Another successful Angel Tree Another successful Angel Tree Another successful Angel Tree Another successful Angel Tree ---- Thanks to you! Thanks to you! Thanks to you! Thanks to you! 10 Charities….over 750 gifts valued at over $30K, hundreds of gift cards and thousands of cash & checks donations made this year one of our most successful years. Our committee cannot thank you - the members of St. John Capistran and St. Thomas More - enough for our incredible generosity. It’s hard to put into words the joy and happiness each charity expressed when they picked up their gifts - but overwhelmed by our support might be the best way to describe it. So thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Know that you and your family made someone’s Christmas just that much brighter by your thoughtfulness.

And finally a great big thank you needs to go to the entire committee who worked tirelessly over the last 2 1/2 months

preparing the angels, setting up trees, contacting the charities, collecting and organizing gifts, shopping and distributing the gifts. This program wouldn’t work without each of you so thanks to Grace Monk, Marita Howell, Martha Martin, The SJC Ladies of Charity, Kristine & Allie Fishell.

Have a Blessed New Year! - Mary Kirk

“Among man’s personal rights we must include his right to enter a country in which he hopes to be able to provide more fittingly for himself and his dependents. It is therefore the duty of State officials to accept such immigrants.” (St. John XXIII; Encyclical; Peace on Earth; 1963; #106)

REFLECTION Pastor’s Letter

FROM THE PASTOR

St. John Capistran 412-221-6275 St. Thomas More 412-833-0031 School 412-833-1412 stm-sjc.org 4

As we celebrate this Feast of the Holy Family, I extend my thanks to this wonderful parish family for the many wonderful cards and generous gifts received in this holy season. I am so very grateful for your generous support and constant kindness. You are a truly holy family.

That is how family is defined for us. No matter what shape or size, a Christian family is called and chosen to be a holy family and a domestic Church. We are defined by our faith in God and our hope for each other as we become a living sign of God’s presence on our world. Like Jesus, Mary and Joseph, we journey through joy and sorrow, strength and weakness, successes and disappointments always standing firm on the rock of our faith, Jesus Christ. His is the life and gospel we proclaim.

On this feast, we pray that all of our families remain strong in faith, hope and love. We ask God’s protection in our lives so that we may be free of harm. We ask God’s help that we may continue to walk in his light and his love each day. He is our God and we are his people. Thank you for being such a devoted and dedicated family. Because of you, I am certain our parish will have a great future.

In these next six months, we will take on the final phases of the process of joining two vibrant Churches into one great parish and family of faith. I am confident we will complete this good work that God has entrusted to our care. We will continue to be one parish with two churches and a union of holy families dedicated to building not only our new parish, but also to building the Kingdom of God. We will put on, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness,

and patience. We will do everything we need to in the name of Christ Jesus.

To all of you, my Holy Family, I wish you a very Happy, blessed and healthy New Year.

The Respect Life Committee will be showing a screening of the movie UNPLANNED based on the book by Abby Johnson. Friday, January 3rd at 7:00 pm in the STM Life Center. All Abby Johnson ever wanted to do was help women. As one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, she believed in a woman’s right to choose. Until the day she saw something that changed everything. This movie received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) for brief periods of intense violence when an abortion is portrayed in the movie. Parental discretion is advised. We will view the movie and have a short discussion afterwards. If you have any questions please call Carolyn Sopher-Martin at 412-860-9980.

Everything in Mary was directed to the Blessed Sacrament as Its center and end. A current of grace and love established itself between the Heart of Jesus-Hostia and the heart of Mary-Adoratrix. “These hearts were like two flames blended into one. God was then perfectly adored by His creature,"
