Skimming is used to quickly identifythe main ideas of a text. Skimming isdone at a speed three to four timesfaster than normal reading.

“Comprehension comes first.”


Faster comprehension, not faster reading

Defining word groups and not individual words

Try to stop verbalizing and re-reading

Attach to the idea of what you’re reading and let go of individual words


“He thinks it’s going to rain.”

The key to comprehension is: THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU READ.


Visualize

Try to visualize the concepts

Glance at each phrase and visualize a snapshot in your mind’s eye

Concentrate on meaningful ideas as you read

Don’t worry, speed will come.


Adjectives and word groups


Conceptualize

Thought-units and more meaningful than individual words

Reading groups of up to 7 words at a time may seem strange but …

Reading one word at a time is inefficient


Exercise

Take your time to visualize each thought-unit in each of the sentences below, and then practice re-reading this while concentrating on these images.

• “The shipment was delayed in India.” • “Last year, our sales force doubled in

lunch?” • “Do you think it’s dangerous for us to

What is scanning?

Scanning is another useful tool for speeding up your reading.

Unlike skimming, when scanning, you look only for a specific fact or piece of information without reading everything.

Like when you look for your favorite show listed in the cable guide, for your friend’s phone number in a telephone book, and for the sports scores in the newspaper.

How to skim

Use the same structured process when skimming

Follow the ‘Intro-Body-Conclusion’ format with both paragraphs and articles

Read the Introduction, the conclusion to get the general idea and then skim to allow snapshots to appear in your mind’s eye.

At the end of each topic sentence, your eyes should drop down through the rest of the paragraph, looking for important

pieces of information, such as names, dates, or events.
