PROGRESS UPDATE PLAN FOR NEXT MONTH / WEEK (Including Possible Contingency Plans If Problems Anticipated)

Mon W/B 01/09/15(Detailed Weekly Summary)

Had the choice as to whether we will make a music video, newspaper, film or a documentary. After a discussion of the briefs, we got into groups and decided which one we were going to do.


I did some research into music videos such as ‘Wake me up when September ends’ – Green Day, ‘Call the shots’ – Girls Aloud, and ‘Knives Out’ – Radiohead, ‘Until the morning comes’ – Tindersticks. These videos were looked at so I could learn more about different types of videos such as narrative videos and performance based video. I’ve also looked into lyrics of songs such as Stone Roses – ‘Bye bye badman’ and identified parts which you could portray metaphorically in a music video. Me and my group have looked at different genres, artists and songs and all agreed on ‘Halsey – Hold me down’ and have chosen to create a more narrative video and have begun to think of ideas of how we could portray phrases in the lyrics metaphorically.

We will continue our planning of the video by creating a story board with our ideas of what props to use and what scenes to create in our music video.


I’ve been looking at other music videos for ideas and inspiration as to what we could include in our music video. I was particularly interested in another one of Halsey’s songs music video: “Ghost” as, as a group, we were all interested in the lighting used. I’ve also looked into other music videos such as Taylor Swift and Lana Del Ray.

This week we have focused on discussing where we are going to go as a group for our test shots and where to film our music video and have a look at characters and costumes. As a group, we took a camera and walked around iconic places in Manchester such as Afflecks Palace which we found relevant to our music video, taking test shots and photographs and having an overall look at locations. Whilst in Affleck’s Palace, we also had a look at

We will be attempting to get in contact with Halsey’s manager Jason Aron by finding his details on Halsey’s official Facebook page. We will send him an email asking for permission to use Halsey’s song.


I have been using Photoshop to experiment with some ideas which I could use for my ancillary tasks.

Analyse digipacks


This week I have written up my mind map into a word document to explain more the process of our ideas as to what we are going to include in our video and why we chose the song we have chosen.


I have analysed 3 digipacks so I could gather my ideas as to what needs to be included such as iconography etc. I have also looked into more music adverts to see what I could possibly include in my ancillary of an advert

I’ve analysed 3 music adverts from magazines looking at the Gutenberg principle and techniques which I will need to look into when designing my ancillary task.

Plan video more in depth

We have started to create a story board to gather our ideas more in depth as to what we will include in the music video and the order which we want it to be like.


This week we have been focusing on planning more when we are going to film our music video and gathering our props together to create a contextual type of narrative.

Starting to film smaller and contextual parts of the video such as match stick and doing makeup. Analysed 2 music videos to give me an idea of what artists would include. I also started to plan for 1 week’s production by focusing on things like locations and props.

current we have only completed the beginning of the video.


A lot time this week was allocated to planning another day of filming; the initial plan is to film Abbey (The Antagonist) in a park playing in the snow. The antagonist will have dark eye makeup to reflect her toxic nature with the white snowy background intended to represent the protagonist’s purity.

In the upcoming week we plan to develop our ancillary, in order to do so the group will require more images as at current there is not a sufficient amount of images to form our idea.


X-MAS BREAK- MOCK WEEK WAS PREV IOUS WEEK


We began taking more images for our ancillary and two tasks with a large proportion of the images being intended for the digipak, with shots of the local park being taken in order to match the clip of the antagonist in the park.

The plan for the week ahead is to begin putting our clips into the editing software and edit them down in order to see how fluent and cohesive our clips look.


We planned out and established a narrative arc for the video whilst also beginning to edit some of the more recent shots that have been taken.

The aim for the video is to have it completed by March which will enable us to dedicate more time to the other tasks, in order to fulfil this we plan to take more conceptual shots for the video.


Within this week we filmed further conceptual clips as we intend to use these to develop and illustrate the theme within the video; we also completed practice shots and test shots for the blog.

For the next week we intend to begin editing the images for our ancillaries, with the aim being to create a strong black and white image that conveys the intended theme.


Over the week we allocated our time to our ancillaries, we added our desired effect to the image (Black and White) and edited our bokeh shots.

To meet the deadline we intend to edit the ancillaries whilst also capturing footage for the video.


We continued to capture shots for the video; the shots from the bath have been planned out with the plan being to have a colour splash effect. The bath will be in black and white with the surrounding objects in colour. Bokeh effect and close ups will be used throughout

Further pictures are required for the ancillary tasks. We also need to establish the relevant theories for the video. With a particular look into genre, narrative and representation.



Time this week was used to create a solid foundation for the video; the beginning is almost completed with the end of the video also starting to fall in place.

Rather than using the week to take pictures for the ancillary, we decided to move that to the following week in order to spend time perfecting the start.


Within the week more images were taken for the ancillary as the current images were not sufficient, further planning was also done so we knew where we were going with the ancillary. Other than this we also completed tasks related to question 1A of the exam to help us understand the structure and exam technique.

The plan for the following week is to capture more footage; at current we need more bath shots and walking shots.


As planned we completed more bath shots, with candles lit around the subject. The purpose of this being to convey calmness and cleanliness, with the protagonist ridding herself of the bad things she did whilst in the presence of the Antagonist.

Next week we have set out to create a plan for each of the ancillary’s, with the hope being that we can also start to edit the final pieces.


The week was dedicated to our ancillary for the digipak; the pictures taken off antiquated buildings in Manchester came in use for the task. Screenshots were also taken off the video, with the picture of the protagonist hair underwater being used.

Our intention for the following week is to solidify our exam knowledge for question 1B, in order to create a high quality response for a question.


We developed our knowledge of question 1B further whilst also editing our video. A first draft of the video has now been completed with the group proposing that we have the second draft finished before our next set of mocks.

Over the next week we are going to finish the response to question 1B and complete the second draft for our music video to a higher standard than the first.


The response to question 1B was completed, with this assisting me in understanding the paper as a whole. The second draft for our video also neared compilation, with the “middle” of the video being clarified.

A lot needs to be done in the coming week; we hope to finish the second draft and to capture more bath shots and shots of the protagonist walking through Manchester.


The bath footage was completed with the lighting issues that we had previously noticed being irradiated, which will help us to develop the necessary fluidity. Furthermore we captured footage of historical buildings within Manchester and more shots of the protagonist walking. Lastly we uploaded a survey to survey monkey and completed an analysis based on the ten replies that

Next week we plan to continue filming and editing footage, the aim is to have our ancillary’s completed and for the relevant market research to be done.

Over the weekend the market research report was completed along with any other outstanding research that I needed to complete.

The plan for the following week is to complete our evaluation and begin the completion of any outstanding tasks.


During the week we completed our first draft for the ancillary and started to develop the second draft. Although the images for the digipack and advert were sufficient we experimented with them in order to give them a more professional look.

Time within the next week will be split two ways we aim to finish the second draft for the ancillary whilst also filling in any gaps that there are within the final draft of the video.

Although before half term we believed we were coming up to our final edit we decided to upload an unfinished edit to YouTube in order to see what comments we would receive, not only did this flag up issues within the video. But it also helped us to complete our evaluation question 3 and update our survey.

After some issues were noticed we have decided to re-capture them, as in the final draft we need a sophisticated and professional look to our product.


The final clips were filmed and the editing for the music video was finalised, with the errors being replaced with new footage.

Next week we will have one last check over the video and providing that all goes well upload it to YouTube.
