TIPS FOR WRITING STYLE FOR ASSIGNMENT 3 (Pt 1: Report)

Aim for a concise, objective and critical style for most paragraphs (not using ‘I’)

In each section, explain how the person is guided by (referenced) approaches, codes or legislation and provide examples

Where appropriate, point out any aspects of professionalism, ethics etc which do NOT seem to be part of the person’s practice – and suggest possible reasons why (or ways they might be included)

Example (based on Management functions)

Management is a multi-dimensional activity, which has traditionally been divided into four functions (Saker, 2010). Planning involves identifying priorities and setting long and short-term goals, together with realistic timetables for achieving them. A sports team manager needs to plan for the long-term development of the club and its resources, as well as for a season and for individual matches. Organising means allocating players to specific tasks, ensuring that they understand their role, practise the necessary skills, and can communicate clearly with other players. Controlling means observing and interpreting information in fast-changing environments and taking decisive and timely action. Finally, leading covers any forms of communication or behaviour which managers use to influence employees; for instance, a team manager needs to know when and how to challenge and support the players. Although these functions are distinct, they are closely related; for instance, an unrealistic plan makes it difficult to organise or control its achievement and undermines respect for leaders. Therefore, effective managers always need to consider the bigger picture even when they are engaged in a specific function.

Paragraphs 2 – 5 (self-reflection of professional competency development):

One paragraph about each of the 4 competencies

Include examples / evidence of how you’ve developed in that competency and of any personal challenges or gaps you’ve identified

How do you intend to continue your development over the next year?

Personal style

Example (based on Management functions)

I have had little opportunity so far to develop my planning. This is because I have mainly been involved in observing the team manager who has a general plan for the season as well as quite detailed plans for each game. The main thing I have learnt is the need for flexibility – and back-up plans – since injuries or unexpected events mean that the original plan often needs to be abandoned. In the past, I have found it difficult to deal with uncertainty and have sometimes continued with my predetermined course of action when it would have been wiser to make fundamental changes. I noticed that the team manager has built some flexibility into her plans with alternatives for key players and a number of ‘what if’ scenarios. This is consistent with a contingency planning approach (Brown, 2013). Over the remainder of the season, I intend to make my own parallel game plans and compare these to the team managers, as well as considering changes during the game itself.
