· A symphony orchestra is a large group of about 80 players. There are instruments of all the families ( Strings, Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion)

El término orquesta se deriva de un término griego que se usaba para nombrar a la zona frente al escenario destinada al coro y significa "lugar para danzar“.

Interpretan música sinfónica: sinfonías (con 4 movimientos o partes), conciertos (3 movimientos para solista y orquesta), poemas sinfónicos, música de cine, etc.

• The string family has instruments that produce sounds by the vibration of the strings. There are four kinds of stringed instruments in the orchestra: violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. All are made of wood and have a similar curvy shape, but their sizes are different.

• Un instrumento de percusión es un instrumento cuyo sonido se produce al ser golpeado, sacudido o raspado.

• The main instruments of the percussion family in the orchestra are the timpani, the xylophone, cymbals, the triangle and the bass drum.

INSTRUMENTOS DE VIENTO METAL / BRASS FAMILY

• The brass family has instruments that produce sound by vibration of the lips as the player blows into a tubular resonator.

• They are called Trumpet, French horn, Trombone and Tuba.

• Estos instrumentos están normalmente hechos de metal, pero también pueden estar hechos de madera. Los instrumentos de viento-metal que participan en la orquesta son: la trompeta, la trompa, el trombón y la tuba.

• Los instrumentos de viento-madera están hechos de metal, ébano o marfil. Los instrumentos de esta familia que se tocan en una orquesta son: el flautín o piccollo,la flauta travesera, el oboe, el clarinete, corno inglés y fagot.

• Woodwind instruments use vibrating air to produce many different musical sounds. They look like long sticks, and players blow air into them to create sounds. The different shape and materials of each instrument help to create its unique sound. t

• Chamber music is a form of classical music, written for a small group of instruments.This music can be played in small rooms.

• La orquesta de cámara es una orquesta de instrumentos de cuerda y alguno de viento. Suele tener alrededor de 10 componentes. Interpretan piezas barrocas y clásicas llamadas:

• Sonata: cuando la obra esta escrita para un instrumento o para un pequeño conjunto.

• Cuarteto, quinteto, sexteto, etc..: cuando es para una agrupación de cámara de cuatro, cinco, seis … instrumentos.

• Sinfonías de la época clásica.

ORQUESTA DE JAZZ/JAZZ ORCHESTRA

• Suele estar compuesta por clarinetes, saxofones, trompetas, trombones, contrabajo, batería, piano y un/a cantante. En este caso se trata de Música vocal e instrumental. Interpretan Jazz, que es un estilo de música afroamericana que se caracteriza por la improvisación sobre un tema standard.

• It’s a style of popular music. This style was born in New Orleans (USA).

• “Rock and roll” began in fiftees. It´s mainly for a younger audience.

• La orquesta de rock suele tocar en locales cerrados o/y en macroconciertos. En el rock suelen utilizarse para acompañar al cantante, 2 guitarras ( una solista y otra de acompañamiento), la batería y el bajo.

LAS BANDAS BRASS BANDS

• The brass band is a group of musicians who play woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments.

• Symphony brass bands: Sometimes cello and double bass play in Brass Bands.

• Las bandas son propias de procesiones, desfiles militares y fiestas populares.

• Una rondalla(estudiantina o tuna) es una agrupación de instrumentos de pulso y plectro (púa o pajuela). Se tocan laúdes, mandolinas, bandurrias.

• Guitars, lutes, and other instruments play the melody and percussion instruments can play the rhythm.

• A choir is a group of people who sing together. The singers sing different musical parts depending on how hih or low their voices are.

• .Orfeón: Coro de más de 100 componentes. En España son muy conocidos el Orfeón Donostiarra y el Orfeón Pamplonés.

CHOIRS- Son coros formados sólo por

mujeres. Los integran las voces de soprano, mezzosoprano y contralto ( soprano, mezzo and alto in English).

COROS MASCULINOS/MALE CHOIRS

- These choirs are made up only of men: Its vocal ranges are tenor, baritone and bass.

• La escolanía es un coro de niños y niñas. Generalmente llamado coro de voces blancas. Pueden cantar a capella o con acompañamiento de instrumentos.
