ROSCOMMON Graylingtraveled to the field of
Roscommon to open the2012 season on Thursday oflast week. The young Vikings
of coach Tim Sanchez passeda tough early test, beating the
talented Bucks 28-20 to startthings off on a positive note.
Sanchez figured his youngtroops would make some of
the first-game mistakes thatyoung teams typically make
and he was right. He waspleased for the most part,
though.Were young and we made
a lot of young mistakes and Imade some coaching mis-
takes, he said after thegame. I was very pleased
with our effort, though. Jake(Swander) did a really good
job for his first varsity startand the offensive line played
better than I expected. Beingso young up front, I was con-cerned about us running the
ball but we were able to. Ty(Jensen) had a great night for
us.Swander, a left-handed
junior with a bazooka for anarm, is the latest gunslinger
to lead the Vikings vaunted,high-powered aerial assault.
Swander showed surprisingsavvy for his first start and
remarkable calm under pres-sure. He hit on 27-of-45 aeri-
als for 277 yards and three TDstrikes.
Jake was incredible,Sanchez said. Hes one of the
most complete quarterbacksweve had and he devoted a
lot of time in the off-season
to get ready for this. Im real-ly looking forward to havinghim for two years.
The one play that left
Sanchez and others on theGrayling sidelines shaking
their heads came in thefourth quarter. The Vikings
led 21-12 at that point andhad the ball in Buck territory.
Swander accepted the shot-gun snap from Concrete
Charlie Brown and thenlooked in the direction of
sophomore receiver ScoutTobin. When Scout was cov-ered, Swander didnt panic.
Instead, he turned andlooked to the other side of
the field and, just beforebeing hit by a Buck defender,
released a pretty pass in thedirection of junior Tyler
McClanahan.The result was a 29-yard
TD strike and, followingKevin Harriss fourth perfect
boot of the game, a 28-12lead with 4:40 remaining.
That touchdown passshowed me a lot, Sanchez
said. Jake isnt supposed tobe able to make a play like
that in his first varsity start.Swander, displaying the
cool demeanor of a sheriff ina TV western, showed
remarkable poise in thepocket.
I was supposed to throw
to Scout and then I saw Tylerbreaking open, he told one
of his coaches after comingoff the field.
The Vikings had some mis-fires at times and didnt score
as many points as they couldhave given how well they
moved the ball through mostof the game and how many
yards they racked up. Theyhad one touchdown called
back early and hurt them-selves at other times with
turnovers and miscues.Given that, it was still a
good performance for a basi-cally young team in the first
game on the road against a
talented opponent.Sanchez was particularlypleased with the play ofoffensive linemen Emmett
Helsel, Nick Smock, LucasWalesky, Tyler Wyman and
Brown. The line not only pro-tected Swander in the pocket
but created holes for ruggedsenior Ty Jensen and fluid
junior Michael Branch toplow through.
The running game turnedout to be a key factor in the
win over Roscommon as theVikings protected their leadin the second half. Jensen,
whos about as tough as rawsteak, was the workhorse, amassing 111 yards in 20 car-ries and scoring on a 3-yardplunge up the gut behind the
bust-em-out blocks ofConcrete Charlie andSmock.
Branch was a key contribu-tor in the backfield as well, running eight times for 41
yards.Swander had TD connec-
tions of 9 and 10 yards withglue-fingered junior JusticeJuntilla in the first half.Justice was served twice, once with a lightning laserinto the numbers fromSwander on a slant-in andthen shortly before halftimeon a pretty fade pass fromSwander that Juntillagrabbed in the end zone.
The Vikings led 14-6 at thehalf and increased the lead to21-6 early in the fourth quar-ter when Jensen powered his
way across the goal line tocap a long scoring march.
Roscommon, fighting tothe end on this hot night, ral-lied to trim the lead to 21-12
with a TD march of its own.Bucks QB John Miller foundversatile Austin Fluegel, who
was a thorn in the Vikingsside all game long, for a 17-
yard strike. With 7:04 left to play, the
Bucks tried an onside kickbut the long arms of Wild
Wes Dean corralled the
bouncing ball and preventedRosco from keeping posses-sion. Swander then engi-neered what would prove tobe the game-winning 54-
yard drive, finding the streak-ing McClanahan for the deci-sive 29-yard tally.
Rosco came back one moretime, trimming the lead to28-20 with 3:45 left whenMiller hooked up withFluegel for a 24-yard TD and
then hit tight end R.J.Friedrichsen for two points.
After that, Swander put the
ball in Jensens gut play afterplay and Jensen, legs pump-
ing like pistons, forged for-ward and kept the chainsmoving the clock winding
down.
McClanahan had a mon-ster night at receiver, pulling
in 11 missiles from Swanderfor 144 yards including hisclutch TD catch. Jensen
grabbed six tosses for 51yards and Tobin, one of f oursophomores on the varsity
this season, pulled down fivefor 37 yards.
On the other side of the
ball, OConnells Carnivoresplayed with hunger and pas-sion all the way through.
Linebacker Nick Swierczrecovered a fumble in thefirst quarter and Harris made
a leaping interception tothwart a Rosco drive before
halftime. The versatileMcClanahan also had aninterception.
Wild Wes flowed to the
football like a heat-seekingmissile from his inside line-backer post, making a game-
high 11 tackles. Fellow line-backer Jeff Myers had a bignight also, recording eight
stops.Curtis Wilson, David
Somero, Scott Parkinson and
Juntilla all had tackles behind
the line of scrimmage. The D-
line featuring Myers,
Walesky, Somero, Wilson,
Juntilla and others was phys-
ically punishing against the
run.
Grayling has its home
opener this week against
perennial non-league foe
Houghton Lake (0-1). The
Bobcats are coming off a 34-
20 defeat at the hands of
Frankfort.

JOHANNESBURG Host
Johannesburg-Lewiston held
off a late charge by inspired
Atlanta to hold on for a tense28-26 victory in a spirited
non-league clash on Friday.
The Cardinals of coach
John Bush broke a 20-20
deadlock late in the fourth
quarter when halfback Dillon
Cushman crashed across the
goal line for a 4-yard tally, hissecond of the game, and
Dillon Kibby added what
proved to be the crucial two-
point conversion to give J-L a
28-20 advantage on the
scoreboard.
The visiting Huskies,
fueled by the fiery play ofsenior quarterback Garrett
Badgero, came back in the
final 90 seconds of the game
to pull within two points
when Badgero connecte d
with Josh Barrett for 9 yards.
The Huskies needed the
two-point conversion to tie
the score with 5.7 seconds
remaining and force over-
time but the Cardinals held
on defense to preserve the
narrow lead and gain the
hard-fought victory.
This was a seesaw game
from the start. J-L gained a 6-
0 lead early in the secondquarter on the strength of
Kibbys 48-yard burst to day-
light only to have the Huskies
cruise back to tie the score
when Badgero found Jake
Chambers from 8 yards.
The score was tied 6-6 at
the half but J-L forged ahead
again in the third quarter
when Cushman found a 14-
yard route to the end zone
behind the escort of Dakota
Finnerty and savvy senior QB
Alex Payne called his own
number and ran in for two
points. That gave J-L a 14-6
lead but Atlanta came back
to tie the score again whenBadgero busted loose for 46
yards and Jason Ferguson ran
in the two-point conversion
early in the fourth quarter.
On J-Ls next possession,
Cushman cut loose from 40
yards and suddenly the
Cardinals were on top again,
20-14.
That lasted until Atlantas
next possession when
Badgero faked into the line
and found the fleeting
Chambers for a 41-yard
hookup to tie it again at 20.
The J-L backfield combo of
Dillon Rock (Kibby) andDillon Roll (Cushman)
showed up BIG in the opener.
Kibby cruised to a whopping
222 yards on 20 carries (11.1
yard average per carry) and
Cushman recorded 81 yards
on 10 carries (8.1 yard aver-
age) to go with his three TDs.
Kibby also had more than 90
yards in kick returns. Jake
Newell also added some fuel
to the grinding attack,
amassing 52 yards in 13 car-
ries and Payne produced 40
yards in 11 tries as the
Cardinals generated more
than 400 yards rushing.Badgero had a bountiful
night for the Huskies, collect-
ing 106 yards rushing in 11
carries with one score and
also hitting on 14 aerials for
another 161 yards and three
scores.
Defensively for J-L, it was
Dylan Helms doing it from
his linebacker post, record-
ing a team-high 12 tackles
with a tackle for loss. Nose
guard Wyatt Pelton penetrat-
ed like a human torpedo, tak-
ing part in a dozen tackles
with two tackles for loss. Brad
Kussrow and Logan Miller
each had a sack and Payne
was a major pain in the
Huskies side all game long,
participating in 14 stops.

ELK RAPIDS Wow!
Mancelona opened the
football season Friday at the
field of perennial week-one
rival Elk Rapids and came
away with a dramatic, come-
from-behind 20-14 victory.
The Ironmen of head coach
Dan Boo Derrer trailed 14-
12 with 8:56 left to play but
moved the ball methodically
down the field to complete
an 86-yard scoring drive and
pull out the hard-earned win.
Senior Trevor Ackler, a
member of Mancelonas
vaunted rock-and-sock back-
field, motored the final 10
yards on a counter trap to
complete the march.
It was big for us, Derrer
said. We knew from watch-
ing their scrimmage they
were a lot better than last
year and we we told the kids
theyd be fired up to face us.
Theyre very well-coached
and they were motivated to
beat us at their place after webeat them (48-18) at our
place last year.
Mancelonas explosive
backfield featuring returning
All-State senior Wyatt Derrer
along with Ackler and Justin
Spires at halfback and varsity
newcomer Logan Borst at
fullback has the capability of
going coast-to-coast on any
give snap. The talented Elks
held their ground, however,
and did not give up many big
plays.
Derrer expected that,
though.
We told the kids wewouldnt have the big plays
against them like we did
before, the veteran coach
said. We knew wed have to
grind it out to win. It was a
close game all the way
through and, in the end, it
came down to whether we
could put together a long
drive.
Derrer said he wasnt sur-
prised at how his players
responded at crunch time.
These kids are used to
winning , he said. They
know what it takes to win and
theyre a pretty determined
bunch. Everybody was pretty
gassed by that point in the
game with the heat and
humidity, but they fought
through it. It says a lot about
their character.
Derrer faced a major deci-
sion early in the 86-yard
march when the Ironmen
faced a fourth-and-short
from their own 23-yard line.
Derrer opted to go for it and
savvy senior signal caller Kyle
Schepperley, who doesnt
carry the ball much but is an
integral part of the teamsoffensive success with his
cerebral reads at the line and
the way he engineers the
game, pushed forward on a
QB sneak to move the chains.
After that, the hard-strid-
ing Spires busted loose for a
30-yard pickup and the
Ironmen were on the way.
The Elks faced a steady diet
of Mr. Derrer after that and
he dashed and bashed to
generate 27 yards on six tries
to help keep the march mov-
ing. Borst, starting his first
varsity game at fullback,
pounded the middle forsome critical yards before the
fleet-footed Ackler had his
number called and put the
finishing touches on the
drive, breaking a tackle
behidn the line of scrimmage
before finding a sweet seam
between center Tristen Fleet
and guard Dalton Sulz and
not stopping until he crossed
the goal line.
The famed Ground-and-
Pound offense of the
Ironmen accounted for three
scoring drives of 80-plus
yards in the contest. With the
Dark Diesel Sulz leading
the way up front once again
along with Dakota Orman,
Nick Balhorn, Garrett Derrer,
Darrel Kiel and Fleet and
tight ends Kevin Schepperley
and Brandon Scott, the
Ironmen churned up the turf
in small and large incre-
ments, moving the chains
and chewing up the clock.
It was Kyle Schepperley
capping an 80-yard scoring
march with a 7-yard sprint
around end to account for
Mancelonas first TD of the
young season and TheSheriff, Wyatt Derrer, doing
the damage on a 2-yard
plunge to cap an 85-yard
march that took up most of
the third quarter.
The determined Elks
trailed 12-6 after Derrers TD
plunge but came back to put
on a scoring march of their
own with QB Eddie Shaw
going the final 4 yards.
Anthony Digiovann is con-
version run put the Elks on
top 14-12 with 8:56 to go.
The Ironmen were down
but not out as they put
together another of theirpatented ground-and-pound
drives, this one to secure the
come-from-behind triumph.
Derrer, who was a first-
team All-State pick last year
after amassing more than
1,500 yards rushing and
helping Mancelona to post a
school record 10 wins, got the
2012 season off to a flying
start, producing a whopping
245 yards rushing on 26 car-
ries including his TD plunge.
Borst pushed, pounded and
propelled his way to 74 yards
in 14 attempts while Ackler
racked up 54 yards in 13 tries
and Spires strode to 52 yardsin five attempts.
Coach Boo was particular-
ly pleased with the hard-
nosed play of Fleet and Sulz
up front.
On the other side of the
ball, Mancelonas dark wall of
defiance did a good job of
keeping the Elks high-pow-
ered skill players under
wraps and making the Elks
earn their points.
Sulz and fellow linebacker
Luke Smigielski were in the
thick of things, as usual. Sulz
recorded six tackles and was
a terror with his blitzes,
notching two sacks.Smigielski had five take-
downs and Ackler made four
tackles from his cornerback
post.
Mancelona goes to
Rudyard this week. The
Bulldogs, who are coming off
a loss to Newberry, employ a
similar wing-T type of
offense, though they some-
times to go a shotgun forma-
tion.
They have big kids and
they run hard, Derrer said.
Defensively, they like to
bring a lot of people up front
and be aggressive. We have to
go up there and do our job.

SAULT STE. MARIE
Suffocating defense and sys-
tematic offense was the tick-
et to success for the Petoskey
Northmen in their season
opener Friday at Sault Ste.
Marie. The Northmen of
coach Kerry VanOrman got
the 2012 campaign off to a
positive start with the 21-0
triumph over a scrappy Blue
Devil squad that couldnt do
much offensively but played
hard all the way through.
Petoskey opens Big North
play this Friday, Aug. 31, with
the home opener against
Ogemaw Heights. The
Falcons are coming off a 38-
20 victory over Standish-
Sterling.
If VanOrmans troops con-
tinue to play the kind of
aggressive, penetrating
defense that they showed at
the Sault, theyll be awfully
tough to beat. The Blue
Devils from above the bridge
were limited to less than 100
yards of total offense and
just five first downs.
While the defense was
asserting itself and stran-
gling the Sault, the offense
was doing its version of the
K.V. Tango, striding and
stomping down the field in
turf-grabbing, clock-chew-
ing rhythm. VanOrmans
double-wing assault
accounted for two long
touchdown drives and a
shorter one just before the
half.
It was junior wingback
Chase Ledingham doing
most of the damage, amass-
ing 155 yards of real estate
and scoring on a long burst
of 43 yards and a short
plunge into the end zone.
Sophomore wing Kurt
Boucher capped the scoring
in the second half with a 17-
yard sprint off-tackle to cap
an inexorable 96-yard march
to paydirt.
Ledingham, a varsity
returnee with speed to burn,
broke free to score
Petoskeys first points of the
new season in the second
quarter, capping an 80-yard
drive. It was senior the
strong right leg of Lights
Out Louis Lamberti pro-
pelling the pigskin through
the uprights for the PAT and
a 7-0 advantage.
The lead went to 14-0 in
the final seconds before the
half as Ledingham lowered
the boom and pushed his
way across the goal line to
cap a 39-yard march.
After Petoskey made a key
defensive stop on the Saults
lone trip to the red zone fol-
lowing a takeaway late in the
third quarter, the Northmen
put the game away with a
methodical 96-yard drive
that featured the sweet feet
of Ledingham, Boucher and
senior quarterback Quinn
Ameel.
It was Boucher who put
the finishing touches on the
march, finding a seam and
surging to the end zone to
record the first varsity touch-
down of what will probably
be many in his promising
prep career.
Ledingham carried the
ball 22 times on his way to
155 yards and Boucher bust-
ed and burst to 71 yards in 15
carries. The elusive Ameelaccumulated 61 yards rush-
ing in 10 tries and was as
efficient as the times tables
engineering the double-
wing attack. When he went
to the airways, Ameel hit on

The Department of Natural
Resources reminds hunters
that fall turkey hunting
license drawing results and
leftover license quantities are
available at
ww w.m ic hi ga n. gov /h un t-
drawings.
Hunters are encouraged to
visit this website for updated
license availability informa-
tion. Unsuccessful appli-
cants could begin purchasing
one leftover license online or
from any license agent on a
first-come, first-served basis
for a one-week period begin-
ning Aug. 20 at 10 a.m. EST.
Now, the remaining fall
turkey hunting licenses can
be purchased by any hunter,
including those who did not
apply for a fall turkey license.
A hunter may buy one
license per day until the quo-
tas are met.
As of Aug. 15, there are
licenses available in fall
turkey management units L,
M, W, HA (public or private
land) and YY (private land).
The majority of the licenses
are available in unit YY
(45,000 licenses) for private
land in southern Michigan
and Beaver Island. Here are
the remaining leftover licens-
es as of Aug. 15:
* Over 800 licenses avail-
able in Unit M;
* Over 500 licenses avail-
able in Unit HA;
* Over 400 licenses avail-
able in Unit L; and
* Only 40 licenses available
in Unit W.
Fall turkey season opens
Sept. 15 and runs through
Nov. 14. Fall turkey season
provides a great opportunity
for hunters to get a bird for
their Thanksgiving dinner,
said DNR upland bird biolo-
gist Al Stewart. And because
the season runs through Nov.
14, it gives archery deer
hunters the chance to pursue
another game animal during
the archery deer season.
Hunters have an additional
opportunity to get a fall
turkey license by applying for
the 2013 Pure Michigan Hunt
drawing. Each application is
$4 and hunters may apply as
many times as they like.
Three lucky winners will
receive a hunt package that
includes a fall turkey, spring
turkey, elk, bear, antlerlessdeer license and a reserved
waterfowl hunt. For more
information, go to
www.michigan.gov/puremic
higanhunt. Season dates and
regulations have not yet been
established for the 2013
hunting seasons.

In the 2012 football season
opener last Thursday night,
the Gaylord Blue Devils start-
ed strong but couldnt keep
up with the tough
Cheboygan Chiefs team.
On the opening play of the
game Gaylords Trae Hill
busted loose for a 66-yard
touchdown leaving the
Chiefs defense rattled.
However this was the only
concern Cheboygan had as
they went on to win 42-7. Itwas a big day for head coach
Jack Coons team as not only
did they avenge last years 12-
7 loss to the Blue Devils, but
also debuted a new football
complex that was as impres-
sive as the teams win.
After Hills strike, the
Chiefs defense started turn-
ing up the heat forcing punts
on the next 2 possessions
while the offense turned the
defensive stops in touch-
downs. Damon Proctorstayed cool under pressure as
he led his team 63 yards
down the field to even the
game at 7-7 with Ben Pearson
capping off the drive with a 3
yard score. The next time
Proctor took the field he
threw a bomb to Austin
Ginop setting up Nick Comps
to cross the goal line from 6
yards out.
With the score 13-7 just
before halftime Proctor exe-
cuted an excellent fake to histailback before hitting Stan
Swiderek from 10 yards out.
Cheboygan then hit a 2-point
conversion to take a 21-7
halftime lead.
The second half was all
Cheboygan from start to fin-
ish. Adding to his already
stellar day Proctor continued
having his way with the Blue
Devil defense leading his
team to the end zone two
more times before the game
was over. He even made hismark on the other side of the
ball by picking off one of
Gaylords senior QB Tyler
Frischs and taking it in for a
defensive score.
Although the score indi-
cates a blowout, the game
was played much tighter
than that. The Blue Devils
just made too many costly
mistakes that the Chiefs rou-
tinely turned into touch-
downs. The Blue Devils are in
action this week as they hostTraverse City St. Francis on
Thursday, August 30 at 7pm.
Cheboygan will match up
against Pellston, Thursday,
August 30 at home. Next
week Gaylord has an unusual
Saturday game in their Big
North conference opener
against Traverse City West.
Kickoff is at 1pm.
Chiefs Look Strong in Opener Against GaylordFootball
By Mike Dunn
ONAWAY It was quite a
home opener for Onaway on
Friday and quite a debut as
head coach for Brian
Whitsitt. The Cardinals
showed their explosive capa-
bilities on offense and their
stiff resistance on defense in
a well-played 28-0 victory
over Inland Lakes.
The speedy Cardinals, who
won five of their last six
games a year ago, kept the
momentum going into the
2012 campaign and gave
Whitsitt, who had served the
previous four years as defen-
sive coordinator for Onaway,
a resounding win in his first
game as the head man.
Onaway showed up big on
both sides of the ball and on
special teams. In the first
quarter, a blocked punt by
Chris Cleaver gave Onaway
the ball at the 4-yard line and
led to the first points of theseason when fullback Chae
Whitsitt powered his way
across the goal line. Carlos
Bautistas PAT made it 7-0.
Just before halftime, it was
QB Matt Tollini making his
first varsity start hooking
up with the streaking figure
of Touchdown Tommy
Auger for 39 yards over the
middle just 15 seconds
before intermission.
Bautistas boot gave Onaway
a sudden 14-0 lead going into
the locker room.
In the third quarter, it was
Tollini firing long again, this
time finding super speedy
Jason Sigsby out of the back-
field for a 46-yard TD con-
nection and in the fourth
quarter it was Whitsitt
whacking his way into the
end zone again for another 4-
yard score. Bautista split the
uprights after both TDs.
Tollini, who stood tall in
the pocket in his first start,
hit on 10-of-14 aerials for 202
yards and the two long
scores. The shifty Sigsby gen-
erated 46 yards rushing and
95 yards receiving and
Whitsitt put up 38 yards
pounding the ball between
the tackles.
Senior Justin Gedda and
Tollini each had eight tacklesto lead the Cardinals defen-
sively and Gedda also recov-
ered a fumble. Whitsitt and
Auger each made seven stops
and the opportunistic
Cleaver made five stops with
a sack and the blocked punt.
Inland Lakes played hard,
physical football, like always,
and did a good job for the
most part of keeping the
dangerous backfield duo of
Sigsby and Whitsitt in check.
The difference was Onaways
ability to make the quick
strike, especially through the
air.The Bulldogs were not able
to generate much offensively,
either, and that led to the
defense being on the field for
long stretches.
Cody Bonilla busted for 46
yards on 12 carrie s and
Jordyn Smeltzer recorded 40
yards in 11 tries.
Christian Wallace had a big
game defensively for the
Bulldogs, making 12 take-
downs, and Bonilla made
seven tackles and had an
interception in the end zone
in the second quarter.
Onaway travels to Rogers
City (0-1) this week and theBulldogs travel south to
Johannesburg-Lewiston (1-0)
for a JV-varsity doubleheader
starting at 4 p.m. on Friday.
Pellston 13
Forest Area 6
FIFE LAKE It was a
super debut for Pellston first-
year head coach Ben Schley
on Friday as the Hornets
traveled south to Forest Area
traditionally a very tough
venue to play at and came
away with an impressive 13-6
triumph.
The hungry Hornets
scored all their points in the
first half and then held off a
late Forest Area rally to
secure the win.
Backfield mates Justin
Price and Jake Friedenstab
each tallied as Pellston built a
13-0 advantage. Price, who
rocked and rumbled to 70
yards in 15 attempts, hit pay-
dirt from 5 yards out and
Friedenstab, who fought his
way to 56 yards in nine tries,
flew through a seam and
found the end zone from 9
yards. Austin Wright, in addi-
tion to engineering the
Hornet attack, connected for
35 yards through the air.It was up to the Pellston
defense in the second half
and the Hornets held firm to
secure the victory. The
Warriors lone TD came late
in the game on a 45-yard
hookup from QB Tyler Birgy
to the fleeting figure of angu-
lar Justin Burke. Aside from
that, the Hornets did a good
job of keeping the dangerous
Forest Area skill players
under wraps.
Sophomore Tom Redmond
covered the field like fertilizer
for the Hornets. T-Red
racked up a dozen tackles
with a sack and a fumble
recovery. Jared Reimann also
recorded a sack and recov-
ered a fumble. Travis
Matthews and Kurtis Spencer
each corralled ball carriers
eight times and Friedenstab
flowed to the football and
made seven stops.
Pellston, which has not
posted a winning record
since 1995 and has already
matched its win total from
last year, is on the road again
this Friday, Aug. 31, against
perennial foe Gaylord St.
Mary. Last year Pellston
earned its lone win against
the Snowbirds, 23-6. This
year the young Snowbirds
appear to be muchimproved, however, as they
gave Hillman a very tough
game last Friday before los-
ing 27-14.
JVJohannesburg
Lewiston 20
Alpena 12
JOHANNESBURG The
Johannesburg-Lewiston JV
squad grinded out 258 yards
of hard-won real estate on
the home field Thursday of
last week and defeated theAlpena freshmen by a score
of 20-12.
The Cardinals L.H.
Hammer, Logan Huff,
pushed and pounded
between the tackles while
accumulating a game-high
125 yards and scoring twice.
Huffs second TD, a 68-yard
sprint right up the gut, sealed
the deal for J-L. Huffs score
gave the Cardinals a 20-6
lead with 1:38 left to play.
Alpena reached the end
zone just before time expired
when Wes Garant went 7
yards to account for the 20-
12 final score.
Huff also tallied in the first
quarter on a short run to give
his team a 6-0 advantage and
quarterback Brandon Huff
plunged over in the second
quarter to make it 12-0.
Logans conversion made it
14-0 at the half.
Alpena trimmed the lead
to 14-6 early in the fourth
quarter but the Cardinals
responded when Logan
launched himself through
the hole and outraced every-
one to the end zone.
The May Day Attack of
the young Cardinals was also
effective as Ethan May (12 for
67) and Nick May (12 for 60)
put some of the grit andgrind into the J-L ground
assault.
Dangerous Dan Nieman
had a sack and a fumble
recovery for J-L and Nick May
also had a fumble recovery.
Logan Huff had a sack to go
with his team-high 12 tackles
and Nate Fox was a fearsome
front up front, recording two
sacks.
Elk Rapids 58
Mancelona 18
MANCELONA The visit-
ing Elks got off to a strongstart, outscoring host
Mancelona 27-6 in the first
quarter en route to a 58-18
triumph in the JV opener for
both teams.
Chase Wilcox had a big
night for the Ironmen, rip-
ping, romping and rocking
his way to 203 yards of real
estate on 18 carries, includ-
ing TD sprints of 45 and 64
yards. Cole VanWagoner
showed once again that aV.W. can motor like a Jaguar
when he broke loose for a 30-
yard journey to the end zone
in the fourth quarter. Cole
picked up 58 yards in 15 car-
ries and Joey Wojcik generat-
ed 24 yards on eight tries.
VanWagoner convened a
Whack Session whenever an
Elks ball carrier came his
way, making a team-hig h
eight tackles. Wilcox chased
down seven tackles. Nick
Biehl, Tyler Pickering and
Tyler Fults each made seven
stops while Outlaw Jesse
Janus and C.J. Short eachmade six takedowns.
