Mustn’t or Don’t Have to
Smeagol: Clever Hobbits, to climb so high! [jumps on them, pins Frodo to the ground and grips him by the throat]
Smeagol: Mustn't go that way! Mustn't hurt the Precious!
Frodo: You swore! You swore on the Precious!Smeagol: [mocking] Oo-hoo-hoo-hoo... Frodo: SMEAGOL PROMISED! Smeagol: Smeagol lied.
“You mustn't allow yourself to be chained to fate, to be ruled by your genes. Human
beings can choose the kind of life that they want to live. What's important is that you choose life... and then live.”
“You know you don't have to act with me, Steve. You don't have to say anything, and you don't have to do anything. Not a thing.”
Have to do - Responsibility
• We use ‘have to’ when we are expected to do something because of external obligations and responsibilities:
– I have to go to work– Children have to go to school–We have to collect the children from
school– I have to go…I’ll be late.
Must do - Obligation
We use ‘Must do’ for things we feel are necessary or important. They express the speaker’s opinion about what needs to be done or what is right.– I must go and visit my mum!– I must send him a birthday card!– The exam is coming soon… I must study more!– You must say sorry! You really hurt his feelings.
Don’t have to – Not required
• We use ‘don’t have to’ when there is no responsibility or expectation – when we have a choice:
– I don’t have to go to work tomorrow.– I don’t have to get up early tomorrow.
Mustn’t do - prohibition
• We use ‘mustn’t’ to say that something is not allowed or permitted:
– You mustn’t drive while drunk.– You mustn’t fight in school
Don’t have to OR Mustn’t
• Rules• Choice • Personal feeling • Strong Opinion• External Responsibility
