Using heat to stay warm and do work

•Radiator- a device with a large surface area designed to heat the air near it by conduction.

•Solar energy- energy from the sun. Free energy!!!

There are 2 types of solar heating.

1. Passive Solar Heating- Radiant energy is absorb during the day then converted to thermal energy (heat) to use at night.

2. Active Solar Heating- Radiant energy is absorbed and immediately used to heat water and air.

-Uses solar collectors.

•Heat engines- devices that convert thermal energy into mechanical energy.

•Internal combustion engine-

-Fuel burns inside the engine in cylinders.

Ex: Engine in cars and trucks

•External combustion engine- fuel is burned outside the engine.

Ex: Old-fashioned engines in steam locomotives.

•Heat movers- a device that removes thermal energy from one location and transfers it to another location at a different temperature.

Ex: Refrigerator
