Advantages of Pulse Radar Measurement
VEGAPULS WL 61 uses short radar pulses to measure the distance to the surface of the water. Because the signals propagate independently of the surrounding environment, the measurement is not influenced by fluctuating temperatures, wind, fog, rain, or snowfall. Its high precision remains unaffected under all operating conditions. This is a critical advantage, especially for flow rate measurement in open channels, since differences of even a few millimeters can cause significant measurement errors.
The characteristics of the radar signal also allow the measurement to be unaffected by most types of foaming. This allows the VEGAPULS WL 61 to provide an accurate and reliable measurement in difficult waste water applications where foam is present, such as lift stations and sludge tanks.
Since the VEGAPULS WL 61 radar signal is a microwave and not a sound wave such as ultrasonic, it is unaffected by any buildup or condensation on the sensor. This type of signal can also pass through plastic materials, ideal for external mounting of the VEGAPULS WL 61 on chemical tanks. This isolates the VEGAPULS WL 61 from the corrosive environment within the tank.
Application Areas
Level Measurement for Control of
Screen Raking
Level Measurement in the Lift Station
The VEGAPULS WL 61 sensor measures how much water is in the catchment. Mounted over the inlet to the catchment, it measures the current level with high precision. The difference between the water level on each side of the screen indicates the degree of contamination of the screen and activates the rake or cleaning process.
▪ Reliable, maintenance-free measurement ▪ Simple installation thanks to non-contact measuring principle
▪ Unaffected by foam or condensation
The highly focused measuring signal of VEGAPULS WL 61 offers substantial advantages, especially in cramped spaces. The sensor works reliably, even if there is foam and buildup on the shaft walls.
▪ Non-contact measurement ▪ Measures through most waste water foam
▪ NEMA 6P fully submersible ▪ Pump control in conjunction with VEGAMET 391
VEGAPULS WL 61 is optimized for the varying applications in the water/waste water industry. The sensor’s large number of mounting options and different connection concepts combine for use in any of the typical application areas in this sector.
Flow Rate Measurement in
Open Channels
VEGAPULS WL 61 is the ideal sensor for flow rate measurement in open channels and at outfall weirs. Unaffected by temperature, wind, and weather, the radar sensor measures the actual flow with high precision.
▪ Independent of environmental influences ▪ Flow measurement in conjunction with VEGAMET 391
▪ Maintenance-free operation

Concentration Tank
Level Measurement in
Chemical Tanks
Before the sludge enters the digestion tower, it is stored in large vessels. During storage, the sludge is dewatered and thickened. Sometimes, scrapers and agitators are used to accelerate the process.
▪ Unaffected by large changes in temperature and humidity
▪ Immune to interferences related to buildup or condensation on sensor
▪ Measures through most types of waste water foam
Aggressive chemicals such as “alum” (aluminum sulfate) and “hypo” (sodium hypochlorite) are used throughout the waste water treatment process. The VEGAPULS WL 61 is an ideal solution to measure the level inside chemical storage tanks as the radar signal can travel through plastic materials.
▪ Non-intrusive measurement for plastic tanks
▪ Radar signal cuts through condensation and foam within tank
▪ Maintenance-free operation
Level Measurement of Rivers
and Canals
Due to its compact design, VEGAPULS WL 61 works particularly well for monitoring the levels of rivers, canals and lakes. The sensor can be easily mounted on existing structures such as bridges or sluices.
▪ Independent of environmental influences ▪ Unobtrusive design protects against vandalism
▪ Versatile mounting options
