REPRESENTATION. This is how you show your awareness of how music artists are portrayed in the media & how they are marketed.

AUDIENCE. This is crucial in the early stages as the way you create the magazine must clearly appeal to the audience. Therefore, you must know as much about them as possible and ‘get into their heads’.

IDEOLOGY. This is all about connecting with the way the artists and audience think, feel, believe and behave…whether they are backed up by powerful figures / organisations or go against them.

LANGUAGE. This is all about communicating with your audience appropriately, using the best techniques and methods.

INSTITUTIONS. These are the people who own and produce the media such as IPC Media (owns NME). You will need to find an appropriate institution for your magazine.

NARRATIVE. This can be about how a magazine follows, manipulates or just presents a news or feature story about a music artist. Artists such as Pete Docherty and Amy Winehouse are associated with the same sort of narrative.

GENRE. New music genres are created all the time. You will learn about smaller niche audiences and you may even be able to go about identifying and stimulating a trend so that it can become a complete music scene (something that music magazines do all the time).
