National Law Institute University, Bhopal

NLIU has earned a front line status of an institution imparting quality legal education. In its brief journey of less than a decade, it has been able to carve a niche for itself. The University now stands as one of the most reputed legal institutions in the country and it has been rated as one of the three best law universities in the country. The patron of the university is the Hon. Chief Justice of India and the university works closely with the High Court of Madhya Pradesh, as well as the neighbouring National Judicial Academy. The university admits only 80 undergraduates out of around 20,000 candidates each year through the Common Law Admission Test (C.L.A.T.)

Accomplishments • NLIU is represented in international moot court competitions, including the Willem C. Vis International Commercial

Arbitration Moot Court organised at Vienna and Hong Kong, the Stetson International Environmental Law Moot Court in Florida and the Phillip C. Jessup International Moot Court held at Washington D.C. It has won commendable awards in many moot court competitions. The University is regularly represented in the Harvard Model United Nations. It hosts the R.K. Tankha Memorial National Moot Court Competition annually.

• The Centre for Advanced Studies and Research on Intellectual Property (CASRIP) at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA, offers scholarships to two students every year to attend a summer workshop on intellectual property. Fifteen students have been awarded this scholarship till date. Various other scholarships have been regularly endowed upon the students of the Institute which entitle them to financial aid, and training and internship opportunities.

• A significant number of students pursue advanced degrees after graduation. In previous years, students have earned degrees from institutions such as Harvard Law School, Columbia Law School, the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, New York University School of Law, the London School of Economics, National University of Singapore, Indian Institute of Management and Jawaharlal Nehru University. Students have also won the coveted Commonwealth scholarships and ErasmusMundus scholarships to study abroad.

About ADRC

• The Alternative Dispute Resolution Cell (ADRC) of National Law Institute University was instituted in the month of March 2007. Since its inception the cell has done commendable work under the guidance of the ADR Cell’s Teacher – in – charge and the student members. ADRC has a 40 member strong team of able and committed students from all the batches of NLIU. Below is a list of activities conducted by the ADRC since its commencement.

• The ADR Cell of NLIU is currently the most successful ADR Cell at any Law School in the country. To date, NLIU has also been the most successful Indian University at several International Mediation or Arbitration Competitions. The following presentation covers a few such competitions.

• In 2008-09 the Cell also hosted India’s Former President Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam for his lectures at the Unviersity.

The I nternational Commercial Mediation Competition is an annual moot mediation competition organized by the I CC I nternational Court of Arbitration and is one of the most prestigious Dispute Resolution Competitions around the World.

The Competition began in 2006 and since then only a select few universities f rom across the globe manage to participate in the competition based on their credentials in the f ield of ADR. NLI U has consistently been participating in the competition since 2008 and earned accolades at the competition.

I nternational Law School Mediation Tournament

It would be the first time that a team from India participated in this competition. N.L.I.U won the Outstanding New Team Award

I.N.CAfter winning the National Negotiation Competition, the students went on to represent India at INC 2009, held at John Marshall Law School, Chicago. The students performed brilliantly and were adjudged as the fifth best team in the competition.

The team representing NLIU stood 5th in this prestigious competition organised by HHL and Harvard Law School and defeated many institutions includeing Harvard Law School as well as the National Law School of India University (NLSIU).

WorkshopsFrom 17th – 19th April 2007, ADRC in collaboration with the American Center, Mumbai conducted a three day National Level Training Program on ADR Education in Law Schools and The Role of ADR in Global Judicial Reform. The Speakers were . Dean Hiram E Chodosh, S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah, USA and . . Prof J ames RHolbrook, Clinical Professor of Law, S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah, USA. During the program,

. Ms Elizabeth Kauf fman, Director, American Center, Mumbai was also present.

The ADR Cell is looking forward for conducting more academic programmes with experts in the field to train the students in the in the ADR processes and to send them to various national and international competitions.
