MARTÍNEZ SOLER VISITS IES PEDRO JIMÉNEZ , IN BAZA

Last 27th April, Martínez Soler, the Director of the popular and free newspaper “ 20minutes”, gave two lectures at IES Pedro Jiménez Montoya. During his visit, he also spent some time with a group of bilingual students talking about his experience as to learning languages.

JOSE ANTONIO

It was a very interesting conversation with Jose, he was very nice. It was a very good detail from him come and speak to us.

JUAN PABLO

I liked that he came to tell us about this interesting things.

PACO

The man who came here was very funny and his English was very clear.

JOSE VALLEJO

The person who came yesterday was from Almeria, but he studied (where?)

ALBERTO

He was an interesting person, funny and serious at the same time. I liked that he came here, as he had very interesting stories to tell us. It was really kind of him to come and visit us.

MARIO

He studied in Harvard and when he was studying , his English was elementary but he said he was an expert in English so as to get a fellowship in Harvard.

ANTONIO

He’s the “boss” of 20 minutes, and he has been the editor of other newspapers. His wife is from Boston and used to work for the Wall Street Journal in Spain.

ANA

He went to Cambridge University and he learnt a lot of English. His wife is from Boston. He has lived in New York and he loves this city, now he works in a magazine called “20 minutes” and he has worked for other magazines and newspapers such as Cambio 16, el País, etc.

IRENE

He lived in New York in the 70s. There he met his wife. Now he’s the director of 20 minutes. He studied Economics and teaches at Almeria University. After finishing his studies, he became a journalist.

JOSE LUIS

He took some courses at Harvard University, and had to learn a lot of English, with his wife’s help. He has lived in United States for a long time and he is a very good journalist. Now he is the boss of 20 minutes, one of the most-widely read magazines in Spain.

FRAN

When he had to go to Harvard University in ten days, he didn’t know how to speak and write English very well, but he filled in a form to apply for a scholarship and said that he could speak it and write it excellently, in order to be elected for the course- he lied, well he exaggerated. So his wife had to teach him English, which was not difficult for her as she was from Boston. He had to learn English in ten days, ten hours per day, one hundred hours! But finally he managed to learn English and

speak it very well. Finally he went to Harvard University. During his stay he had to give a few lectures in English, and the problem was that although he could speak English , he didn’t understand the questions people asked him, so his wife would sit at the front and whispered the question to him (but in Spanish, so that he could understand and answer back)

MARIA H

He told us a story about his English.

MARIA M.

He went to New York and he didn’t know how to speak English.

RAMÓN

JULIO

He learned English in a few months. He even could teach at University.

CARLOS

He has been living and working in New York, and he told us that it is a very beautiful city. He also told us about his work as a journalist and gave us some advice; for example, he told us that if you want to become a journalist, the first thing you have to do is to study a career – Econocmics, Law, History, etc..- and then study journalism because journalism is an arts and crafts thing , you learn the profession by working as a journalist but it is better if you can specialize yourself in some kind of field. In his case, he studied Economics and in fact he teaches Economics at Almeria University . Finally , he encouraged us to learn English because

this is the international language and it will give us a lot of opportunities.

CINTHIA

He is working in a newspaper called “20 minutes”. He has been living in America and has got a son.

LUCIA

He is a journalist, and works for 20 minutes, an Andalusian newspaper. He’s got a wife and has lived in New York.

ALMUDENA

He is the director of a newspaper. His wife had to teach him English because he got a fellowship to take a course at Harvard University but his level was elementary. He lived in New York for quite a long time, and he thinks that it is a beautiful city. New York is a sort of melting pot of cultures.
