Wells Branch Community Library 2009 Writing Contest

The Details
What: Write a novel chapter, short story, or poem based on the painting "House by the Railroad" by Edward Hopper.
Who: Teens and Adults in the Austin area.
When: Contest runs November 1-30, 2009. Submissions due Monday, November 30, 8:00pm, CST. Winners will be notified by December 7.
Where: Come to the Library to view a high-quality reprint of the painting. Visit the Picturing America website (http://picturingamerica.neh.gov/) to see it online.
Categories
Age Categories: Teen (under 18) Adult
Entry Categories: Novel chapter - A novel is a long narrative in
literary prose. Submit one chapter. Length requirement 250-1250 words.
Short story - A narrative, fictional story having a central theme. Length requirement 250-1250 words.
Poetry - A maximum of 250 words will be accepted.
Competition Guidelines
Complete the Library’s required entry form, and check the signature box. Parent/guardian also check if a minor (under 18).
No entry limit or fee.
Work must be original and previously unpublished.
Deadline November 30, 2009, 8:00 CST.
Upon submission, the entry becomes the Library’s property and won’t be returned.
Submission Guidelines
You must complete an entry form for every submission. There is no limit to the number of entries you may submit.
Only Microsoft Word documents or PDF accepted.
Hard copy or electronic submissions accepted.
To submit as hard copy: Return to the Library with the completed entry form attached.
To submit electronically: E-mail submission to
[email protected]. Type “WRITING CONTEST” in the heading. Attach the completed entry form to the email or copy and paste the information in the body.
Judging Criteria
Meets age and length requirements. Follows submission guidelines. Originality and creativity. Proper use of language. Relates to Hopper’s painting.
Inspiration for the Painting
Edward Hopper, (1882–1967). House by the Railroad. 1925. Oil on canvas, 24 x 29”.
“As the railroad tracks rattle by a once-grand Victorian home, so intersect the themes of modern progress and historical continuity. The painting’s bleakness suggests that Edward Hopper found little to celebrate in America’s post-World War I urbanization (http://picturingamerica.neh.gov).”
Artist Bio
Edward Hopper (1882-1967):
“Believing that American art should capture the character of the nation, Hopper rejected European influences and instead chose to depict the modern life around him. He is known for his unsentimental depictions of urban isolation, solitary buildings, and commonplace landscapes (http://picturingamerica.neh.gov).”

In addition, winners will be published in-house and on the library’s website.
