- Should be more clean...- Keep the place as it was rst
built!
- Respect the history of the
square.
- Could be nice with a barrier
to shield from the trafc.
- Vesterbo should be for all kindsof people.
- Include all ages!
- The paving stone is really nice,
and should be kept.

Two men, 22 years old, from Norway
- The plaza is too grey.
- To bring some color, we would like some ower beds
and and art installations, e.g. a sculpture.- A taller wall to block out some more noise would be
great
- Great that there is table service out on the square

- We are regulars
- Too much trac
Whats missing? What should be done for you to use the square
even more?
- Further screening of the square to create enclosure would be great.
- There is only a broken swing in a tree at the moment, so some ac-
tivity facilities for children would be nice...
- More comfortable benches and some public tables with chairs.
- An activity on the square, e.g. petanque, croquet or miniature golf.
- Reduce the trucks that drive on the square to unload their cargo.
- Reduce the inuence of the commerciel stuff on the square (cafes,
bars etc.) - create unity through free activities and community en-
hancing good.
- Make it usable in wintertime by creating a canopy or pavillion
a skating rink in winter would be lovely too....

- The square has a rough look (old materials, combination of different stones = good)- Remove the poles (no function)
- People know each other, you feel kind of home here...
- More prostitution coming, the areal going in the wrong direction close the square in
some way.
- Place some more owers (dont think they would be destroyed)
- Screen the cafs more.
- The seats round the tree should have a backrest.
- In winter make some small houses for all the dogs + the houses around the square
is used more in winter integrate them in the square.- More lightning

Old lady
- Want the old stores and cafs
back, much more nice atmos-
phere.- Has lived in one of the building
on the square in 28 years.
- Too many bikes at the square,
special too close to the cafs,
shops and corners close the
passage next to Obelix caf.
- Less trafc- Installing a skating ring in the
winter.
- Petanque play against the little
wall.

- The seats possibilities are not
good enough, benches not com-
fortable, should be more straight.
- Removing or replacing too
much at the square would ruinthe square.
- Maybe something some small
in the middle of the square with
different levels (moving activities)
- The colors of the building
should not be repainted in the
Disney colors as they have been.

-Cobblestones make it difcult to clean ground cover properly. Things get stuck
in between the stones and the sweeper is hard on them. Even the small stripe
of asphalt along the wall is difcult to sweep, as dirt and garbage sticks to the
rough asphalt. It should have been like the asphalt on the road, or even tiles(though this last thing seemed hard for him to imagine)
-Vesterbro Torv is primarily used in summer season. Not many activities, but
lot of garbage and dirt, especially after weekends. That of course is normal for
Copenhagen nightlife.
- People mostly just past through or sits on the benches, mainly foreigners and
alcoholics. Last mentioned seem to have their social life there.

- Living in a homeless shelter, where smoking and drinking is not aloud, makes
this area attractive to social gathering with other people in the same position.
There are benches to rest on, city life to entertain, and shops nearby.
- The commercial use of the area makes it difcult to change functions and use.
- Better comfort for sitting would be nice, a table here and there, maybe some
spots with bigger walls to block trafc view, a shelter when it rains
-Play possibilities for children, as a swing or something to climb on
-More green areas, maybe grass to play croquet, sand for petanque, a mini-golf
course.
- Music would be nice, as the church sometimes gives concert in the square
- Sometimes they even line up with free food to homeless people or other who
could use it
- In winter it could be fun with an ice-skating area like in Frederiksberg, some
shelter and maybe a heat source.

VESTERBRO TORVAnalysis and reections related to City squares in Scandinavia
Functions of the city squares
Observations and reection of Scandinavian Living related to- Squares in Scandinavia are often connected with activities and
meetings.
- Social gathering with friends and family more often takes place in
door and often in private settings, rather in public areas.
- Squares in Scandinavia are primarily used during summer time.
- Scandinavian citizens are fascinated by the atmosphere in the
South European squares and often adopt the constellational
settings in hope to create the same atmosphere.
Observations and reection of South Europe
-Higher cultivation of social gathering with family and friends in
Squares and other public areas.
- South European squares are used during most seasons.
Conclusion
- The difference in functions versus settings in The South and The
North seems primarily to be bound to climate and culture.
- Interactions between people are primarily based in cultural and
climatically conditions.
- Environmental settings are often bound to traditionally thinking.
- Tradition is a way to make society and culture recognizable andfamiliar.
- Tradition can cause monotony in the city. Especially squares often
seem much alike environmentally as well as functionally.
Rethinking Nordic culture and tradition => new functional settings/
new settings for more functions/exible settings for functional
diversity
Architects rethink settings and use new methods to break monotony. But they can only shape surroundings, not necessarily make people
accept it and use it the way it was originally imagined.
How to get common citizens to take part in the creative process
- How do you bring people to confront and deal with traditional
thinking and culture?
- How do you make people rethink and think beyond original/usual
settings?
- What is it the citizens really would like in relation to what they think
is possible?
- What methods/tools can be used to make people interact differently
with well-known functions as well as environment?
- How is it possible to get in dialog with daily users and other citizens
to make them share their experiences, thoughts and ideas?
- How is it possible to help them generate new ideas?
