Agenda:
• Discover what virtual reality is and gain a brief historical summary of it.• Understand how VR will change everything ranging from
gaming to education.• Learn about the various products coming out in 2015/2016.• See how libraries and makerspaces are making use of VR.
What is real?

Virtual - not physically existing as such, but made by software to appear to do so.

Virtual Reality is a realistic simulation of an environment, including 3D
graphics, by a computer system using interactive software and hardware.

Basically, it is a computer trying to trick your brain into believing that you are in a different environment.
A headset displays an image. That image will be modified when you move your head and/or interact with it.
What is virtual reality?
Depth of Information - amount and quality of data in the signals a user receives when interacting in a virtual environment.
Components of Immersion (Jonathan Steuer):

Breadth of Information - the number of sensory dimensions simultaneously presented.
•Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML)- the earliest 3D modeling language for the Web.
•3DML - a 3D modeling language where a user can visit a spot (i.e., a Web site) through most Internet browsers after installing a plug-in.
•X3D - the language that replaced VRML as the standard for creating virtual environments in the Internet.
•Collaborative Design Activity (COLLADA) - a format used to allow file interchanges within 3D programs.
Some techie info:
Origin/Timeline• Cinematographer Morton Heilig in the 1950’s conceptualized an all
sensory theater experience.• First Head Mounted Display (HMD) developed in 1961.• Ivan Sutherland’s “Ultimate Display” concept guided almost all the
developments within the field of virtual reality. In 1966, he built an HMD that was tethered to a computer system.• In 1984, Michael McGreevy started exploring human-
computer interface (HCI) designs. • Jaron Lanier created the term “Virtual Reality” in 1987. • Facebook acquires Oculus Rift for $2 billion in 2014.

VR in other industries• Gaming, film, and entertainment industry will be huge! • Car companies use it to test virtual prototypes.• Architects build virtual models of new building designs.• Medical, military, space etc. use VR to train. Flight simulators.• Some surgeons have done procedures remotely using VR.• Therapists use it to help safely treat people’s fears.• Will people actually read and study in VR? • I hope so. I would prefer my surgeon, for example, to have explored the
interior of the human body in 3D vs. the 2D textbook. Both would be ideal!
is an online virtual world that started in 2003! It is similar to MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games); however, Linden Lab has said that SL is not a game because “there is no manufactured conflict, no set objective".

In our 3D design/printing classes we teach how to
export Tinkercad designs to Minecraft.
There are a lot of libraries fostering
Minecraft communities too!
