In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
Moll Betts
Masthead/Title of the magazineI used the ‘Alias’ font from dafont.com. I used the capital 'M' for the logo also, which is similar to Kerrang! which has the 'K!‘. I have taken this idea and used the ‘M’ in the masthead as it is different from the rest of the title letters, and I used it as a logo. It follows a typical magazine convention of it being stretched to fit across the top of the page. On the left side third, the logo will be able to be seen also if it were to be placed in a magazine rack behind another one.
Coverlines
The fonts I used are RM Typewriter and Destruccion, which were downloaded from dafont.com and installed onto my laptop. I used RM Typewriter as I wanted to copy a bit of the
Colour Scheme
Red, black and white is used as these colours seem to be used in most magazines of the same genre. I used red as it is a powerful colour, representing anger, passion and love - some strong emotions, and they catch the eyes of passers by. Black and white brings in the older, ‘classier’ kind of look – it’s not overloaded with bright colours, as that wouldn’t be as appealing to older customers and can be confusing when it comes to genres as it can be misleading. I’ve used these throughout my magazine for consistency.
Mise en sceneThe background used for my main images were in my house upstairs on the landing, background edited out but kept the shadow from the light. I preferred the plain white background over a colour, because any other colour stands out on it, as well as making it look a bit more professional than having a gradient of mixed colours.

Genre and how the magazine cover, contents and spread suggests it - Rock/Metal
I think my model (Cassius Povey – ‘Cassius Krist’) for the front cover and double page spread goes quite well with my magazine, he doesn't look too young, despite being 18 but this allows teenagers to aspire to be like him as well as relate to him. His expression is angry to represent the anger most metal bands are associated with - the 'screamo' voices that are sometimes used. The fake blood is related to mosh pits you can usually find at metal gigs, which are pretty violent. It can also represent that he's strong and vicious, and having a direct address with the audience and an expression that says, 'Bring it on!'. This can attract the audience in the sense that it’s challenging. In most magazines in this genre, you would usually have three to five members of the band on the front with occasional individual interviews such as the one I have done. I chose an individual as it was a little bit easier, I could focus more on him and planning to take shots would be easier. My target audience is the age 15+ because of the light swearing and the technical terms used inside as it refers to instrumental tab and components of instruments. My model gets a lot of recognition for his hair, so I thought that might be attractive to some people because it's cool, a bit different and catches people's attention.
