Ethiopia Links Economic Development
to Green Industry
Four years ago, Ethiopia adopted its climate resilient green economy (CRGE) strategy for becoming a middle-income nation by 2025 while curbing its carbon footprint in the process.
Over the last few years, the nation has taken many steps toward achieving this goal, such as the Reppie project, a waste-to-energy power plant that will generate 50 megawatts of electricity by burning the city’s waste. Removing the waste dump significantly reduces both greenhouse gas emissions and pollution in nearby waterways.
Ethiopia is ramping up to a manufacturing boom. However, the nation remains aware of the problematic pollution that already exists throughout the country, especially in the capital, Addis Ababa. In order to create the energy needed to fuel industrial development, the CRGE strategy includes more than just waste-to-power technology.
The Ethiopian government also plans to harness wind, solar, geothermal, and hydropower energy to meet electricity demands without building reliance on fossil fuels. One of the nation’s projects that is very close to completion is the Gibe III hydropower station, which will generate 1,870 MW of energy.
