DONSIMPROVEGREATLYIN2009:AccordingtoSopisSports–asportsinformationcompanythatcoverscollegiatesports,theUSFwomen’ssoccerprogramwasoneofthemostimprovedDivisionIwomen’ssoccerprogramsin2009.USFfinished23rdintheranking,witha1.08improvementrating.SanFranciscoposteda5-13-2recordin2008,beforeimprovingto7-7-5in2009.

USFWELCOMESIMPRESSIVERECRUITINGCLASS:TheDonswelcome10newcomerstotheHilltopthisseason.TheclassbegintheirUSFcareersasoneofthemosthighlytoutedrecruitingclassesinprogramhistory.ThegroupincludestwointernationalstudentsandfivethathailfromthestateofCalifornia.

MARIS,ROBERTS,O’BRIENRETURNFORFINALHURRAH:SanFranciscowelcomesbackthreeseniorsin2010–LaurenMaris,AfyiaRobertsandAshleyO’Brien.Maris,amidfield-er,hasappearedinall57matchesofhercollegiatecareerandenterstheseasonastheDons’topreturningscorerfromayearago.Forhercareer,shehasamassedfivegoalsandthreeassistsfor13totalpoints.RobertstransferredtoUSFfromUCDavis in2008asasophomore.Sinceherarrival,shehasstarted39matchesandhelpedthedefenserecordeightshutouts.O’BrienjoinedtheDonsayearagofromUConn.Asajunior,shemadeanimmediate impact earning All-Region second team honors. She was also tabbed withWestCoastConferenceHonorableMentionhonors.

25thANNIVERSARYOFWOMEN’SSOCCER:The2010seasonmarksthe25thAnniver-saryofwomen’ssoccerontheHilltop.In1985,ErikVisserbecamethefirstheadcoachoftheprogram,recruitingessentiallyateamofwalk-ons.Sincetheprogramsfounding,Visserhasmovedontobecometheheadcoachofthemen’sprogramandthewomen’ssoccerprogramhasamasseda170-254-32all-timerecord.The1985teamispicturedbelow.

VETERANS LOOKTO HOLD ON, FILLVOID: The San Francisco offense will be missing a bigcomponentfrom2009,butstillhasitsselfplantedfortheupcomingseason.Missingfromtheline-upwillbelastyear’sleadingscorer,KristinaHall,butontheupside,amajorityoftheDons’offensiveeffortswillreturntothepitch.The15veteransontheUSFrosteraccountedfor14oftheDons’24goalslastseasonand42ofthetotal64points.

DONS FACE TOUGH CHALLENGE AHEAD: Ten home matches and seven NCAA postseasonteamshighlight theDons’2010slate.SanFranciscowill spilt theseasonevenlybetweenNe-goescoStadiumandtheroad,playing10asthehometeamand10asthevisitors.Despitetheevenschedule,USFwillnotspendanightawayfromhomeuntiltheyheadtotheStateofAri-zonathefirstweekendofOctober.Includedintheschedulearesevencontestsagainstteamsthatadvancedtothepostseasonlastyear,includingWestCoastConferenceChampionPortland.In2009,theperennialpowerhousePilotsadvancedtothequarterfinalsoftheNCAAChampion-ship.

FORMERDONNAMEDTOHAITIANNATIONALTEAM:FormerDonSamanthaBrand,whograd-uatedfromUSFinMay,hasbeennamedtotheHaitianNationalWomen’sSoccerTeam.Brand,whose grandparents were born in Haiti, played for the Dons from 2006 to 2009. Brand joinsFionaO’Sullivan(2004-07)asaformerSanFranciscostandoutcurrentlyplayingforaNationalTeam.O’SullivancurrentlyplaysforhernativeIreland.

CARRBEGINSFOURTHYEARONTHEHILLTOP:HeadcoachMarkCarrisenteringhisfourthyearatthehelmoftheDons.Lastseason,CarrledUSFtoaneight-matchunbeatenstreakenroutetoits7-7-5finalrecord.Underhisguidance,theDonshavelandedsixAll-WCChonorees,twoAll-Regionselections,threeWCCAll-AcademicnodsandoneUSFClassValedictorian.

DONSLANDTWO2009ALL-REGIONACCOLADES:FormerDonKristinaHalland2010seniorAshleyO’BrienwerenamedtotheNationalSoccerCoachesAssociationofAmerica(NSCAA)All-WestRegionSecondTeamlastseason.HallledtheDonswithfourgoals,oneassistforninetotalpointslastyear.O’Brien,whotransferredtoUSFfromConnecticut,addedagoalandtwoassistslastseasonfortheGreenandGold.TheduowasthefirstDonstobenamedtoanAll-RegionTeamsinceAnnikaSchmidtin2001.

TWONORWEGIANSARRIVEONTHEHILLTOP:ChristinaMobergandHannaHaanes,bothna-tivesofNorway,willbegintheircollegiatecareersatUSFFriday.HannescomestoSanFranciscowithaplethoraofinternationalexperienceunderherbelt.ThefreshmanhascompetedfortheU16,U17,U19,U20andU23NorwegianNationalTeams.ShewasnamedPlayeroftheMatchintwoEuropeanChampionshipcontests.MobergjoinstoUSFafterleadingFirstDivisionAskerFKtoa2007NorwegianCupChampionship.WhileplayingforAsker,Mobergtalliedanimpressive30goals.

NEGOESCOUNVEILSNEWLOOK:NegoescoStadiumissportinganewlookthisseason.Overthesummer,newFieldTurfwasinstalledattheDons’homefacility.Friday’scontestagainsttheSpartanswillmarkthefirstmatchplayedontheturf.
