What is motion?
2
A motion is defined as the change in position or orientation of an object
with respect to its surrounding.
Types of motion?
3
Linear motion Free fall Curvilinear motion Projectile motion
Circular motion Rotational motion Oscillatory motion
Linear motion
4
The motion of an object along a straight path is called a linear motion.
A train moving on a straight rail track
Vehicles moving on a straight highway
Sprinters running on straight athletic tracks
A rocket launching from its launch pad
Free fall
5
The motion of an object along a vertical line under the action of gravity only is called a free fall.
Motion of sky divers Motion of a bungee jumper
Motion of a man jumping into river
Motion of a released stone
Curvilinear motion
6
The motion of an object along a curved path is called a curvilinear motion.
Motion of a car along a curved road
Motion of a cable car along a steel cable
Motion of a roller coaster along its track
Motion of fighter jets during national parade
Projectile motion
7
The motion of an object along a parabolic path under the action of gravity only is called a projectile motion.
Motion of a long jumper Motion of a basket ball Motion of a javelin
missileMotion of the stream of
a fountain water
Circular motion
8
The motion of an object along a circular path is called a circular motion.
Motion of planets around the sun
Motion of a moon around the earth
Motion of electrons around the nucleus
Motion of a whirling hammer
Rotational motion
9
The spinning motion of an object about its center of axis is called a rotational motion.
Motion of a spinning top
Motion of a giant wheel
Motion of a merry go round
Motion of the blades of a wind turbine
Oscillatory motion
10
The to and fro motion of an object about a fixed point is called an oscillatory motion.
Motion of the pendulum of a clock
Motion of a playground swings
Motion of the pistons of an engine
Motion of the strings of a guitar
Motion diagram
11
Motion diagram is the pictorial representation of a motion. In motion diagram the images are spaced at equal time
intervals.
A cyclist performing a linear motion A skate boarder performing a projectile motion
Particle model
12
Particle model is the simplification of a motion diagram. In particle model the object is replaced by a single point.

Frame of reference
13
It is a framework from where we observe & measure the physical quantities.
When we are standing on the ground, that is our frame of reference.
If we are sitting on the seat of a moving car, now the car is our frame of reference.
In physics, we often draw a set of coordinate axes to represent a frame of reference.
