ANNUAL MEETING AND AWARDS BANQUET 2018! “IMPROVING BUSINESS-IMPROVING LIFE” To make the Annual Meeting/Awards Banquet the success that it is, we first have to give a big thank you to all of our sponsors. Your help and support is what makes our Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet such a success each year. Also, I would like to give a great big thank you to the Annual Banquet
Committee and Chamber staff for all of their work and effort. They put in many hours to make sure the event goes off without a hitch. Thank you to Paul Hamelink for his excellent job as Master of Ceremonies and congratulations to our very deserving award winners, Pauley Lumber Company for the Pioneer Spirit Award, Doug Oakeson for the Outstanding Community Service Award, Hastings Public Library for the Max Award, Carmichael Construction and Farris Construction Company for the Business of the Year Award - twenty-six or more employees, Odyssey for the Business of the Year Award – up to twenty-five employees, and the YWCA Adams County for the Non-Profit of the year award. All of those recognized have been very instrumental in helping shape our community and surrounding areas. Thank you everyone for attending and for all of the positive comments we have received regarding this year’s program. Thank you!!!!
GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS — LEGISLATIVE LUNCHEONS & MORE! With the Nebraska Legislature in full swing, our Governmental Affairs Committee has been busy attending meetings, lunches and calls, talking with Senators on issues that are and will be affecting our community. We have one more Legislative luncheon scheduled on March 8th. The luncheon will be from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the State Capitol in room 1126. We will carpool and leave from the chamber at 10:00 a.m. and should be back around 3:00 p.m. It is a great opportunity to talk to the Senators about any issues you may have a concern with. Please contact the chamber at 402-461-8400 if you are able to attend so we can have an accurate count for meals.
Other Governmental Affairs events: We have had two Coffees with Senator Halloran and one more schedule for March 31st. They will be at Kitty’s Roadhouse starting at 9:00 a.m. It is your opportunity to come and listen to the Senator’s comments and to ask questions regarding any issues before the legislature at this time.
We also provide Legislative Conference calls. The remaining scheduled dates are March 15h and 29th and additional call if necessary. They begin at 2:10 p.m. and last approximately twenty minutes and are here at the Chamber Development Center. During these conference calls we discuss issues affecting the business community that have been introduced this legislative session. Again this year, after the legislative session is over, we will be scheduling additional coffees with our Mayor, City Council Representatives and County Supervisors. Dates are yet to be determined. By scheduling these different events we hope to give all segments of our membership an opportunity to ask questions and voice concerns regarding issues that are important to them at all levels of government.
WHOOPERS AND HOOPERS 2018 — THE 37TH YEAR! This basketball tournament is the premier and largest 5-on-5 adult basketball tournament in the mid-west if not the largest in the United States. This year’s dates are March 16th, 17th and 18th. Again, we are anticipating over one hundred and twenty teams, which means with just players alone, this event will bring in over 1000 competitors to Hastings and the surrounding area. With family and friends the number is much higher. The committee is working very hard at making this tournament a success, but there are two things we still need. First, we need more sponsors. Without sponsors this tournament could not take place. One of the comments heard most is that – the tournament will not have an impact on my business. Whenever you have $500,000 to $1,000,000 of actual dollars spent in any community, ove a weekend, it will have an impact on the majority of the businesses in a community, if not directly then indirectly through secondary sales of goods and services. Second, we need a significant number of volunteers. It takes over 250 volunteers for the weekend so if you could help for just two hours any time from Friday night through Sunday afternoon it would be greatly appreciated. You would also have an opportunity to watch some very good basketball that includes a number of past college and current professional basketball players.
Thank you for your membership in the Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce!!!

Whoopers & Hoopers Basketball Tournament! If you or anyone you know would be willing to help out for two hours on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, March 16th, 17th, or 18th please contact Mikki Shafer at 402-461-8402.
This tournament brings A LOT of money into Hastings. In order for the Chamber to continue to host this event we need your help.
