WP3 Applications Portfolio

GISELA - First year Project Review - Brussels - 15/09/2011 6

• 70 legacy grid applications inherited from EELA & EELA-2

• 34 of them are in a production stage

– Not all of them running on regular basis, but…– Can be provided at anytime upon users request in LA

• MoU signed with EGI-InSPIRE (M08) enables…

– VRC members in Europe exploit GISELA resources– VRC members in LA exploit EGI resources (most usual)– EGI/GISELA to coordinate VRC support in every EGI forum– Publishing GISELA applications in http://appdb.egi.eu/

WP3 Infrastructure usage statistics

GISELA - First year Project Review - Brussels - 15/09/2011 7

• Accumulated CPU-hours, grouped by VOs:

• Identified main consumers:–LHC experiments (HEP)–Training events–New comers with new applications

• Use of computing resources varies with time…–Some sites are not capable of supporting HEP VO(s)–Smaller applications generate burst-demand of resources

GISELA - First year Project Review - Brussels - 15/09/2011 8

• 3 major training events

– Jointly organized with EPIKH and CHAIN

– Venues:

Mexico City Valparaiso, Chile Sonora, Mexico

• 40 self-training documents available

– Tagged and categorized

– Multiple user profiles

• 8 articles related to WP3 activity

WP3 Open Issues

• Slow start of CLARA TT on WP3 matters

– CLARA TT WP3 person nominated in Q3

– CLARA TT is not yet fully engaged within WP3 activities

• CLARA & NRENs are prospecting communities…

– Difficulties to make them understand GISELA grid as a tool for e-Science

• Usage of e-Infrastructures not yet at the expected level– Complete saturation of infrastructure on regular basis is a tough goal

– Demand of resources coming in burst from smaller groups in LA

– Some LA sites cannot comply specific requirements (disk size, network bandwidth, MPI environment, 64-bit calculations, etc.)

WP3 Plans for 2nd Year

• At least two more major training events– Possibly in cooperation with EPIKH, CHAIN and/or DEGISCO projects

• Foster higher exploitation of e-Infrastructures– Leveraging WRF4G (Brazil, Cuba, but world-wide also)

– High demand of resources is expected from the “biomed” VO

– Enabling more RCs to support HEP VO(s), in cooperation with WP4

– Reaching new CLARA communities (social, cultural)

• Approach to industry-related communities– Providing a Scientific Gateway (web portal), in cooperation with WP6

– Stimulating usage of grid resources

• New WP3 VRC-driven website– Replacing contents currently available at http://applications.gisela-grid.eu

• Handover of user communities support activities to CLARA TT

WP3 Conclusions

• WP3 is in good shape accomplishing its 1st year quality metrics– Despite difficulties reported during the Crash Program

• Much help came, and is expected to come, from:– Signed MoUs with EGI.eu, EGI-InSPIRE and EPIKH

– Close cooperation with CHAIN project

• Plans are proposed for 2nd year seeking…– Success of WP3 activities– Contribution to long-term sustainability of e-Infrastructures in LA

• Involvement of CLARA TT is required to take the baton
