ABSTRACT2

1. The B30 municipalities specialise in industrial activities compared to their counterparts

in the Barcelona Metropolitan Region (BMR). Relative specialisation is increasing in

manufacturing electronic materials and manufacturing radio, television and

communications equipment and appliances, while it is falling in textile industries.

2. Knowledge-intensive companies in B30 municipalities are largely to be found in

Terrassa, the Sabadell-Barberà-Cerdanyola agglomeration and Sant Cugat. Knowledge-

intensive manufacturing activities are concentrated at both ends of the B-30 (Martorell

and Granollers). Hence the crucial role played by the B-30 toll-free motorway, although

the C-58 toll-free motorway is also a key factor.

3. In terms of innovation indicators, indicators of future potential include:

- The B30 municipalities accounted for almost half (48%) of R&D spending in the BMR

between 2005 and 2007.

- The B30 area accounted for around 25% of Spanish and European patents and utility

models in the BMR in the period 2004-2006.

- The presence of several universities (including the AUB and UPC) explains the B30’s

high proportion of BMR scientific articles (22%) published between 2004 and 2006.

at the OHMI * Note: Spanish patents are ones registered at the Spanish Patent Office (OEPM), European patents those registered at the European Office (EPO), international patents those registered as PCT by the OEPM and WIPO. The direct sum of the various types of patents and utility models may hide differences in the quality of the innovation so an indicator that approximates these differences is included. Spanish trademarks are those registered with the OEPM and international trademarks the ones registered with the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHMI). Source: IERMB
