UPU Postal Payment Vision and Strategy

UPU-IFAD Project (2008/2010) - West Africa Region (I)

Creation of electronic remittance services in rural areas

• Target 6 countries:

– Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal.

• Equipment purchased, installed and tested in rural post offices.

• Connection of 355 post offices to the UPU's worldwide electronic postal payment network (WEPN).

UPU-IFAD Project (2008/2010) - West Africa Region (II)

Creation of electronic remittance services in rural areas

• Secure postal procedures implemented in rural areas for the payment of Money Orders

• Accounting and cash management procedures set up

• + 17 corridors opened

• Traffic in 2010 increased by 104% compared with 2009.

• Tariffs reduced by 30 to 50%

Inhabitants of rural areas in West Africa can nowreceive and send money to their familymembers, without the need to travel to remotelarge towns.

Projects development in partnership with Planet Finance 2013 -

Offer migrants a safe, reliable, affordable and accessible solution to transfer money using the «Mandat Express International» (IFS).

Leverage the postal network in rural areas to sensitize to and inform rural populations (both senders and recipients of remittances) on the importance of savings and basic financial mechanisms

Foster financial inclusion by developing and offering rural populations simple financial products.

• Trust-pay with COMPAS: the Posts offer escrow service to secure:

• the purchasing customer (payment is released if item is delivered)

• the selling company (parcel is released if payment is collected)
