Over the last 55 years Veth Propulsion BV
has gained a reputation in the maritime
world. During this time the company has
evolved as a specialist for thrusters known
for their intelligent design, solid construction
and easy maintenance. The Veth-Z-Drive and
the Compact-Jet were developed In
Papendrecht. Various kinds of bow thrusters
– such as the well-known Veth-Jet channel
system – were also originally developed by
the Dutch company.
Apart from the thrusters Veth Propulsion BV
has a Diesel engine department which
makes it possible to supply the thrusters
together with a Diesel engine, whenever
required. Also, generator sets are built by
the same department.

The Veth-Z-Drive allows a greater
flexibility than conventional drives when
planning the setup of the engine room.
Because the engine can be placed next to
the Veth-Z-Drive the space necessary is
reduced to a minimum – leaving extra
room for passengers or cargo.

For mounting inside the hull the rudder propeller is provided
with a foundation the bottom plate of which corresponds with
the line of the hull plating. This foundation can be flexibly
mounted to avoid contact with the ship’s body from the engine
to the propeller. The Veth-Z-Drive is therefore an excellent
choice where the noise level has to be kept low. One more
advantage: the unit can be mounted or dismounted
- depending on the vessel’s draught - without the ship
being dry-docked.

Apart from the standard design
Veth Propulsion BV offers a counter-
rotating system (CR). The CR
Veth-Z-Drives present a completely
new dimension of efficient
low-noise propulsion. The CR unit
combines high efficiency and small
propeller diameters with reduced noise emission.
The power is distributed over two propellers which results in a
better performance. Within the CR unit both propellers rotate in
opposite directions, so that the second propeller compensates
the whirling of the water caused by the first propeller.
As a consequence rotation loss is minimized with maximum
efficiency gained from the available power and propeller
diameters.

The optimum number of revolutions is about 20% less than a
single propeller or two rotating in the same direction. The low stress
on the propeller blades and the lessened turbulence of the water
contribute in obtaining a low vibration and a silencing effect.
The propellers of the counter-rotating Veth-Z-Drive are mounted
on opposite sides of the hydrodynamic streamlined underwater
gearbox. With this arrangement, a more solid bearing and secure
sealing system is created compared to placing the two propellers
on one side.

The Veth-Z-Drive has a built-in disc-clutch to achieve a short
construction length. This robust clutch is especially laid out for
heavy-duty operations, such as the frequent engaging and
disengaging of gears on a ferry boat.

What is not possible with conventional propulsion, poses no
problem to a Veth-Z-Drive, the height of the propeller is adjustable
thus enabling a discharged ship to manoeuvre without ballast.
This application allows an adjustment of the installation to various
heights. It is also possible to make installations, which can be
completely retracted within the ship’s construction (photos above),
an application often used for auxiliary propulsion for off-shore
installations or for mega-yachts.
Because of the ingenious universal gear coupling system,
the Veth-Z-Drive can be completely uncoupled from the driving
engine, in particular when combined with Diesel engine installations.
This makes it possible to reduce the space for the installation in spite
of the height adjustment.

The Veth-L-Drive is a good choice when
an installation is driven electrically or
hydraulically. In this case the engine is
mounted vertically but without the upper
gear-box with the free-wheel clutch.
The integrated steering wheels, however,
are the same as in the Veth-Z-Drive.
Over the years Veth Propulsion BV has
obtained special expertise with Diesel
electric installations. A frequency control
can be supplied together with the
electromotor.

Easy installation is an advantage of the
Veth-Z-Drive. It can be mounted and dismounted
outside a dry dock, depending on the vessel’s
draught. The Veth-Z-Drives are custom-made with
a foundation adapted to the hull’s construction.
The Veth-Z-Drives are very compact due to
the integration of transmission, clutch and
steering wheels into one system. Up to an input
power of 550 kW a worm gear is used for steering.
For drive power exceeding 550 kW a slewing gear
is used. Large transmissions ensure extremely
accurate steering.

Veth Propulsion BV has changed
many a vessel without it’s own
drive into an independent self-
propelling vessel by means of deck
installations, for which well
insulated, noise-absorbing casings
are used. The construction of the
shell is as compact as possible,
while the engine remains within
easy reach for service and
maintenance. Deck installations
are often furnished with a height
adjustable propeller.

The electronics department of
Veth Propulsion BV puts considerable effort
into research and development. Complete
operating systems for the Veth-Z-Drives are
designed and manufactured by the company.
Although reliability and functional
efficiency come first, good appearance
also gets attention. For the particular Veth-line
foil panels with an ergonomic control lever are
used. Veth Propulsion BV regularly develops
specific solutions for its clients, such as
synchronized control levers by means of
an electronic shaft system, or electronic
interfaces for a Dynamic Positioning System
or pilot. Veth Propulsion has also developed
an intelligent electronic pilot mainly for river
navigation.
