West Metropolitan Health Service (Sistemade Salud Metropolitano Occidente – SSMOc),part of Chile’s National Health Service, operates20 facilities responsible for the health and well-being of 1.2 million people in the western areaof Santiago. As part of Chile’s effort to reform apublic healthcare system that was becomingincreasingly inefficient and costly, the govern-ment passed laws (Acceso Universal conGarantias Explicitas – AUGE) guaranteeinghealthcare service levels for all citizens, financialprotection for people with certain acute orchronic conditions, and a focus on prevention. To comply with the new laws, SSMOc begana search for software to automate healthcareprocesses and drive improvements across theentire continuum of care. SSMOc choseInterSystems TrakCare™ because of the system’smany successful deployments, InterSystems’deep experience in healthcare, and becauseTrakCare clinical and administrative modulescould be easily configured to fit the Chileanhealthcare system and the individual workstyles of its healthcare professionals.SSMOc is deploying TrakCare in its sevenhospitals, plus primary care health centers, a

centralized Health Referral System, and in sevendiagnostic laboratories. When the rollout is com-plete, TrakCare will handle the data generatedfrom more than 3 million patient encounters ayear, and store it all in its high-performanceCaché database. Record duplication and redun-dant laboratory and pharmacyrequests will be drasticallyreduced. Clinicians will haveaccess to every patient’sElectronic Patient Record anda complete picture of patienthealth and medical history, including lab results, no matterwhich facility a patient visits. In addition,TrakCare is giving SSMOc the administrativecapabilities needed to improve scheduling andreduce wait time for services, and to managebed utilization, laboratories, pharmacies, andpharmaceutical stock.“With access to comprehensive, up-to-datepatient information, InterSystems’ technologygives us the power to deliver the care our clientsexpect, and this makes TrakCare useful to SSMOcand throughout Chile,” says Dr. Enrique Ayarza,Director, SSMOc.
