Adults with Disabilities Marry, Hold Jobs

When Dr. Philip H. Levy of New York first started working with adults who have disabilities, institutionalization was the norm. Many professionals felt that people with disabilities could not navigate the world. Some inpatients were institutionalized as small children and never had the chance to live with their families or enjoy normal activities. Dr. Philip H. Levy fought to change that mindset and create social programs that would allow people with disabilities to live with their families or independently in apartments.

Adults with Disabilities Marry, Hold JobsToday, people across the country thrive thanks to Dr. Levy’s work on behalf of people with disabilities. A recent Washington Post article highlighted one such couple. They grew up going to public high schools, taking active roles in their communities, and living with their families. As adults, they moved into apartment-style living arrangements where they learned to navigate public transit, thrive in a workplace, and manage chores and shopping. The couple featured in the article recently married in an interfaith ceremony. While they receive visits from social workers, they live happy, fulfilling lives, complete with work, family, and friends. Without the work of Dr. Philip H. Levy, they might have been denied this chance to thrive.
