Modern periodic table
The modern periodic table is the improved version of Mendeleev’s periodic table
Moseley modified Mendeleev’s periodic law accordingly
a. Properties of elements depend on their atomic number.
b. When elements are arranged in the ascending order of their atomic numbers there is a repetition of their properties at fixed intervals.
About the modern periodic table
ATOMIC NUMBER
The total number of electrons/protons present in an atom is called atomic number.
VALANCY It is the number of electrons donated, accepted or
shared to attain stability
1. There are 18 groups and 7 periods in the modern periodic table
2. Group-The vertical columns in the periodic table are called groups
3. Periods-The horizontal rows are called periods
4. Smallest period : 1st period 5. Largest period : 6th period6.
In the modern periodic table elements are divided in to three types
1. Metals2. Non metals3. Metalloids
1. S-block2. P-block3. d-block4. f-block
The elements are arranged in four blocks S-BLOCK
d-BLOCK
P-BLOCK
f-BLOCK
REPRESENTATIVE ELEMENTS
The elements of the group 1,2 and 13 to 18 ie, s and p block elements are called representative elements.
Some of their characteristics are,
Show periodic repetition of electronic configuration. There are elements belonging to different categories
like metals, non- metals, and metalloids. There is representation for elements in various
physical state. Similar properties are exhibited within the group.
The elements in group 3 to 12 that is the d-block elements are called transition elements.
TRANSITION ELEMENTS
Fourteen elements coming after lanthanum in sixth period of periodic table is called LANTHANONES /LANTHALNIDES
LANTHANONES
Fourteen elements coming after actinium in seventh period of periodic table is called actinones/actinides.
ACTINIDES
The noble gases make a group of chemical elements with similar properties.
They are all odorless, color less, monatomic gases with very low chemical reactivity.
The six noble gases that occur naturally are helium (He),neon (Ne),argon (Ar),krypton (Kr),xenon (Xe), and the radioactive radon (Rn).
For the first six periods of the periodic table, the noble gases are exactly the members of group 18 of the periodic table.
It is possible that due to relativistic effects, the group 14 element flerovium exhibits some noble-gas-like properties,
NOBLE GAS
The f-block elements are called innertransition elements that is the Actinoids and Lanthanoids.
