Weekly Newsletter 11th July 2016
Dear Parents and Carers,
At Oakdene we ensure that your child is well prepared for the future (for example, changing
year group or moving to secondary school). We have a clear transition policy in place and some
of your children will have already been invited to join mini workshops to prepare them for
their new class in September. Monday, 11th July was ‘change over day’ which means that your
child will have been introduced to their new teacher and
teaching assistants and will have had the opportunity to take a
look at their new classroom. If you have any questions please
approach our class teachers.
At a recent Governing Body meeting it was agreed that the
following organisation of classes will be in effect from
September 2016
Best wishes

During National Sport Week, Olympic gymnast Craig Heap visited our school to inspire the next generation of sports men and women. Craig shared that, as a child from a working class background, he didn’t believe that people like him could be an Olympian. Craig said he was always jumping around the family home and it was his sister who was the first to join a local gymnastics class and so, in a desperate attempt to keep their hyperactive child entertained, his parents took him to the same classes. Craig fulfilled his childhood dream of competing at the Olympic Games when he was 21, where he achieved his personal best performance in the all-around final. Across his career Craig has won 14 British titles and has captained the England team to a gold medal twice in his professional career. The children asked really insightful questions and were genuinely inspired to follow their dreams.
Many of you may recognise Craig as one of the judges from the BBC Tumble programme.
Thank you to all the parents and carers who came along to our recent sports days; it was great to see you all supporting our young pupils.
Andy Seed is a writer and humourist based in North Yorkshire. He's the author of over 20 books including a range of titles for children including The Silly Book of Side-Splitting Stuff (Bloomsbury) - winner of the 2015 Blue Peter Book Award - and the acclaimed funny children's novel Prankenstein. Andy is the third author to visit our school this academic year. He really enthused our KS2 pupils alongside pupils from Wolviston and Bewley Primary Schools

Lucy Carlton Walker from Stockton Central Library launched a great way for children between 4-11 to keep up their reading skills whilst having lots of fun. This summer at your local library, your child can take part in ‘The Big friendly read’, this year’s exciting Summer Reading Challenge. Children need to read SIX books from the library. When they have read all the books they will receive a medal and a certificate - a lasting reminder of the reading they have done over the summer. Joining the library is free, and so is taking part.
Remember to take your Child’s University passport along!

Parents and carers of nursery children attended another really
successful open day last week. The parents that I spoke to were really
impressed with the high expectations we have for our youngest
pupils. Parents enjoyed seeing our fabulous resources and they really
valued opportunities to interact with the EY team.
Beach Schools Visit As a Beach School we recognise there is scope for outdoor play
and learning on the shore. Coastlines offer a unique environment for children’s
discovery and learning. Reception visited Seaton Carew and they really enjoyed their ‘Treasure Hunt Challenge’. Y1 and Y2 visited Saltburn by the Sea as part of their
‘Seaside’ topic. The weather was bright and sunny and all children, parent
volunteers and staff shared a fabulous day.
The children explored rock pools, took digital photographs from the pier and created
sand sculptures. Saltburn has the oldest water balanced cliff tramway in Britain
that is still in operation, linking the town with the pier 120 feet below. The children said the ride was “Amazing!”
STEM subjects (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) are embedded in our KS2 curriculum. Budding scientists from Y3-Y5 went on a voyage of discovery of virtual reality, medicine, marine biology, film and TV, space exploration, explosive chemistry, crime-solving, robots, computer coding, microscopic bugs, giant trucks and more at the Tees Valley Big Bang Fair.
As part of the topic ‘Was Captain Cook Courageous?’Y3 visited the Captain
Cook Museum. This was the perfect way to close their topic. They followed his
amazing voyages and how he changed the map of the world.
