The written word hasincreasingly become a focus ofmodern art.

It’s also the theme of anexhibition that opened Mondayin the John A. Day Gallery on thecampus of the University ofSouth Dakota.

“The Written Word” featuresthe work of five artists who createusing word-based texts: ElissaLevy, Karen Baldner with BjörnKrondorfer, Trong Nguyen, NinaKatchadourian and An Xiao.

“These artists are exploringmaterials,” said Alison Erazmus,Director of the University ArtGalleries. “They’re not just takinga book and altering it, they’reusing newspapers and puttingtexts and translating that tograins of rice, they’re usingTwitter feeds as a way to examinethe written word in digital media.

“It’s definitely what I wouldconsider a very contemporaryshow in the sense that artists arereally exploring a variety ofmaterials to understand andexplore the written word,”Erazmus said.

Levy was on-hand atMonday’s opening to discuss herwork and meet students andmembers of the public.

“It was really exciting to havea big group of students,”Erazmus said. “I think at least 70to 75 were in the gallery lookingat the artwork.”

Word-based art has beengrowing in popularity, both withthe public and the artiststhemselves, Erazmus said.

“A lot of artists are very goodresearchers, so obviously, thatcomes with reading quite a bit,”she said. “From my perspective, Isee a lot of artists referencingbooks and texts, and creatingsigns, using words in their ownartwork as an expression ofvisual art.

“This (exhibition) is moreexplicitly connected to writing

and the written word,” she said.“Either it’s already beenproduced, or the artists aregenerating their own writing. It’sdefinitely focused on that.”

Some artists even use existingbooks in their pieces, as in“Bound and Unbound II,” analtered book exhibition that is ondisplay in I.D. Weeks Librarythrough Friday, Dec. 20.

“Either artists make their ownbooks … or they’re taking booksthat have been withdrawn, thrown away, and repurposingthem and making them into avisual art object,” Erazmus said.

In addition to the art on display,USD graduate students also willperform a piece of Xiao’s called,“Together/Alone” at 2-5 p.m. onNov. 8 and Nov. 15, as well as from

5-7:30 p.m. on Nov. 22.Erazmus will lead a gallery

discussion for the Boos inContext Series hosted by theVermillion Public Library at 7p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, at theDay Gallery.

These events are free and opento the public.

“The Written Word” will beon display through Nov. 24.
