Virus Lecture
Virus
•The nonliving Undead
Virus Characteristics
• About as big as a protein • Basic Virus Anatomy
1. outer protein coat 2. Inner core of nucleic acid
Viruses cannot reproduce on their own
Kinds of Viruses:
• -Viruses cannot be stopped using antibiotics because they are non-living particles!
Virus reproduction
• They cannot reproduce outside of a living cell!• Host specific – Rabbit viruses only infect specific rabbit spp– HIV only infects certain white blood cells
• They cannot reproduce outside of a living cell!
Virus Reproduction
• 1.) attach to host cell• 2.) viral DNA or RNA enters cell • 3.) viral DNA or RNA codes for proteins and
enzymes of the virus
Lytic vs Lysogenic
• Lysogenic – latent period – not actively producing viruses
• Lytic – producing more viruses… like crazy!
Retrovirus
• Viruses that carry RNA• Also have enzyme called reverse transcriptase • RNA DNA, • Than DNA is incorporated into host’s DNA,
Prions… yikes!
•Verdi Is our favorite!•-Jon
