Empowerment
Passport to Success
I would like to offer my most sincere and encouraging welcome to all freshmen, transfer and continuing Lehman College students.
The Urban Male Leadership Program (UMLP) at Lehman College is dedicated to the progressive development and ultimate success of all Lehman College students with an emphasis on Black and Latino males in higher education. When students participate in this energetic program, they succeed. Students strengthen their academic skills, and develop personally and professionally.
Students are able to strengthen their “Passport to Success” by participating in the UMLP Circle of Support men-toring, Academic Intervention and Success counseling and workshops, as well as leadership and personal develop-ment workshops, and the annual Leadership Retreat. Those who utilize these resources offered by the UMLP are Inducted into the program as UMLP Outreach Ambassadors at the Annual Induction and Awards Ceremony. To start participating in this exciting initiative, please stop by the UMLP office located in the Old Gym Building, Suite 302.
The UMLP is committed to “Bringing forth greatness…one student at a time.”

Hispanic Heritage Month I am a proud Lehman Alumna, working on campus allows me to give back to the college that gave me the skills to excel. Through my time on campus, I became passionate about the issues affecting disenfranchised communities and working to eliminate socio-economic disparities. In addition, I’ve worked and continue to work with the Office of Community Engagement & New Student Programs, on projects that enrich the students and the sur-rounding community. Additionally, I have experience with mentoring, administration, community outreach, and student programs. As the new liaison for the CREAR Futuros Program at Lehman College, I am committed to the success of Latinos and all students of color.
In 1988, the celebration was expanded beyond a week and recognized as National Hispanic Heritage Month. The celebration now covers the period of September 15th to October 15th and honors the rich contribution of Latino Americans. During National Hispanic Heritage Month, let us renew our commitment to ensuring that Lehman College remains an institu-tion where the talents and potential of all our students can be fully realized, especially with-in initiatives like the Urban Male Leadership Program and CREAR Futuros.

The Urban Male Leadership Program
I am honored to be the UMLP Circle of Support Mentorship Coordinator. My goal is to support UMLP in recruiting, retaining, and graduating one of the most at-risk groups in our country, the urban male student. As a graduate of CUNY Baruch, I am fully aware of the social, financial, emotional, and physical challenges our students will face on this journey to graduation. For these reasons, I am committed to our students and the mission of our program.
Mentoring has been one of the most impactful parts of my success, not only as a professional but as an NYC Urban Male. I look forward to sharing my story as often as needed to give hope and encouragement to our student body. Let’s have an outstanding year!
We do not mentor out of a place of perfection but with a desire to see our future leaders live with minimal interruptions. –Gary L. Smalls

The Urban Male Leadership Program
I believe the roles of educators and administrators are both critical and complex as we strive to provide optimal
learning conditions that will enable students to self-actualize and succeed. As such, my staff works collaboratively
with faculty and various administrators to remove potential barriers that may impede Lehman College students
from gaining the competencies needed in their future careers. The Office of the Vice President for the Division
of Student Affairs is dedicated to nurturing and promoting a student’s sense of individuality and at the same time
help students understand her/his inherent connection to others. It is my honor to serve as your Dean of Students.
