Pearls- Colour: Pearls which are a strong white, or have a slight pink hue to them are more desirable than those which are yellowish or creamy. Pearls can be dyed to most colours, although natural colours are more valuable than the dyed equivalents. A good natural colour can be as valuable as a white Pearl.- Shape: Baroque Pearls (irregular shaped) are lowest in value, with round & perfectly symmetrical being the most desirable. - Lustre: The lustre is the brilliance of the pearls, the greater the lustre the more valuable the pearl. - Surface Quality: Bumps, blister and flaws will lower the value of a pearl, the surface quality will be affected by the thickness of the nacre. - Nacre: Nacre is the outer coating of the pearl, formed around the irritant within the Oyster/Mussel. The thicker the coating of nacre, the better and more durable the pearl.

BUSINESS TIPS

Top tips for success!

Effective Thinking – part 2Set goals. To achieve success goals are essential for setting priorities, separate what you need to do into important/urgent (must do), important/not urgent (should do), not important/urgent (distraction) and not important/not urgent (waste of time).

Lay out tasks and work on a time line. Successful people begin with a good plan for time, what must be done? What are the goals? What’s critical and important and what’s not? What’s the time line? Many people

are seen as lacking time management skills because they don’t write down the important sequence and leave something out.

Manage your time constructively and effectively. Plan your time be time sensitive and value time. Figure out what you are worth per hour and attach a monetary value on your time. Work out your three largest time wasters and reduce them by grouping activities and using efficient communications like e-mail and voice mail for routine matters. Make a list of points to be covered in phone calls; set deadlines for yourself; use your best time of day for the toughest tasks.

Chris Slocock

Business News in BriefHave you felt the recovery yet?

The services sector, which accounts for almost three quarters of the British economy, grew by more than expected as a leading purchasing managers’ index rose to smash analysts’ expectations.

New car registrations leapt 11% last month to about 6,000 a day.

Average property values rose 2.6% to £166,898 in the year to May, according to Halifax.

Not all easy going!

Tesco admitted that domestic sales had begun to fall again, mainly in electrical goods but also in the wake of the horsemeat scandal.

The Competition Commission ruled that Eurotunnel’s launch of the MyFerryLink service across the Channel was anti-competitive.

Debt at Network Rail has rocketed to £30.4bn, an increase of £3bn.

“News in Brief”Food IgnoranceA survey of 27,500 British children has laid bare their ignorance about where their food comes from. 29% of primary school pupils think cheese derives from plants; one in five believe the main ingredient in fish fingers is chicken; while 10% of secondary school pupils think tomatoes grow underground. Daily Telegraph

Passive Smoking Is ExpensiveResearch suggests the effects of passive smoking on children costs the NHS £23m a year by causing 300,000 GP visits and 9,500 hospital

admissions. Most of those patients were suffering from breathing-related problems although smoke was also blamed for diseases of the ear and other illnesses. BBC

Friday Not A Good DayA landmark study of more than four million NHS patients has found that those who had surgery on a Friday were 44% more likely to die following the procedure than those who had the same operation on a Monday – with the risks increasing steadily as the week went on.

Home Improvement Top Tips – that pay you backIf you’re planning to sell your house any time soon, home improvements that build property value should be on your to-do list. It’s a buyer’s market, and between tighter purse strings and plenty of properties to choose from, shoppers want homes that are move-in ready and free of the need for home improvement projects that will add to their own bottom lines.

Planning home improvements that pay you back at the time of sale requires a strategic vision as well as design, finish and product selections that welcome the widest possible range of buyer tastes. Top Ideas:

Front Doors: Curb appeal is the first step in a successful home sale, and installing a beautiful, high-quality entry door is a simple home improvement that delivers impact both in buyer drive-bys and online listings.

Decks: Building a deck is one of the least-expensive ways to extend your living space. Composite decking is a great low-maintenance option, and even building a deck from pressure-treated wood can bring a return on investment of up to 80 percent at the time of sale.

Kitchen: The kitchen is a major selling point for a home, and its appearance and layout can often be a deal-breaker. Improving your kitchen doesn’t have to be a huge investment, however: just replacing countertops, key appliances or cabinet hardware can transform a kitchen’s look and impact.

Ten out of twelve Portas Pilot towns continue to declineSome ten out of the twelve ‘Portas Pilot’ towns - named after the taskforce overseen by government retail guru Mary ‘Queen of Shops’ Portas – have seen a greater number of shops close than open within the last year, despite each receiving a £100,000 cash grant.

Most of the towns which received DCLG funding to boost their high-street fortunes have seen a decline in the number of occupied shop units, research commissioned for BBC Radio 4’s ‘You and Yours’ programme has uncovered.

The 12 pilot areas include: Bedford, Croydon, Dartford, Greater Bedminster, Liskeard, Margate, Market Rasen, Nelson, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Stockport, Stockton-on-Tees and Wolverhampton.

About 700 units closed, while fewer than 600 new stores opened in their place and among the pilots

only Bedminster, near Bristol and Margate were able to increase the number of high-street firms.

Matthew Hopkinson, director of the Local Data Company, which undertook the research for the radio documentary, said: ‘If more shops close than open, then that’s when you start to see the decay of the high street and also a rise in vacancy rates.’

Mary Portas told the programme real change would take time, and there were no simple solutions to the crisis on the high streets.

‘There are no quick fixes but 400 towns up and down the country are working in different plans to try and reinvigorate their high street,’ she said.

Ferndown Rotary’s charity golf day raised nearly £5000 for the Dorset Blind Association and the Rainbow Trust, the latter providing support for families coping with terminally ill children. Both organisations will be using the donations to support their activities in and around East Dorset.

More than 110 local golfers supported the event staged in glorious weather at Canford Magna Golf Club.

Speaking at the event, Ann Banks, President of Ferndown Rotary Club, said: ‘By the time we have accounted for all the monies collected during the

day, we fully expect to be able to round up donations to at least £2500 for each charity.’

Eleanor Mc Donald (left) from the Rainbow Trust and Jaya Da Costa (right) from the Dorset Blind Association collect cheques from Ann Banks, President of Ferndown Rotary and Norman Hendy from the event’s main sponsors, the Hendy Group.

Continuing the landscape theme, in this issue I shall discuss the effect of direction of light and time of day.

Light DirectionRelative to the camera, the sun can be behind the photographer, to the side or in front. Some subjects can be photographed by moving round the subject, others require the sun to move to where the photographer wants the light affecting the time of day.

Front lighting is when the sun is behind the photographer. This results in flat light, useful for detail but the lack of shadows results in a 2 dimensional image lacking depth or texture. This is illustrated here with the colourful flowers on the bridge.

Sidelight gives shadows even on apparently flat surfaces, emphasizing texture and giving a sense of three dimensions. There are two examples here: 1) the detailed texture on the close up of rocks and 2) the photo of 2 people sitting viewing St Peter Port Harbour.

Backlight is when the camera is facing the direction of the sun. If the sun is low in the sky the result can be flair patterns across the image, or possibly with the sun included.

In this case a useful guide is to wait until you can look at the sun without squinting because of light cloud or the sun setting. General rule: If you can look at the sun safely, so can the camera. When the sun is high in the sky there is no problem with flair. Shadows will point towards the photographer, silhouettes are possible and any translucent material will be enhanced. Examples being plants with hairy stems or new leaves on trees and brides veils. Here I have included a silhouetted mountain scene with the sun shining through the clouds.

Time of DayAny subject photographed at different times of the day from the same viewpoint will take on a different quality. Why not try this as a learning exercise? The image of Cranborne Chase with the ‘big sky’ shows how dawn and sunset influence the colours in the image, here a sunset with the light behind the camera giving flat light.

In summary – Choose a subject that you can walk round. On a sunny day, photograph this from different directions and study the results. This will help in understanding the influence of the direction of light.

A day out for 3000 – on the Lions.Every year for the last 21 years, usually in May, Lions clubs from around the south of England have collaborated to arrange a day out for variously disadvantaged children and young adults in their area.

Groups from many East Dorset local establishments, such as Hopscotch Day nursery, Gateway Club, Advance Support, Verwood Day Centre, Chaos and Boveridge House School spent a day enjoying all the attractions at Paultons Park including, for some, Peppa Pig.

The Lions pay the entry fee (specially negotiated with Paultons Park) and provide escorted coach transport. In some instances guests will use their own specialised transport to travel there.

This year the number of people who went was about 3200 (not all on the same day) of whom 110 were sponsored by Wimborne and Ferndown Lions Club.

The Club can be contacted on www.lions.org.uk/wimborne-ferndown

Dorset Wildlife Trust is very excited to take part in the Wildlife Trust’s annual celebration of our fantastic coast, with National Marine Week 2013. Events are taking place all over the country, and this is a chance for anyone, of any age to get involved with what lies above, beneath and in Dorset’s iconic seas. National Marine Week begins on the 27th July and there are lots of opportunities for you to experience the UK’s sea animals and plants for yourself. Many of us forget that beneath the waves there is a rich marine world, bursting with colour and life. Fish, lobsters, limpets and anemones all thrive in our local waters – and, in the summer months, dolphins hunt close to our shores.Did you know that dolphins only rest half of their brain at a time whilst the other half stays alert and watches out for predators? For the chance to capture a glimpse of these majestic creatures, come and join us at Durlston Castle in Swanage on Sunday 28th July at 10.30am, as DWT takes part in the National Whale and Dolphin watch for just £3pp. We have teamed up with Durlston Country Park to learn, record and report information about dolphins. – Bring binoculars if you have them!If you’ve ever wanted to see what’s beneath the surface whilst staying dry, our clear-bottomed Kayak Safari at Kimmeridge is for you. We also have goggle-viewers to

help you explore the seafloor and literally give you an insight into the habitats under the sea. Let our experts guide you on a safari of the sea! Each 2 hour session includes a guided safari for £25pp per session on various dates throughout July and August. Booking is essential. For those who prefer to keep their feet on land, the Fine Foundation Centre at Chesil Beach has numerous species to uncover, including anemones, sea squirts and crabs. Our seashore detectives events on Tuesday 6th August (12.30-2pm) and Thursday 8th August (1.30-3pm) gives kids (and big kids!) the chance to search for signs of creatures from the deep along the seashore and use our amazing underwater camera to see sea creatures living in their natural habitat. If you’re crab-mad, and fancy a day with us at Kimmeridge, there will be an opportunity for families to attend the ‘Crafty Crabs’ event at 12.30 on Wednesday 7th August, where children can create crazy crustaceans. If you then want to learn about how to catch and care for crabs without harm to other rockpool animals, we will show you how – the eco-friendly way! Our ‘Eco-friendly

Crabbing’ event starts in the afternoon, at 3pm.For more booking information and event details at the Fine Foundation Marine Centre at Kimmeridge, or to book, please phone 01929 481044. Some of the items date back to the 15th Century. I possibly have the best selection of antique metalware on the South Coast, possibly in England.

Horse Bits Dorset LtdI’m getting a lot of customers saying their horses are very excitable at the moment. I know my youngster is, she has just turned five and I thought was over the worst of her baby behaviour, but in the last month she has reverted back to the silly behaviour she had last year. The only thing I can put it down to is the flush of grass around at the moment. The seasons have changed and we are yet again having weather you would expect in the spring (lots of lush grass) turning the horses into spooky time bombs; so she is back on the Calmer (I use N.A.F Magic). Hopefully it will kick in soon and she will get her brain back and stop being silly when ridden. For those of you who don’t have horses lush spring grass can have the same effect as too much sugar has on children...

So any approach is a package and you should consider providing an author biography; a blurb that suggests why the book will sell; a synopsis and details of the main characters you have. Putting this material together should enable you to be able to answer the question ‘why would someone want to buy this book?’ If you find it difficult to come up with an answer try the book out on friends and see what they think. One advantage of working out an overall package is that it gives any agent or publisher a sense of who you are and helps to engage their attention. It shows that you have thought through what you are trying to do and what the audience might be for the work you have produced. It is also important to remember that this is a two way street. The better the understanding of what you are trying to do and your understanding of what any agent/publisher can offer, the greater the chance of a productive relationship and ultimate success.Remember you may have been years writing the novel. You don’t want to ruin its chances by not taking the time to present yourself properly and decide if the relationship on offer is the right one.Next month’s issue will look at self-publishing (in the age of the e-book) and promotion.

So your revised and now perfect novel is sitting in front of you. What do you do next? The traditional course is to get a literary agent or a publisher. If this is the route you want to follow you need to do some research. If you have written a science fiction fantasy you need an agent or a publisher who is interested in that field. Simple stuff but it’s easy to ignore the obvious. There are a number of sources that will help you determine whether there is likely to be a match of interests such as the Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook. Most publishers/agents will also have websites that tell you what sort of novels they are interested in and any preferences they have on how work should be submitted. One advantage of having an agent is that if they are interested in you as a writer they will help you (in more or less degree) to develop your work and suggest what may be a viable proposition and what is not.Remember also that it is not just your novel that you are selling. Even if it is the greatest work ever in its field it still needs promotion. An agent, and a publisher, will also be interested in you, and what your plans for your writing career are. They will be looking for anything that makes your book more interesting and saleable.

It has been a busy month here at Minster with a variety of new and exciting projects.

First of all, we are delighted to announce that we are now the proud printers of Scream Magazine (see below)! This 52 page A4 Full Magazine will be printed on a regular basis and delivered straight to the Scream Team.

This is what they had to say about us:

“Mike just delivered the mags. What a nice chap and great service. I’m really pleased with print job. So I’m happy to continue to let you guys do the work each issue.”

As usual we having been printing a number of Annual Town Guides for Wimborne, New Milton, Christchurch and Ringwood in the last couple of months.

Our team have managed these projects from start to finish. From selling advertising space to Designing, Printing and then distributing them door to door to both residents and businesses. We love these projects just as we love to support our local businesses.

On top of that, the Minster Team have also been printing all of your Business Cards, Leaflets and invitations for your summer events.

The July Issue of The Wimborne “Little Guide” has hit the streets!

We have had a number of new advertisers in this issue including Auto Paint Repair and Elliotts but to name a few.

We are looking for upcoming events in August. So if you have an event email us on the address below.

Our Design Team has been going full throttle this with lots of advert designs for the Wimborne Folk Festival 2013 Programme (see examples below).

Dear Jason,

I need to move but is it better to wait until prices rise before I downsize? Mrs B Hamburg

Hello Mrs Hamburg,

It’s generally considered better to downsize when prices are increasing, put simply the price differential works in your favour when trading down. However, I shouldn’t let this worry you. I don’t know your exact circumstances, but the best time to move home is when it suits you. Why ‘rattle around’ in a place that’s too big for your needs just in the hope of achieving a higher sale price in a few years time?

Plenty of people are trading down at the moment; in fact recent figures suggest that demand from downsizers is actually fuelling something of a jump in asking prices! According to Rightmove the average asking price is almost level with the post-financial crisis record set in February 2008. Apparently, it is “property old hands” who are fuelling that increase. They say 71% of people intending to sell this year are over 45. Indeed, the most active are those in the 55 to 64 age bracket, who make up 30% of the total.

Aside from simply wanting a smaller place that’s easier to maintain, people are downsizing in order to help fund their retirement. After all we’re all living longer, and the pressure on pensions makes it the obvious alternative to any of the equity release schemes being touted around at the moment.

Also many downsizers are cash buyers and even where that is not the case, many have large amounts of equity and benefit from the extremely low mortgage rates currently being offered. This puts them a very strong negotiating position on their forward purchase. So, my advice is: go for it!

Good luck

Jason
