Dear Members,
After a thoroughly enjoyable summer break LPS resumed evening meetings last week with an excellent
talk from Rafael Guerra of Schlumberger. Rafael gave us a fabulous talk on well to seismic tie
challenges in presalt which prompted healthy debate and discussion. The evening meeting was well
attended by students and experienced professionals alike.
It is with sadness that I also have to report the passing of a fellow LPS member, David Morgan of
Uncertainty Resources Ltd who gave significant contribution to the industry. Our thoughts are with
David’s family at this time.
Our next one day seminar will be held on Thursday 25th with title “Drilling 101” covering everything
from well design to directional drilling and mud systems. Registration details are on the website.
We will also hold a Value of Information one day training session on Thursday 2nd October which will be
presented by Decision Strategies Inc. The venue for this seminar will be Building 4, Chiswick Park –
again details and registration forms can be found on the website. Places are restricted, so I urge you to
book soon to secure a place. There are only a few seats left for this training.
The next evening meeting will be held at 18:30hrs on Tuesday 7th October at the Geological Society as
usual. The presentation scheduled is “ Multiphase fluid flow properties of fault rock: Implications for
petroleum production/ Fault rock Petrophysics” to be presented by Majeed Shar and Javed Haneef.
Both Majeed and Javed are recipients of LPS grant awards.
Volunteers Needed. We are starting to look forward to our Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 4th No-
vember where we will present the LPS 2015 Executive Committee for the approval of the membership.
The Committee will need additional help in 2015, so if you would like to volunteer some of your valuable
time to assist in the running of the LPS, our Past-President, Mike Millar, would really like to hear from
you ([email protected], 0118-929-3404).
Finally, I would like to invite suggestions for themes you might like to propose for one day seminars next
year. Please send me a mail directly with any suggestions you might have or pass suggestions on to one
of the committee at one of our meetings. [email protected]
I look forward to seeing you at some of the events above.
All the very best.

On Thursday 25th September 2014 the London Petrophysical Society will be holding a one-day seminar entitled Drilling-101; Everything a Geoscientist needs to know about Well Engineering but was afraid to ask at the Geological Society, Burlington House, London. This is the latest in our line of "Basic FE" seminars, and is intended as an introduction to Well Engineering for Petrophysicists and other Geoscientists. This one-day seminar will provide a basic understanding and vocabulary for professionals from a wide-variety of backgrounds and it should work to improve the way we can work together as a team to achieve safe and successful wells.
