and tried to prevent it, but they couldn’t

• The oral tradition helped a lot to keep this culture alive, it has been the way to do it

• Afro american culture was formed over the time by american influences mixed with african influences • This culture has been depeloping

until this days and it stills doing it• African-American culture has

become a significant part of American culture and at the same time, remains a distinct cultural thing

Black church• The term black church or African-American church refers to Christian churches for African-

American congregations in the United States, but there are also black churches destinated to white people

• Most of the first black congregations and churches were formed before 1800. They were founded by free blacks, and the oldest one is in Kentucky

• After slavery was abolished, free blacks continued establishing separate congregations and having a different way of understanding both cultures ( Afro american and American)

• Those segregationist attitudes discouraged and, especially in the South, prevented African-Americans from worshiping in the same churches as whites.

• African American churches have been the centers of communities or have “worked” as school sites in the early years after the Civil War,

• The black churches helped a lot in the battleagainst racism, and thanks to them the slaverywas abolished

• The black church continues to be a source of support for members of the African-American community.

Gospel music

• This religious music was created by the african american congregations in the USA churches (the ones created by and for them). It happened in the 18th century and it became popular during the 1930

• The original word is Godspell, which is translated as "God announces" This way of singing is evangelic, to invite people to god. The lyrics reflect the values of Christian life.

• The traditional gospel is the one that basically hasbeen in the United States and is usually interpretedby a choir, which may have one or more solists and usually a capella choirs

• There are different tipes of gospel ( gospel rap, southern gospel…) but the black gospel consists of a spiritual song with african rhythms. There are many vocals, the lyrics are accompanied by rhythmic clapping and a movement by the singers.although gospel music is an American phenomenon, has spread around the world

• Native americans migrate from Siberia over 11000 years ago. Then, many groups of people from Asia and South America went with them.

• Tribes built cities. Tribes subsisted by simple hunting and fishing

History includes battels between tribes. Rich in rivalries and alliances• When European explorers settled the continent, they were

joined by a common enemy (exeptions)• A lot of them died because of setter’s small pox• Trail of Tears : they were forced to march westward, many died

on the way

Religion

• Nature, animals and landscape play a major role in the religion.

• Native American religion includes a number of practices, ceremonies, and traditions.

• Symbolism, especially with animals, is often a common part of Native American religion.

• Some Native American tribes used animals to tell the story of creation.

• In the past, Native American religion was not classified as a religion.

Dance

• Unique dance style

• Usually for familiar gatherings, ceremonies, marriages.. • Also for intended to help the harvest, and those

reserved for religious ceremonies.• For fun• Each tribe has its own distinct

dance which sets them apart(they are a lot in USA and canada)• They participate in pow wows.

Stories

• Rich in meaning• Nature and animals are the theme• They are told, sung and danced• They survived for generations

• The apache creation myth: Darkness, a creator, one who lives above, creates the light, the sunset and sunrise, and three gods : Sun-god, little girl and Small boy…

Woman

• They were so important! They were builders, warriors, fartwoman, farmers..• They hunt buffalo with their husbands, Skinned the animal and then, cooked

it.• They cared for their husband and children• Native american woman were medicine, as man were.• People prefered them to heal the people or ill soul • because they could connect with spirit world.• There was a feeling of mutual respect between the • men and women of the tribes• THEY WERE ESSENTIAL FOR THE TRIBES!
