HASTINGS may soon be a ‘con-struction hub’ with news that anAldi supermarket and perhapsspecialty shops and a ring road areon the way.
Several shop owners, who didnot want to be named, told theWeekly they understood the shopdevelopment was proposed forland bounded by Victoria, Queenand Alfred streets with the rear ofproperties fronting High Street.
The proposal has two stages,the first comprising two large spe-cialty shops, five smaller retailtenancies and associated parking.The second stage will have foursmall retail tenancies, parking andassociated landscaping on thecorner of Queen and Elizabethstreets.
An Aldi Australia spokes-woman confirmed Hastings as thelocation for one of its new stores.
‘‘The new Aldi Hastings willprovide highly rewarding career
opportunities to the local com-munity, with positions still onoffer for enthusiastic, motivatedcandidates who would like to jointhe Aldi team,’’ the spokeswomansaid. She declined to comment onwhen work would get under way.
Hastings real estate agent DavidNelli, of Harcourts, said he hadheard whispers of a new develop-ment. ‘‘I think it would be verywell accepted in Hastings, being alower socio-economic area. Iknow that the Aldi in Frankston isvery popular for cheap groceries.Woolworths and Coles would be abit worried, but I think its great itcoming into town for more com-petition,’’ Mr Nelli said.
Sid Ferguson, of SatchwellsHastings real estate, was alsoaware of rumours about Aldi andan arcade being built in Hastings.Satchwells Hastings backs ontothe proposed development.
‘‘In recent times we have beenapproached by the shire in regardsto closing off Alfred Street and I
am pretty sure it’s going ahead. Ihave heard on the grapevine thatThompson Properties have sold iton to someone else,’’ Mr Fergusonsaid.
A proposed ring road for Hast-ings is also in the pipeline as partof the directions and optionsreport for the development of thedraft Hastings activity centrestructure plan.
As part of the traffic manage-ment plan, the report states the‘‘ring road using Church, Queen,Elizabeth and Salmon streets toprovide convenient access to thelarge supermarket car parksshould be put in place to comple-ment the aim of downgradingHigh Street’s traffic role’’.
In other development news,Lifestyle Communities is prepar-ing the groundwork for 142homes at its latest over-50s estateat 240 High Street.
The first such development inthe area, it could ease some of thepressure on families hit hard by
recent job losses in the Hastingsarea.
Twenty-five buyers havealready signed up for a one ortwo-bedroom home in the com-plex, which will also include aclubhouse, bowling green, gym-nasium, private cinema, heatedindoor pool and spa, library, bill-iards room and bar. Prices for newhomes at Lifestyle Hastings rangefrom $236,700 to $330,250.
Project manager Gary Jamiesonsaid he intended to approach localtradesmen to be involved in theproject. ‘‘I prefer to source tradesincluding plumbers, electriciansand landscape gardeners locally tobuild community interest in thedevelopment,’’ he said. Bus passengers ignoredThe new Peninsula Link may make life easier formotorists but bus service 788 (Frankston/Portsea)remains inadequate and slow for long-sufferingpassengers. I have been a regular passenger since1996. There is a 45-minute frequency during theweek and an appalling 75-minute frequency at theweekends. Rye to Frankston takes a boring andslow 75 to 80 minutes.
Increasing numbers of people are using bus 788and there are many recent incidents of severe over-crowding and many have been standing for longdistances. Bus 788 should run 20/30 minutes withsome express services.
It’s about time governments gave financial prior-ity to upgrading efficient public transport insteadof pandering to freeway financiers and motorists.

Eyesore takes shapeAs a regular and appreciative user of Mt Martha’sRotary off-leash dog park, I was shocked to see thestructure being built inside the main entrance. Atthis stage it is difficult to envisage its purpose,perhaps a weather-cum-flora and fauna informa-tion shelter, a barbecue facility, a wedding photo
venue or merely a folly. I presume all intendedprojects are decided by majority vote, but I can’tbelieve that such a structure, so totally insensitive
to its beautiful surrounds, could ever gain approvalby Rotary members or council. If there is a legitim-ate need (which I doubt) for a structure in that posi-tion, surely it should be of a rustic appearance toblend sympathetically with its bush environment.
In my opinion, and many dog walkers agree, thisstructure is neither wanted or needed and will be afurther blight on the local landscape.

Please explainEnough of the political misdirection. There is a$4.8 million cut to Peninsula Health. At RosebudHospital, the mother-and-baby unit is closing. AtFrankston Hospital, 10 short-stay beds are closeduntil after Easter.
In late November, the state government cut homeand community care funding to councils retrospect-ive for this financial year. The government expectscouncils to make up this shortfall. My question toNepean MP Martin Dixon is: why is the stategovernment cutting back funding for the mostvulnerable people in our community while dolingout millions of dollars to the Victorian racingindustry and the grand prix?

WHILE many Australians are receiv-ing a pretty penny for their hard work,others are not faring as well, a recentreport has revealed.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics’Employee Earnings and Hours, Aus-tralia publication showed one in 10full-time employees was raking in$2364 or more a week — a far cryfrom the national minimum wage of$606.
The highest average weekly totalcash earnings reported for all employ-ees were for managers ($1926) andprofessionals ($1438).
At the other end of the scale,however, the statistical snapshotfound one in 10 full-time employeesearned $738 or less a week. The lowestaverage weekly total cash earningswere reported for sales workers($607), community and personal ser-vice workers ($707), and labourers($779).
Across industries, average weeklytotal cash earnings for all employees
ranged from $539 in the accommoda-tion and food services industry to$2388 in the mining industry — where63 per cent of full-time non-managerial employees earned weeklytotal cash earnings of more than$2000.
Women are still tending to earn less
on average than men. Average weeklytotal cash earnings for full-time maleworkers were $1472 a week comparedwith $1226 for females.
Social analyst David Chalke ofTyabb said Australians were doingwell compared with other nations dueto factors including lower interest
rates.‘‘The people who are strugglingare retirees, and those people whohave to spend a high proportion oftheir weekly income on utilities,including those on government bene-fits.’’
While the cost of luxury items suchas electronics had dropped, basics
such as milk and bread had gone up,making it difficult for those on lowerincomes.‘‘This is adding to a growingdisparity between those under pres-sure and those who are financiallystable.’’
But he said household savings hadincreased dramatically since the globalfinancial crisis.
‘‘There is also a new prudence interms of spending habits ’’
Mr Chalke said one of the reasonsthe Australian economy was faring sowell was because of high levels ofimmigration ‘‘keeping the economygrowing and keeping it young.’’
But he stopped short of encouragingpeople to push for a pay rise.
‘‘The thing we have to wrestle withis productivity. We’re living happilyoff the minerals boom but aren’tbecoming productive enough to sus-tain our cost of living.
‘‘We need to prove we can workmore efficiently in order to get paidmore. Upskilling is at the heart of eco-nomic growth, it is about productivityand efficiency.’’

Winery approvedin green wedgeBY SAMANTHA ROBIN
A WINERY has been approved for a patch ofprivately owned land in the peninsula greenwedge.
Following a heated development assess-ments committee meeting last month, Morn-ington Peninsula Shire councillors voted togrant a planning permit for the winery andresidential dwelling on two hectares at 102Coolart Road, Tuerong.
Some councillors, including David Gibb,argued that there was no need for the wineryowners to live on site.
‘‘I am not satisfied that a dwelling in neces-sary. The operators are not required to be onsite full-time,’’ Cr Gibb said.
Cr Tim Rodgers agreed that it was unneces-sary for owners to live on the land.
It is the second time the applicant hasapplied for a permit for the winery. The firstapplication was rejected by the council on thebasis that there was to be no on-site produc-tion.
The renewed plans include a dwelling, vine-yards and production facilities.
Cr Frank Martin said the planning applica-tion was a good fit for the area.
‘‘This property does tick all the boxes,’’ hesaid. ‘‘They have a legitimate product for theMornington Peninsula.’’
The winery will focus on a Chilean style ofwine making, which is rare in Australia.
The applicant’s daughter, Yasmine Aspe,speaking on behalf of her father, describedhim as a passionate wine maker.
She said the unique style of winemakingwould be a popular seller in Melbourne andinterstate.
‘‘My father is very involved in the wine-making culture, and there is a lot of work thatgoes into it. There is no doubt in my mind thatthis will work and will be a success story.’’
The family has been producing wine forthree generations.
Cr Anne Shaw said she applauded theapplicant and wished him the best of luck inhis wine-making endeavour.
Double dunkFlinders MP Greg Hunt and paddling partner Tim McEvoy got dunked as they tried their hand at the Great
Peninsula Paddle from Sorrento to Portsea. The pair came in fourth, and last, place after upturning their kayak
during the event. They brought in the wooden spoon in the category of two men in a kayak aged 40-60.
Sponsored by Reclink Australia, the charity paddles take place each year in Brisbane, Sydney, Geelong,
Hobart, Perth and on the Mornington Peninsula. The event raises money for Reclink, a charity
that supports people who are disadvantaged through homelessness, mental or physical illness or disability
or substance dependence.

INNOVATION and dedication to theenvironment have won the KingsCreek Hotel in Hastings an award.
The hotel took out the AustralianHotels Association state award forexcellence in the category of bestenvironmental practice at a specialpresentation at the Docklands.
Perhaps the hotel’s largest and mostprominent commitment to sustainabil-ity and the environment is its wind tur-bine, which stands out on the horizonalong Frankston-Dandenong Road.
The wind turbine reaches animpressive 22 metres in height andsupplements 20 per cent of the hotel’spower usage each year.
Kings Creek Hotel manager GregAlderson said the turbine was intro-duced by his father, Bruce Alderson,who had the foresight to look to thefuture of energy production andconsumption.
‘‘He was forward-thinking and sawthe benefits of renewable energy sowanted to introduce that to the busi-
ness,’’ Mr Alderson said. ‘‘Every pubuses a lot of energy and the turbinehelps to supplement that.’’
Mr Alderson said that in the pastfew years the hotel had taken a num-ber of steps to become more environ-mentally friendly.
‘‘We have stopped using irrigationon the garden and have formed anagreement with local tree loppers tosupply us with more mulch in order toimprove our garden beds and makethem less water dependent.
‘‘We have chosen drought-tolerantplants and have been very careful in allof our products and finishes to sup-port the environment and ecosystem inWestern Port.’’
The hotel is undergoing a majorrefurbishment, in which much of thematerials will be recycled and reusedin the redevelopment.
Energy efficient, low cost lightinghas also been installed throughout thepremises.
Mr Alderson said he would like tosee more businesses and industriesintroducing energy efficient practices.
‘‘Support for wind farmers is non-existent. We are hotel managers butwe also have to do all our ownresearch and repairs and maintenancewithout any outside assistance,’’ hesaid.
‘‘We also need more governmentsupport to encourage businesses tomake changes.
‘‘It would be good to see the govern-ment support it more with turbinerebates.’’
Mr Alderson said the award waswelcome recognition for all their hardwork.
‘‘It is nice to know that out of all thehotels that go up for the awards, wereceived it. It’s good for little old Hast-ings to come through, and it is a greatway to promote the town.
‘‘The turbine itself creates a lot ofinterest for the hotel, it is somethingwe are always being asked about.
‘‘We will definitely enter moreawards, especially given our lightingupgrade and refurbishments, becausewe have a lot of things on the go,’’ MrAlderson said.

Overgrown grass‘potential fire risk’

NOT enough priority or money is being given toclearing overgrown vegetation from roadsidesand private property, says Mornington residentFred Crump.
Mr Crump, a former council parks and gar-dens worker, is concerned that neither the councilnor VicRoads are keeping potential fire hazardsunder control.
‘‘Who’s responsible for fire prevention? WhenI worked for Cranbourne Council we werealways out keeping the grass down. Now no onewants to take responsibility.
‘‘And I’d like to know how many people havebeen prosecuted for not cleaning up their proper-ties,’’ he said.
Mornington Peninsula Shire’s team leader fornatural systems, Simon Thorning, said vegeta-tion works on council-managed roadsidesincluded mowing and vegetation pruning,primarily for safe passage of users.
He said the council also undertook noxiousand environmental weed control along high veg-
etation roadside sections, fuel management alongselected road sections and roadside weeding tohelp protect rare indigenous species.
‘‘All these works assist in reducing roadsidefuel levels. Funding comes from a number ofdifferent programs, including the $1.6 millionbushland reserve fire management plan.
‘‘The shire is currently working on a roadsidesfire management plan that will build on, andformalise, roadside fuel management works.’’
Mr Thorning said that after increasing fundingfor fire prevention programs over recent years,the shire’s annual fire management spending wasnow $2.5 million.
Work was delivered through a contractualarrangement with a long-term service provider.
‘‘If a resident feels roadside vegetation is over-grown, they should report it to the shire on1300 850 600,’’ he said.
Municipal fire prevention officer Damien Tay-lor said the shire fire prevention inspection pro-gram began in early October.
He said fire prevention officers hadundertaken 4527 inspections of private land and
issued 1542 fire prevention notices. The noticeswere issued to landowners who had properties ina non-fire-ready condition.
Of these, 93 landowners received infringe-ments for not complying with fire preventionnotices and 25 had been forced to pay for a coun-cil clean-up.
Mr Taylor said inspections would continueover the fire danger period.
VicRoads is responsible for maintenance on all
major roads. VicRoads’ regional director formetro south-east Peter Todd said the authorityundertook a systematic program of bushfire riskassessment of all roads for which it was respon-sible.
This was recommended by the 2009 VictorianBushfire Royal Commission.
Mr Todd said works included full-width grassmowing (fire cut) on all rural arterial roads andremoving and slashing vegetation.

ROSEBUD resident Michael Demagistris ismaking a name for himself after appearing inthe first season of the popular Channel 10reality show MasterChef The Professionals.
The chef, who works full-time at theSorrento Golf Club, said it was an opportunitytoo good to pass up.
‘‘I wanted to make a name for myself andthis was something I couldn’t knock back.Whether I got kicked out first or made itthrough to the end it was a great way toelevate my career.’’
Mr Demagistris said he had no idea what hewas getting himself into.
‘‘I was a bit nervous. It was hard trying tofind the different ingredients in the store roomand coming up with creative dishes all thetime. You are putting your career on the lineand these people are expecting quality food.
‘‘The pressure was unbelievable, for me Icouldn’t get my head around it. You walk inevery day wondering what is coming next.
‘‘The worst thing you could do would beto make a mistake on national television, butwe are only human and these things dohappen.
‘‘Now that I am back in my own kitcheneverything feels so much easier.’’
Contestants on the show are competing for$200,000 and a trip around the world to workwith acclaimed chefs. While filming is com-pleted, the winner has not yet beenannounced.
Mr Demagistris said it was a dream to
work with some of the ‘‘gods of hospitality’’.‘‘To work with chefs like Marco Pierre
White and other guest chefs was an awesomeexperience.’’
One of Mr Demagistris’ passions is foodscience. ‘‘I love using food in a way that makesit better than what it is — using different tex-tures, gels and gums can turn food into some-thing creative. I want to bring a little bit oftheatre into my work and get customersinvolved.’’
His dream is to one day own a restaurant onthe Mornington Peninsula.
‘‘I would love to have a restaurant that has abit of everything. Being able to represent theMornington Peninsula through MasterChefwas an honour — there are a lot of good res-taurants here and some excellent produce.
‘‘My aim would be to open a restaurant hereand make it onto the list of the top 100restaurants.’’
Mr Demagistris said he wanted to make hisfamily, including wife and two children,proud. ‘‘My family have supported me all theway. I just want to do the best I possibly canand do them proud. Australians will get toknow who I am as a chef and hopefully oneday they will be my customers.’’

HE’S one of the most recognisable faces in filmand television, and you’d recognise his voice inan instant, but for all his success Samuel Johnsonsays his greatest challenge is yet to come.
The popular actor is about to embark on a15,000-kilometre journey around Australia tospread the word about breast cancer awareness.
Just to make things more interesting, he’ll ridea unicycle the whole way and attempt to raise$1 million.
He aims to beat the current world record forriding a unicycle for 14,686.82 kilometres across48 states of America.
‘‘Twenty years ago we didn’t have mobilephones and my father wouldn’t have a television,so we were forced to entertain ourselves. I taughtmyself to juggle, then incorporated a unicycleand I had an act,’’ Johnson said.
‘‘I remember after I performed in a concertthere was a letter in the local newspaper with theheading ‘Juggler Johnson Inspirational’. I toldeveryone it was my grandma who’d written in,but I will confess now that I actually wrote it.’’
But even more than setting himself such atough personal challenge, the journey is a mes-sage of love to Johnson’s sister Connie, who iscoming to the end of her 24-year battle with can-
cer. Born a year apart, the siblings have sharedher long journey which started with a bonetumour when she was 11, and ending with breastcancer that has now spread throughout her body.
Johnson said it was important to spread themessage to be aware. ‘‘Don’t fall into the boobytrap; be breast aware,’’ he told students during avisit to his old school, Mornington SecondaryCollege.
‘‘I ask every lady in this room to keep track ofyour lumps and bumps. Talk to your mums, your
sisters, your aunties and be aware. Early detec-tion is the key to beating breast cancer.’’
The college’s drum corps will be among 250students to see the actor off on his journey, leav-ing Federation Square on Friday .
Funds raised will go to cancer research andsupport services. The Garvan Research Founda-tion will receive 80 per cent for research intobreast cancer and the rest will go to the EdenMonaro Cancer Support Group. To follow John-son’s trek or to donate, go to loveyoursister.org.
Pristine vision forTootgarook swampTHE Tootgarook swamp is set to benefitfrom an offset of the Peninsula Link freewaydevelopment.
The land — encompassing 200 hectares ofBoneo Park, a 48-hectare slice of MoonahWoodland and a portion of the Tootgarookswamp — is expected to take a decadeto be cleaned up and restored to its originalcondition.
Peninsula Link developer Linking Mel-bourne Authority has provided funding forthe clean-up as part of the offset requirementfor the vegetation removed during thefreeway construction.
Work on restoring the land is expected tostart soon.
Boneo Park owner Rob McNaught hasworked with Trust for Nature to enable acovenant to be placed on the 200 hectares toallow it to be permanently protected and pre-served.
Flinders MP Greg Hunt said the wetlandsincluded in the covenant were home to a largenumber of bird species, including manymigratory birds.
‘‘This is a tremendous example of what canbe achieved and the hope is that this willmotivate other landowners to preserve nativevegetation on their own properties.’’

Man charged with assaultAN 18-year-old man appeared in the
Frankston Magistrates Court on Monday
charged with false imprisonment and serious
assault. Police allege the former Tyabb
resident, now of no fixed address, assaulted a
woman while she was jogging along the bike
path in Hastings, beside the railway line, at
10.30am on Saturday. It is alleged the 47-year-
old Frankston South woman was struck on the
back of the head with a lump of wood,
knocked to the ground and bashed
repeatedly. The man demanded she go into
nearby bushland, but she refused. She was
then continually hit until the piece of wood
splintered into shards too small to use as a
weapon. Police allege he then grabbed hold of
her but she managed run onto Frankston-
Flinders Road and hail a passing motorist,
who took her to the Hastings police station.
The man was apprehended by Hastings police
at the Hastings football oval. The man did not
apply for bail and was remanded to appear in
the Melbourne Magistrates Court.
Police to target speedersPolice have warned they will fine the
increasing number of speeders on Bungower
Road. Sergeant Dave Collins of Hastings
highway patrol said as speeding detected
there had risen since Peninsula Link opened, it
appeared drivers were not slowing down after
exiting the freeway. The speed limit for
Bungower Road is 80km/h. Drivers who are
caught travelling between 10-25km/h over the
limit face a $282 fine and the loss of three
demerit points.
Speed limit loweredDrivers have been reminded the speed limit for
Graydens Road, between Coolart and
Frankston-Flinders roads in Hastings, has
been lowered from 100km/h to 80 km/h.

patrol said the reduction followed several
collisions at the Boes Road intersection.
Critical condition after crashA man was flown to the Royal Melbourne
Hospital in a critical condition following a
collision at Dromana on Monday. The crash
happened at 7.15am when a car turning right
into Collins Road from Nepean Highway was
involved in a collision with an oncoming
16-tonne tip truck with a bobcat on the back.
The driver of the car, a man in his 50s, was the
sole occupant of the vehicle. Rosebud
highway patrol’s Leading Senior Constable
Daniel Magee said the man was lucky to
escape. ‘‘Anybody else in the vehicle would
not have survived,’’ he said. The truck driver
was treated for shock at the scene.

LIVING up to the Two Bays Trail Run motto‘Only the tough survive’, 1000 runners filled thefield for the annual event last month.
It’s not for amateurs — only runners whoqualified were allowed to tackle the28-kilometre course from Dromana to CapeSchanck and only the toughest of all attemptedthe double crossing.
The spectacular route includes Arthurs Seatand Greens Bush forest reserve, passing byBushrangers Bay and the Cape Schanck light-house. Race director Rohan Day said it hadbeen exciting to see the event grow from 500competitors in 2011 to full capacity.
Every Australian state, the United Kingdom,United States, Brazil, New Zealand and PapuaNew Guinea was represented in the run.
A total of 950 finished the run, which alsoproduced its first back-to-back winners: KirstinBull in the women’s 56-kilometre run andTracey Austin in the women’s 28-kilometreevent. In the men’s half course, Stephen Dinneenbroke the old record by more than sevenminutes to finish in 1 hour and 46 minutes.

Recently I was privileged to meet up with Kate Smith, who is the inspiration behind the new Peninsula Wig Library, Presently operating on Thursdays from the Sorrento Community Centre.
This is a free service for women who lose their hair because of chemotherapy. They can now be provided with a wig to boost their self-esteem and dignity while undergoing this treatment. Normally only those with extras on private health insurance are covered for a wig.
Kate Smith runs this library with a team of volunteers. When Kate was undergoing chemotherapy she was asked by the Peninsula Private Hospital to become a foundation member of the committee to address this need.
From there she has expanded the service from Frankston to Sorrento. As well she has helped set up a wig library in Carlton and the Olivia Newton John Cancer centre.
She is always looking to recruit volunteers to sew sleep caps for those undergoing chemotherapy which are a great help in managing their hair loss. Kate can be contacted through the Sorrento Community Centre or mobile phone no. 0401 793 919 for those wishing to avail themselves of this wonderful service, or anyone who would like to volunteer to assist with the sewing of sleep caps.

VISITORS to Point Nepean National Park cannow get a new perspective on the park’sspectacular views of Port Phillip Bay and BassStrait following the completion of a newpublic viewing platform.
The Monash light tower was constructed bythe Port of Melbourne Corporation with theco-operation of Parks Victoria.
PoMC chief executive officer Stephen Brad-ford said the tower was named after Sir JohnMonash, the acclaimed civil engineer andmilitary commander of World War I.
“While it’s not well known, Sir John Mon-ash once worked at the former MelbourneHarbour Trust as a young engineer in theearly 1890s and we’re proud to deliver a com-munity asset which bears his name,” Mr Brad-ford said.
The tower played a key role in the safenavigation of ships in Port Phillip Bay fromthe time it was erected at its present site in1932, until its navigation light ceasedoperation in 2005.
The upgraded tower is powered by solarenergy, wind turbines and a gas generator andwill function as part of a sophisticated
communications network relaying wave data,radar and radio signals to aid commercialshipping.
Interpretive signage on the platformprovides information about the tower’s func-tion, shipping in Port Phillip Bay and identifieskey landmarks in and beyond Point NepeanNational Park.
Nepean MP Martin Dixon, who officiallyopened the platform, said the light had beenan important navigational structure for
decades. ‘‘I warmly congratulate PoMC forthe foresight in incorporating a public viewingplatform into the upgrade of the communica-tions tower for the safe navigation of commer-cial shipping.
“The 360-degree views from the viewingplatform provide a unique perspective on thegeography and landscape of the western tip ofthe Mornington Peninsula from Bass Strait toPort Phillip Bay and will add to the visitorexperience at the park.”

Fourscore, and a fewAustralians are living longer than ever before.While our average life expectancy at birth isaround 82, more Australians are living to 100and beyond. LEE OPITZ talks to three membersof this exclusive club.

Alan Storen jokes the only reason he is stillalive is simply cause “they” just can’t getrid of him.
“They” are his nine children, 32 grandchildrenand 34 great-grandchildren. “I could name mostof them if given the time,” he boasts.
A skilled carpenter, he ticks off the reasons forhis long life.
The first of the Storens to reach a century inmore than 200 years — it became official lastFriday — he never smoked, never drank alcoholand lived a healthy, clean life.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showthat the nation has more than 4250 centenarians— people aged 100 or more — and super-centenarians (110 or older).
That’s about 235 per cent higher than twodecades ago, although the total population grewby just 31 per cent during that time.
But right now Alan is finding it hard to have apositive outlook on life.
“There’s nothing good about living to 100. Mylegs have given away, and I don’t go out the doormuch any more. You just have to make the bestof it,” he said.
Alan married Cicely in 1943. “She was a won-derful mother. She could do anything. She diedon June 5, 2002 at 11.30. In a car accident. Ihaven’t lived long enough to get over it.”
In the 1950s the couple bought a block of landin Dromana where summer holidays were spentcamping in tents, caravans or the back of theutility. They built a house and moved downpermanently in the ’70s. Alan’s still there withson John — “it’s a good world, I’ve got nocomplaints”.
As for the best thing since sliced bread in thepast 100 years? Alan reckons it’s, well, slicedbread.
‘‘It’s a great invention. When you have to slice
bread for 11 lunches every day, it saves a lot oftime.’’
Worldwide, the United Nations estimates,there were about 455,000 centenarians in 2009.That number is predicted to rise ninefold toabout 4.1 million by 2050. As of last year,Australia has one of the highest rates ofcentenarians per capita, behind Japan, France,the US, Canada and the UK.
John McCormack, a senior lecturer at LaTrobe University and an expert on centenarians,says working hard and not being overweight arethe most common characteristics among the 130centenarians and super-centenarians he hasinterviewed.
‘‘It’s assumed that genes have quite a strongimpact for longevity. But there are environmentalinfluences as well and I’ve found that most ofthe people have lived fairly healthy lives,’’ hewrote last year in an article titled ‘Want to liveto 100?.
‘‘Most of them are from a different era, so allthe jobs they had then were physically hard. Wedidn’t have as much food as we have now, andwhen I do a body mass index in my studies, Ihaven’t found any centenarian in Australia whowas overweight.’’
Health advancements and disease control areaiding the rising number of people aged 100 ormore. Their numbers double every eight years.But staying active and being independent are alsofactors.
‘‘We have this stereotype that older people arefrail and decrepit, in a nursing home and not ableto do anything for themselves. I’ve found thatmore than half the people aged 100 live in thecommunity, not in a skilled nursing facility,’’ DrMcCormack says.
If you ask Beryl Sheedy, it’s all down to goodgenes, eating well, a glass of chardonnay everyevening — and chocolate.
Beryl was, and is, a beauty. She has a style andglamour perhaps unexpected in a woman whohas survived four generations.
Born of good Irish stock in Warrnambool onJanuary 14, 1913, Beryl O’Mullane was about18 months old when the family moved to a shopat 198 Glenferrie Road, Malvern, where hermother opened a dressmaking business. It’s stillthere, in its original condition, with a curvedfacade and a concrete kangaroo on top. Buttoday it sells hot fish and chips, not hot fashion.
Beryl, of Balnarring, says her mother taughther the importance of keeping up appearances.
‘‘My mother was a high-class dressmaker whodesigned and made for the society people ofMelbourne. We went to Government House
twice when the Queen was there. Mum loved tosee the women wearing her frocks.’’
Her mother became the breadwinner whenBeryl’s father returned from the battlefields ofFrance, suffering the effects of gas poisoning.
“I remember the noisy trams and trips back toWarrnambool to see the family. We’d start off atabout four in the morning and arrive about fourin the afternoon.”
She’d sit next to her dad in the family’sMaxwell and helped to steer the long course. Shemet Jim at a carnival in Sandringham, where hermother had bought a holiday house. Older bynine years, Jim swept 18-year-old Beryl offher feet.
“He bought me Ashes of Roses perfume, andI’d only known him a fortnight. Every Saturdaynight when we were courting we would go to thetheatre and I always came home with a box ofNewman’s chocolates.”
Although she had worked for her mother, itwas the job of wife, mother and friend that shevalued most. Renowned for her cooking, Berylwould host a tea every weekend featuring herhomemade sweets and cakes.
“I don’t know how I did it while looking afterthe children,” she recalls.
Jim never drove, but perhaps because of thoselong trips to Warrnambool, Beryl loved being thefamily driver.
‘‘Mum was one of the best drivers ever,’’ sonBernie says. ‘‘She always had the car and thefamily heading in the right direction.’’
While macular degeneration has curtailedBeryl’s driving, it hasn’t stopped her from gettingout and about.
Bernie says his siblings and Beryl’s 14grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren haveto make an appointment to see their elusivematriarch: she’s always so busy as an activemember of the CWA, senior citizens club, Legacyand the church, and the unofficial widows’ club,a group of friends who meet monthly for lunchand a flutter on the pokies.
She lives independently and loves tending herthriving garden.
Beryl, who had open-heart surgery eight yearsago, said it would have to be a better world withall the advances in medicine.
‘‘Must write to that doctor to tell him I am stillalive,” she quips.
Longevity trends found in Dr McCormack’sresearch showed there were very few smokersamong centenarians, and the ones who didsmoke gave up at an early age. It also found thatmany of the men who reached 100 wereunmarried.
‘‘As centenarians redefine old age, 65 is almostlike a prime age again. I think that 72 is the new65,’’ he said.
Although the gender gap is closing, womenstill predominate among centenarians.
‘‘Of the 130 people I sampled, 80 per cent werewomen. Women tend to look after themselvesbetter than men, healthwise. More than a third ofmy sample had no children, which is a bit overthe standard representation in the census.

‘‘If they did have children, women often hadthem in their 40s. It seems like they’d delayed, orpushed menopause back a little bit, which maybe an indication that somehow or other theywere ageing a bit more slowly.’’
Perhaps having to wait a long time for her firstchild is the reason Florence Close is still goingstrong.
‘‘I don’t know how I’m doing it. No one else inmy family has lived this long,’’ the 101-year-oldsays.
Already a celebrity for reaching the century onOctober 25, 2011, Florence was pleasantly sur-prised when the Weekly called in to her PattersonLakes home for a chat.
‘‘The paper made a fuss then. I don’t know thatI have anything interesting to tell you.’’
Sitting in the garden she enjoys so much,Florence says it is nice to talk to someone new.
‘‘I think a lot. I sit here in my little house andthink about all sorts of things. But I am luckythat I can still think and still talk.’’
She can’t remember the date she married orwhen she lost her beloved Harry, but he is in herthoughts every day.
‘‘The saddest part of my life was when he wentaway. You would have loved him. I was veryspecial to him. I was very lucky.’’
It was like a bolt of lightning when Harry metFlorence at the ticket counter at Ivanhoe railwaystation.
‘‘He sold me a ticket and I guess he thought Iwas a bit of all right. I liked him straightawaytoo, and he asked me out. I was going out with
another boy at the time, but I gave him the flick.’’After a courtship of outings and ‘‘canoodling’’
in the back of the car, the young couple marriedand were transferred by the railways to RedCliffs in the north-west of the state and set uphome there.
‘‘I hated the heat and there was nothing butrows and rows of grapevines to look at. We hadno conveniences, and I had to cook on a wood-fired stove.’’
While there are good memories of time sharedwith Harry up north, there are painful ones tooof difficulty in getting pregnant and giving birthto a stillborn child — ‘‘you never get over it’’. Butthe long-awaited arrival of her ‘‘precious’’ Johncompleted the family.
A stay-at-home mum, Florence is critical oftoday’s working mothers.
‘‘I don’t understand why mothers shove theirbabies on to someone else. They don’t know theirkids now. Kids get far too much today and theydon’t appreciate it. But that’s just my opinion. Iwould have loved to have had more children, butI’m so thankful that I have John. Family is soimportant.
‘‘Sometimes I don’t think it’s a good worldtoday. It’s just not the same. People want toomuch, and I don’t think they love each other likewe used to. We used to show it to each other. ButI mustn’t moan. I don’t think I’d changeanything. I was happy.’’

stage in the beer garden is Hawaiian surfie singer-songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter.
Musically and stylistically something of a crossbetween Ash Grunwald and Pete Murray,Frankenreiter’s personal brand of boogie tendstowards infectious chug-a-lug, spiced withsharply plucked melody lines.

Frankenreiter said. ‘‘Most of the songs are aboutmy wife and our two boys, and the life that we’vebuilt together in Hawaii.
‘‘This album’s completely unlike anything I’veever done before. We skipped the basics and wentfor a whole lot of different instruments.
‘‘We never brought in a drum set — insteadthere’s handclapping for percussion, or bangingon pots and pans. We were using everything frombells to singing bowls to Zippo lighter. At onepoint we put some beans and salts in a can andshook it.’’
A musical and surf buddy of Americanperformer Jack Johnson, Frankenreiter playedsupport for his Oz tour and has enjoyed afollowing here ever since. Johnson co-producedand played on his self-titled album.

Resignationhits SteelersWESTERN Port Steelers have moved swiftly toreplace Youth League 2 championship-winningcoach Kenny Brunner.
The Steelers announced that George Yerondaiswould be replacing the popular Brunner, whowas forced to stand down for family reasons.
Steelers general manager Marc Pirrotta saidthe club was confident Yerondais was the rightman to continue the giant inroads the YouthLeague 2 boys had made under Brunner.
“There is no doubt that it was a big blow to uswhen Kenny resigned from Western Port Basket-ball,’’ he said.
‘‘However, we respected his decision as he hadto do what was right for his family.
‘‘But our priorities quickly turned to finding areplacement that would not only fit the require-ments of the role, but to also continue the legacyof a successful culture for our Youth League pro-gram and we feel we have found that withGeorge.”
Yerondais is a junior representative coach withthe Steelers and has a strong background inbasketball, having worked with AustralianBoomers coach Brett Brown during his time atBulleen in the 1990s.
Yerondais said the Steelers had the rightsystem in place and he was excited at continuingand expanding the work that has already beendone.
“My vision is to carry on the winning culturethat Kenny’s legacy has left behind with thisgroup,’’ he said. ‘‘Further to that though, myvision is to work in with the senior men’sprogram and head coach Justin Bourchier toopen up opportunities for players who areactively looking to take the next step.”
Yerondais said he believed giving the playersdefined roles and maintaining a strong set ofteam rules was paramount to a successful team.
“Maintaining structure and discipline as agroup I see as one of my key focuses in the initialstages of this program and my involvement,” hesaid.
Pirrotta said the appointment of Yerondaishad been straightforward.
“We went through a pretty arduous processand had a lot of interest from potential candid-ates as well — including some well-known namesaround the Big V community,’’ he said.
‘‘I suppose who wouldn’t want to coach achampionship winning team?
“But George interviewed exceptionally welland brought a clear vision to the table that wecouldn’t ignore. I have no doubt we have foundthe right man for the job and I am truly excited tosee how the youth men’s team progresses through2013.”
Since Brunner quit the post, the Steelers haverun their own pre-season, with Yerondais set totake the reins this week.
“The immediate impact that I will be strivingto achieve is to mesh with the group in order toestablish a level of understanding and rapport,’’he said. ‘‘This will be the key to building the trustand respect required.”
The Steelers play their first pre-season game onSaturday.

MORNINGTON has staged a major coup,defeating league powerhouse Sorrento by fiveruns in their MPCA Provincial Shield match onSaturday.
The Bulldogs are the first side to defeatSorrento this season, stamping themselves as aserious threat come finals.
The Mornington batting line-up offered fierceresistance all the way down the order.
Ben Clements was again at the forefront with aknock of 57.
Senior assistant coach Rob Hearn wasdelighted that his side is brimming with confid-ence, now that the biggest scalp in Provincial isnow under their belt.
‘‘We knew it would be a really tough game,’’Hearn said.
‘‘All we needed was a decent start and we feltwe could win it.’’
Andrew King again spearheaded the Sorrentoattack after taking 12 wickets against BallamPark in the previous round — he snared fivewickets, including the scalp of Clements.

MPNFL sees no drug problems but remains vigilantMPNFL boss Jeff Jones does not thinkthe league has an illicit drugs problembut believes it would be ‘‘naive’’ tothink country footballers are immunefrom recreational use.
While the AFL Victoria Country-affiliated competition falls under theAFL’s anti-doping policy, Jones said hewas unaware of any players beingdrug tested.
Recreational drugs were part ofsociety and ‘‘you would have to be liv-ing under a rock’’ to be unaware ofthem.
‘‘Under the AFL’s doping policycommunity footballers can also betested by ASADA,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s probably not as regimented asthe AFL or VFL.
‘‘You would have to be naive tothink people in sport are not usingrecreational drugs.
‘‘You can see it in everyday life whenyou walk down the street.’’
There has not been a recorded caseof an AFL Victoria Country-registeredfootballer testing positive for drugs.
Country football manager Brett
Connell agreed drugs in society were aproblem and said they were activelypursuing ways to educate communitylevel sportspeople on the perils of drugtaking.
He said there were no plans for drugtesting to take place at a local level butit could happen.
‘‘There has been no research to sug-gest there would be performance-enhancing drugs in country football,’’he said.
‘‘There is no doubt illicit drugs insociety are a massive problem and as a
football community we are doingwhat we can.’’
Connell said AFL Victoria Countrywould be rolling out several anti-druginitiatives over the course of this year.
Jones said the MPNFL wouldembrace anything that contributes tostamping out drugs in sport.
‘‘There are a number of coursesavailable but we haven’t had a drugeducation course since I joined theMPNFL eight months ago.
‘‘We have covered it as part of ourroad safety and alcohol courses.’’
AFL Victoria, which governs com-petitions including the VFL and TACCup, enforces a stringent educationprogram.
VFL players are regularly drugtested and Casey Scorpions’ WadeLees received an 18-month ban forimporting performance-enhancingdrugs in 2010.
AFL Victoria confirmed last week itwould be sending trained staff to VFLclubs to make players aware of risksand subsequent sanctions.

PAT Carey won’t know which way to look intoday’s $350,000 Listed Centrebet MorningtonCup (2400m).
The Mornington trainer could have as many asfour runners in his home town cup as he tries toemulate his 2008 success with Attrition.
In one of the hottest fields in the history of theMornington Cup, Carey will certainly haveMornington Cup Prelude (2000m) winnerDurnford and mare Dame Claire in the startingfield. Carey will also be sweating on starts forAltonio and Angola who are the second and thirdemergencies.
The local hope will be trying to go one betterthan highly-fancied Cedarberg went in 2011when he was narrowly beaten at the post.
Durnford and Angola are sired by the samehorse as Cedarberg who tragically died duringtrack work last year.
“I don’t know about redemption, they onlyever run a race once and you deal with thatresult. I don’t look backwards, you just goforward. The benefit of going forward from thatrace with Cedarberg was that he went on to winthe BMW,” Carey earlier told Inside Racing.
“Durnford is a different type of horse to the
likes of Cedarberg, Ethiopia and Angola whowere all huge horses around 17 hands; he’ssmaller and has a lighter frame and I think there’sa question mark on him at 2400 metres.
“Having said that, when you’ve got a horsehitting the line at the end of 2000 metres, like hedid last start, it always gives you confidencegoing forward.”
