Welcome to the Parish of Saint Augustin
Our mission is to give glory to God and seek the salvation of souls by making Jesus Christ known and loved through worship, evangelization, community, fellowship, reconciliation and stewardship.
The Prince of Peace wants to set the world on fire? This Sunday's Gospel can sound more intense than what we may be accustomed to. It's a passage of contradictions. Jesus so clearly prays for unity, yet here he speaks of division. Why would our God who comes as an offering of love speak so frankly about causing relationships to be torn apart? The sobering truth is that Jesus is divisive. We see this throughout the Gospels, as the Pharisees critique him, the Romans condemn him, and not everyone in the crowd is enthusiastic about his words. Jesus has not come for the purpose of dividing, but what he does is so radical that it upends the status quo. And it doesn't end with his preaching and miracles! "There is a baptism with which I must be baptized." Jesus isn't talking about his baptism at the Jordan River, which has already occurred, but the passing through the waters of death on the Cross and rising again to new life in the resurrection. This is divisive stuff! Christ's spiritual fire turned the "fathers" - the Jewish people and Pharisees - against the "sons" - the common people. Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants to be set on fire with the desire to love others. Some prefer to put on a warm sweater and curl up in front of the TV. In living and loving as Jesus did, we, too, might ruffle some feathers. In disciplining our teenage child for sneaking out, we may cause some division (temporarily, we hope!). In standing up to gossip and the spread of cruel rumors in our workplace, we might cause division. In emphasizing the dignity of both the desperate mother and the unborn child, we might cause division. Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants the Gospel we are invited to live. But that's no excuse not to live it.

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR Next weekend we will finally be revealing our much-anticipated life-sized statues of St. Augustin and St. Monica. This is made possible through the generosity of both the Knights of Columbus and various other donors who gave of their resources explicitly for this purpose. Some may ask why this is being done. Yet if you look around at our beautiful church you will notice that there is something quite striking by its absence, there are no significant images of our patron, St. Augustin. The only image of St. Augustin that is original to the church is in a window in the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chapel. In fact, I suspect that most people don’t even know that he is there. At
some later point an antique statue of St. Augustin was found and installed above the east doorway from the church to the hall, far removed from view. Yet there are no large images in the church that command our attention and are suitable for devotion such as our statues of St. Joseph and our Blessed Mother. To fill that need, the statues were purchased. Yet where to place such a large statue?
In the vestibule of the Church there are two empty niches, which though officially unused in any meaningful way, often attract clutter. One of the niches was the original baptistry, However, the baptismal font has been moved to the sanctuary to enable baptisms during Mass. It is uncertain what the other niche was originally used for. However, such niches in churches have traditionally been used for the placement of statues so it seemed a logical place to find a home for our patron. Yet with two niches the question became who to place in the other niche to accompany St. Augustin. After careful consideration it was determined that St. Monica would be the most appropriate partner for our patron. She was after all his mother who raised him in the Catholic Faith and prayed unceasingly for years for him to return to the Church.
The statues of St. Augustin and St. Monica are custom sculptures crafted in northern Italy by Master Artisans of PEMA in the Val Gardena Region. This area is known for nurturing generations of artists and artisans crafting sculptures of wood, bronze, marble and fiberglass. Their style and finishing are unique to this region, are recognizable worldwide and are known for their realistic expressions. These pieces are carved from select Lindenwood, which is a soft wood considered ideal for carving. The statues are approximately five feet tall and they will be placed on two-foot-tall pedestals made by our maintenance man and parishioner, Paul Cognac. We look forward to them being a source of beauty and devotion to the parishioners of St. Augustin for generations to come.

NINE TO DINE
St. Augustin offers a wide range of opportunities to build community. One of those is Nine to Dine! Members meet once a month, Sept. - May usually a Sunday evening. Groups share a meal and engage in fellowship. Each group has 8 - 9 adults, comprised of singles and couples of all ages. Multiple perspectives make conversations fun and interesting!
Members host once in their home providing the main course, while others volunteer to bring the appetizer, salad, dessert, bread and drinks. An alternate option is to host at a restaurant and provide the appetizer, with each member responsible for the cost of their own dinner and drink.
To join contact Peggy Urtz, [email protected], (515) 473-8416, or Julie Melcher, [email protected], (515) 210-9536 by August 26th.
OUR STEWARDSHIP SAINT FOR AUGUST DEACON JOE COAN
This weekend we celebrate Deacon Joe Coan, Our newest Stewardship Saint of the month.
Deacon Coan has been a St. Augustin parishioner for 42 years, this October he’ll celebrate his 33rd anniversary as a Deacon.
Over the past three decades, he’s presided at hundreds of weddings, funerals and baptisms.
Deacon Coan has been a Chaplain at the Clark Street House of Mercy and the Polk County Jail but it is his outreach to the elderly of the community that is his passion today. He visits numerous senior centers and hospitals on a weekly basis.
Deacon Coan also still loves to preach each month at St. Augustin. Please join us in thanking Deacon Joe Coan for all that he has done to make our parish great, and for his longtime commitment to, and support of, St. Augustin Parish.
