8 CAREEROPPORTUNITIES FOR

STUDENTS

One question I often get from Students is:

WHICH COURSE SHOULD I STUDY…and my best answer has and is still

‘I DON’T KNOW’!

The last time I checked, we have over 500 courses in

Nigerian universities…so how do I pick one at random and

say…this is for You?

However, here is a Guide for Students; either studying for a Job or to start a Business.

Whether you study for job or to start a business; human beings are your target

audience – and your course of study must be relevant to their needs.

FOOD SHELTERCLOTHING

FOODFood is one of the most essentials of life –

we can’t leave without it!

Nigeria spends Billions

on importation of Food

items every year. With

our ever growing

population, we need to

be able to produce

what we eat.

There are several courses Students can study in order to become a

Food Provider for Nigeria – Food science or Food Technology

readily come to mind. Check the Joint Admissions and

Matriculation Board (JAMB) brochure for several other courses.

CLOTHINGCheck on the Street, how many people do you

see? How many are without clothes? That is how

important cloth is!Clothing is applicable to both the Old and the

Young – the market space is as large as the

population of any country.

While there is no University degree in clothing

or Fashion in Nigeria, there are several

vocational centres where the art of sewing is

in surplus.

Nevertheless, a degree comes handy in order

to expand ones market space to both the

educated and the not too educated.

IF YOU HAVE CLOTHING NEEDS, SO ALSO OTHERS.

SHELTERWe all need where to lay our heads after

the day’s ACTIVITIES.

Professionals that want

to play in this field study

courses in Engineering

and the Environmental

Sciences.

As long as human exists, the need for shelter

remains. In fact, like food and clothing, this need

is also very CRITICAL TO HUMAN SURVIVAL.

These three remain the

foundational needs of

every human being; any

discipline that focuses on

meeting these challenges is

sure to maintain its

relevance in the

marketplace.

HEALTHThe Quality of Life of a Nation is reflected in their

estimated LIFE EXPECTANCY value (YEARS). Average Life Expectancy value of Nigerians is 52

– World Bank

Nigeria has 600 Pediatricians for 40million

children – Punch

11% of the children that die in the world yearly

are from Nigeria – Punch

Nigeria has one of the poorest health

infrastructure – WEF

In terms of Health and Wellness, Nigeria is

ranked 106 of 132 countries – SPI

Admission Rate for JAMBITES into Health

related disciplines is the lowest at less 5%

Health workers go on strike more than any

other professionals in Nigeria

Health tourism is another kind of tourism

Nigerians are known for now

NEED I SAY

MORE!

EDUCATIONNot many Students want to be Teachers, however a

Nation without Teachers is most likely to be

DIRECTIONLESS

30% of Pupils drop out of school

10.5million Nigerian children are out of

school

A total 375,479 Teachers need to be

employed to meet UPE requirement

Just about 30% success rate in WAEC &

NECO

Less than 50% score 200 and above in

JAMB

Schools are shut due to Teachers’/

Lecturers’ strikes

Poor funding of education at all levels

While there may seem to be 8 distinctive categories of

opportunities identified here, none is independent of the

other. For instance:

Health & Entertainment – Health services for sportsmen

Health & Education – Providing health education/training

Religion & Entertainment – Religious entertainers

Education & Communication –Online training and education

RELIGIONRecords have it that Nigeria is made up of 50% Muslims,

40% Christians, and the remaining 10% being

Traditionalists, Atheist and the likes.

Disciplines in Arts & Humanities easily provide a basic

foundation to provide service for the Religion sector.

However, anyone who has passion for helping people

‘know and stay in touch with their god’ can find their

relevance here irrespective of discipline.

It is also said that “Nigerians are highly religious people”.

This reflects that majority of the people have a ‘god-

concept’, it therefore posit that there should some form

of services that these can be provided to meet the needs

of these people.

COMMUNICATIONCommunication comes natural to human, irrespective of the age.

However, communication is not limited to voice or data

exchange; bodily, goods and services movement from one

location to the other is also categorized as a form of

communication.

The possibility of this depends on; Infrastructural development -

Technology and Road networks.

Disciplines in the Sciences, Technology and Engineering have

unexploited opportunities here and we currently do not have

enough people practicing in this domain.

S—T—E—M Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics

CLEARLY WRITTEN IN NIGERIA CONSTITUTION IS GOVERNMENT PLEDGE

TO SUPPORT SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, WHICH CURRENTLY MANIFESTS

IN PROGRAMMES SUCH AS PRESSID.

ENTERTAINMENTEntertainment is not limited to Music and Hospitality, Sports

is a form of entertainment. And after some tough day’s

activities, the body often need rest.

Disciplines in Arts & Humanities, and Education come

readily handy. Again, a passion for Music, a caring heart

and the ability to use physical strength effectively gives

everyone opportunity in this industry.

FINALLY,

STUDY A COURSE THAT WILL BREAK A CURSE!

A CURSE is:

ANOMALY, HINDRANCE, SOCIETAL ILL, CORRUPTION, INEPTITUDE, INJUSTICE,

MALADMINISTRATION, POVERTY, DISEASES, INFERIORITY, IGNORANCE, DISTRUST, LACK, ETC

ANY OF THE ABOVE MAKES LIFE LESS ENJOYABLE FOR ALL, THEREFORE A DISCIPLINE (COURSE) THAT CAN EQUIPS

STUDENTS TO PROVIDE SOLUTION TO ANY OR SOME OF THESE CURSES IS BOUND TO PROVIDE BUSINESS

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL.

Are you having issues with making sense of your data?
