GREATNESS AWAITS ONE WHO RECOLLECTS!

Th is is a milestone, a challenge for us to sustain and live the Sebastinian tradition, enjoying the tasty fruits of harvest amidst trials and diffi culties and testing our resiliency in values and competency.

We have achieved some of our aspired goals and for these, we were recognized. Th ese laurels now serve as our strong foundation because we should reap strength from these moments of triumphs in order to make future achievements more and more attainable.

But as we realize bigger dreams, we have to be likewise ready with bigger obstacles that can threaten our hard-earned values and competencies as a community of humble Christians and as an institution of love and learning. Let us be strong to continuously work for the good of all; honing our positive points and strengthening our weak areas. Remember that greatness is for everyone, shared, savored treasured and sustained. It is a strength that should forever be cherished. It should be redefi ned with a solid commitment and a zest of greater energy to embark on a passion for further excellence.

So, as we observe our 74th Foundation Anniversary, we celebrate our God-given creativity which is harnessed through retrospection, redefi nition and revitalization of the Sebastinian education.

Finally, let us be joyful celebrating greatness as one big, solid Sebastinian Family.

Bravo Baste!

In retrospect, Mother Teresa of Calcutta says, “We are all little pencils in the hand of God, writing his love letters to the world.” Therefore, to redefi ne and revitalize the Sebastinian Education, let us live lives of honesty, integrity, solidarity and concern for the common good. In our daily personal encounter with Jesus, let us promise Him that in our own simple way, we will combat injustice with conviction and without fear of chastisement from people who never care about justice. Alone, as a Sebastinian we can do so little but together as the Sebastinian Community we can do so much.

The mission of new Evangelization is not only to preach about the dogmas of the Church but also to live it and manifest the virtues of role models in our respective communities.

Creativity comes from trust, hence; we have to trust our instincts and to realize that to make ourselves happy, we have to love our work and fi nd in it our pleasure.

If our life is lived for others, it is really worth living. The best part of our life consists of our little acts of kindness and of love directed towards others especially to the poor, the sick and the needy. Let us also remember that there is majesty in simplicity and humility and let us make these two virtues moral imperatives.

There is still much work to do; our work has to go on and our dreams for our dear San Sebastian College-Recoletos, Manila shall never die.

Bravo Baste!

Greetings!

I would like to greet the San Sebastian College- ‐Recoletos (SSC‐R) community on the occassion of its 74th anniversary. Th e Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) is very glad to be sharing with you the honour of being founded on the same year (1941). Amidst the confusion and chaos of the Second World War (WWII) Catholic education was planting deep and stable foundations in our nation.

Th e tradition and history of SSC- R have been intertwined with the post- war development of the city of Manila and the communities around it. Th e school has shown steadfast commitment in providing service and quality education to its graduates as one of the leading Catholic institutions of the country. It is indeed a source of pride and honor for the Catholic educational community.

Th e Holy Father Pope Francis, in his encyclical last year entitled, Evangelii Gaudium, reminds us of the the role of Catholic schools in society and their undeniable contributions to humanity and throughout history. He also recognizes that those contributions are oft en not appreciated when they are counter- cultural, although he acknowledges that a school cannot be other than counter- cultural for the world is fi lled with challenges and these are mostly man- made.

Once again, the Catholic educational community shares with you the joy of this momentous event. We are looking forward to your more vigorous engagement in transforming our society. We believe that your experience in San Sebastian College- Recoletos are already serving to stimulate and enrich your respective communities.

Congratulations and May Our Lord and His Holy Mother bless you on your 74th year and beyond!

My warmest felicitations to San Sebastian College-Recoletos on its 74th Founding Anniversary with the theme “Roots of Creativity: Retrospection, Redefi nition, and Revitalization of Sebastinian Education.”

As the lead agency for the training of middle-level manpower, TESDA has always strived to meet the challenges and even go an exta mile to achieve a dynamic education and training landscape head-on, as well as to actively respond to the human resource demands for the industries.

To surpass the benchmarks that we and our clients have established, we in the education sector have to continuously evaluate our standards and strive for excellence, all the while reminding ourselves to stay true to our respective missions and visions. It is only with this attitute and perspective that we can continue to serve as best examples to those who choose to follow the path that we have set.

I wish you fruitful merriment on your celebrations. God bless!

Elegantly couched right in the heart of Manila (along CM Recto Avenue and a few meters from bustl ing Quiapo). In the 1940’s, the Order of Augustinian Recollects (OAR) envisioned the establishment of a Catholic School that performs a three-fold mission: the development of man, the promotion of local culture, and the welfare of society. SSC-R, Manila was established in 1941 but assumed hiatus from 1942 to 1945 when World War II broke out. It formally reopened after the war in 1946.

San Sebastian College was established and founded as an exclusive boys’ school with initial offerings in the Elementary and High School levels, as well as the Institute of Liberal Arts in College. Currently, the College caters to both male and female students in all levels.

Now on its 74th year, San Sebastian College- as fittingly exuded by the indomitable spires of its gothic Basilica-continues its dauntless commitment to serve, form and educate Filipinos, the “Recollect” way.

SSC-R, Manila embarked on a program of continuous, scheduled improvement of the school’s facilities to better serve the growing needs of the students. New constructions, installations, repairs and acquisitions were made to effect essential innovations. In 1998, the main quadrangle was repaved and coated with safety epoxy cement. It now features an alternate playing ground to the college gym featuring three basketball courts, a tennis court and a volleyball court. The monthly first Friday Mass is celebrated at the quadrangle for the community.

Today, SSC-R, Manila boasts and exhibits spacious and fully air-conditioned classrooms, five well-equipped libraries – one for each department, four computer laboratories in the college department, one in the elementary department, and three in the high school department. Instructional media centers can be found in the tertiary, high school and elementary departments. The College has a mass communication laboratory/studio, mini-hotel rooms and function laboratories. The Institute ofCommerce has a special business laboratory that is used by practicum students and interested students. Several concessionaires in the cafeteria area offer food, snacks and beverages. A group of dedicated licensed physicians, dentists and nurses trained in school emergencies and procedures man a fully equipped med-ical/dental clinic.

7

Page 8: 74th Foundation Week Souvenir Program

In the macroscopic Philippine educational setting, SSC-R, Manila has entrenched itself through its multi-faceted achievements that mirror the brand and quality of education it furnishes the Filipinos. The Elementary, High School and College Departments enjoy accreditation from the Philippine Accrediting Agency of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU). The Institute of Law gained approval from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to revise its curriculum designed to produce business and economic lawyers for the future. The Institute of Law is the fi rst and only Asian Law School to become an associate member of the Southwestern Legal Foundation based in Dallas, Texas, which sponsors the annual Dallas Academy of American and International Law. The legal aid to the poor and marginal members of society through SOLA is the Institute’s legacy to the people of Manila.

The students on their part have reaped glory, prestige and honor for the School through their remarkable success in off-campus competitions in various fi elds of endeavors. The students have excelled in inter-collegiate competitions in drama, literary-musicals, and sports, skill demonstrations in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. SSC-R, Manila has established NCAA records and became undisputed champions for years in the fi elds of basketball, volleyball, chess and track and fi eld in the junior and senior divisions. The DMST/ROTC cadets have annually garnered awards in drill competitions. Many Sebastinians have won major inter-collegiate awards in the fi elds of oratory, song, declamation, debate and science exhibits. Numerous plays and musicals have been produced in campus and off-campus by the Student Theater and singing groups. Participation and immersion in community development, social action and religious activities have been encouraged. Administration, Faculty and Students are active participants of the Institution’s program in its Campus Ministry Offi ce and the Outreach Program Offi ce. The SSC-R, Manila envisions a continuance of its mission, vision and objectives for the greater glory and honor to God. The College also vows to continue fulfi lling the three-fold mission of the founding OAR Fathers in providing QUALITY CATHOLIC COMMUNITY ORIENTED EDUCATION for the Filipinos beyond the year 2000.
