A long season came to an end with a successful block fixture for our A teams against King Henry VIII
Coventry, where all four games were won, and a tougher one for our B teams and Lower School sides, up
against the A teams of St Edward’s, Cheltenham. The 1st XV recorded a convincing 48-0 win at Coventry,
with Alfie B scoring a hat-trick of tries to break the 32 year old record for tries in a season (24). The Colts
also had an impressive away victory, 47-3, against King Henry’s 2nd XV, showing impressive flair against
bigger players and scoring eight excellent tries, three of them by the side’s outstanding player, captain
Toby S-P. The Yearlings ended a testing season with a fine 22-0 victory while the Junior Colts had a big win
to complete a season of enormous progress from their Yearlings days.
The Junior Colts B side also had a good victory, 34-17, with Ethan J once again in excellent form, while a
mixed team drawn from the 2nds and 3rds did well to win 12-5 to end a tough season for both sides in
great fashion. The Yearlings B XV season ended with arguably the team’s strongest performance against a
strong St Edward’s team. Missing a number of regulars including their talismanic lock James M, Bloxham
suffered another blow seconds before the kick-off with captain Patrick M called up to the A team. The
squad was bolstered by three students from the second Form, Ralph R, Jonny S and Will L-J, all of whom
acquitted themselves well against a physical St Edward’s team. Bloxham struggled with St Edward’s
physicality and successful off-loading in the early stages, and were 17-0 down mid-way through the first
half.
Bloxham rallied at this point preventing any further St Edward’s scores in the first half, and scored first in
the second half through Jonny S. Any hopes of a Bloxham comeback were quashed by two further St
Edward’s tries, however Bloxham responded with a fantastic late try of their own, Jonny S finishing off a
fine backs move after fantastic interplay between Toby L, Ralph R and Simon D. Harry N added the
conversions, and 2 minutes later nearly scored the try of the season; awarded a penalty on his own 22’
Harry noticed a gap in the opposition defence almost running the length of the pitch before being tackled
on the 5 metre line. Unfortunately possession was turned over, with the final action being St Edward’s
crossing for their sixth tryWhat was most impressive about the Bloxham performance was the willingness
of all players to step up and play their part. Oliver M took over James M’s responsibility as the main ball
carrier within the forwards, and Will L-J and Ben M both got through a tremendous amount of work in the
back row having never played there before. Special thanks must also go to Ignacio and Diego for filling in
at the last minute and giving their all, as they have done all season.
