Before we proceed… Have you seen a mongoose? You have read in Lesson 9 that a mongoose can fight with and kill a snake. Look at the pictures and read the lines given along with them.
The fight of the cobra and the mongoose is a classic drama often seen in India, and the outcome is largely the same. The mongoose is not immune to the venomous bite, but is faster and quicker in motion than the snake. The cobra assumes a posture of defence and attempts to reach the animal by a sweeping strike, but the quick-moving mongoose jumps out of reach and comes at the snake from another direction, before the snake can get into striking position again. This constant movement tires and discourages the snake, and the mongoose is finally able to leap in close and bury its teeth in the snake’s neck, usually severing the joints of its vertebrae
You must have seen a banyan tree. This is a story about what the author saw, as a young boy, when he was sitting in an old banyan tree in his grandfather’s house.

There are many squirrels, snails and butterflies lived on the tree.
The boy was fond of reading books. In his banyan tree library he collected the books like : Treasure Island, Huckleberry Finn and The Story of Dr Dolittle . He made a friendship with a squirrel and started to give it pieces of cake and biscuits.
The tree was full of birds during the fig season. The birds were parrots, myna, nightingles and crow.
The present story we study about the fight of a cobra and a mongoose. Both are very strong opponents. The cobra raised its body three feet off the ground. There were three onlookers of the fight – the author, a myna and a wild crow. There was a story fight between cobra and mongoose. They both attacked at each other in order to kill. They both made three attempts to kill each other. In the third attempt crow was bitten by the snake and it fell dead.
Still myna was sitting on the cactus
plants and watching the fight.
After fighting for a long time, the
cobra became tired and weak.
The mongoose caught the cobra by its
mouth and put it into the bushes.
The myna flew down and looked into
the bushes. But it did not find and it
flew away.
