“I’ve been using McMillan Equine Feeds for a little over a year. I have definitely seen an improvement in the horses top line with the feed the same consistent quality every week. All horses loved the feed and started eating it straight away. I use Rapid Gain for the yearlings and any horses which require a bit more condition, Sport Horse is used for the race horses and I also use Broodmare once the foals come home.”Jamie Gameson driving Here We Go again
A passion… for equine
McMillan Equine Feeds share your passion for horses. We recognise that correct and balanced nutrition is a critical component of proper horse care. Your horses need clean and high-quality feed at regular intervals to be at their best, and Equine Feeds has developed specialist nutrition during the past two decades to meet the needs of the horse.
Horses are individuals and therefore more variable than other animals, where genetic selection has resulted in great uniformity. For this reason the information contained within this booklet is a guideline rather than a prescription for what is best for your horse’s particular requirements.
Feeding levels will need to be modified according to age, liveweight, activity level, body condition and reproductive state. Horse diets should be based on a range of feedstuffs which are cost competitive and readily
available nearby. An ingredient which is commonly used in Australia, the USA or in the UK is not necessarily essential, or even desirable for New Zealand horses and care needs to be taken in your selection of equine feed.
Be assured that McMillan Equine Feeds are formulated in conjunction with specialist animal nutritionists to ensure the delivery of high quality feed for your horses, whatever their particular needs. This booklet outlines the McMillan Equine Feeds and the Equin Supplement ranges.
Thank you for choosing McMillan Equine Feed.
Better Equine nutrition
McMillan Equine Feeds have worked alongside veterinary professionals to develop nutritional products most appropriate for all horses from foals to yearlings, racehorses and sports and leisure horses.
There are a number of nutritional considerations or concerns, some which correctly balanced compounded feeds can address and some which only the owner can address under advice from the feed supplier. These include:
• Horses are grazing herbivores and are not well adapted to high levels of grain feeding and low intake of bulky forage which is typical feed for horses in work. Starch overload leads to acidosis due to insufficient enzyme supply. Undigested starch entering the large intestine produces undesirable lactic acid and toxins leading to founder, colic and scouring.
• Infrequent feeding of stabled horses promotes stomach ulcers due to a lack of acid buffering saliva, the production of which is stimulated by chewing. Providing grazing or hay at all times and at more frequent small concentrated feeds will help prevent ulcers.
• Unbalanced nutrient intake can lead to growth, reproductive and health disorders. Energy intake should match work output. Excess protein in adult
horses overloads the kidneys and an excess of phosphorus over calcium will lead to skeletal and metabolic disorders.
• Nutrient availability can be enhanced by grain processing, yeast cultures and enzymes and organically-bound trace minerals will be more effective than inorganic sources.
Where possible McMillan Equine Feeds attempts to address these concerns through correct formulation, feed processing and dietary additives. The horse owner must also play their part by following the feeding directions.
To effectively implement a balanced feeding programme, the horse owner needs to know the liveweight of the horse and the weight, not volume, of the feed being offered. Volume weight (grams per litre) of mixed feed and grains can vary widely. Check weigh the contents of full dippers and measures with each new batch of feed and grain.
We understand that one horse feed will not meet the nutritional requirements for horses at different stages of growth and development, or at different performance levels. By applying rigorous quality control standards to both ingredients and finished products, McMillans Equine Feeds has achieved a consistency and quality that is the envy of the industry.

Year One A complete diet for young horses aged up to 12 months
BroodmareSpecially formulated for pregnant and lactating mares, and as a first feed for foals
McMillan Rapid Gain is a feed that helps condition old, underweight or sick horses and is a growing feed for foals and weanlings. Its high protein level, formulated around milk powder and soya meal plus the addition of amino acids, helps develop muscle integrity and body condition. A highly digestible feed containing essential vitamins and minerals and live yeast.McMillan equine feeds contain a portion of the cereal composition as steam flaked cereals. This steam flaking process considerably enhances starch digestibility, allowing for a more complete digestion and conversion of starch to sugars in the small intestine. Excessive hind gut fermentation of cereal grains is therefore minimised, ensuring a safer and healthier digestive process with reduced incidence of colic, laminitis or reduction in performance.

McMillan cool Feed is a lower-energy maintenance feed, formulated specifically for ponies and horses in light work, or horses at rest. The combination of fibre ingredients and steam-flaked barley, helps maintain a lower energy status and therefore minimise the effects of fizziness. The inclusion of steam-flaked barley and live yeast helps maximise digestibility and ensure a healthy digestive system.
McMillan Equine Feeds contain a portion of the cereal composition as steam-flaked cereals. This cooking, steam-flaking process, considerably enhances starch digestibility, allowing for a more complete digestion and conversion of starch to sugars in the small intestine. McMillan Free-up is a complete high-energy racehorse feed formulated specifically for the horse prone to tying-up. A number of nutrients have been identified as being beneficial in helping minimise the effect of tying-up muscle disorders.
Free-Up contains an extensive range of these nutrients to ensure requirements are met in full. The combination of steam-flaked cereals with oil seeds and vegetable oils, ensures a diet of high-energy and one that helps to minimise lactic acid build-up in muscle tissue.
McMillan Equine Feeds contain a portion of the cereal composition as steam- flaked cereals. This steam-flaking process considerably enhances starch digestibility, allowing for a more complete digestion and conversion of starch to sugars in the small intestine. Excessive hind gut fermentation of cereal grains is therefore minimised, ensuring a safer and healthier digestive process with reduced incidence of colic, laminitis or reduction in performance.
Additional electrolytes may be required under heavy work regimes and/or hot and humid conditions.
