MI in a Nutshell
10
MI stands for Multiple Intelligences, a concept introduced by
the Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner. In his book Frames
of Mind, he suggested that we do not possess a single
intelligence, but a range of “intelligences” (Gardner,1983).
At that moment, he listed 7 types of intelligences (Musical/
rhythmical, Verbal/linguistic, Visual/Spatial/Bodily/kinaesthetic,
Logical/mathematical,Intrapersonal and Interpersonal.
Gardner has since added and eight intelligence which he calls
Naturalistic intelligence (Gardner, 1993) to account for the
ability to recognise and classify patterns in nature;Daniel
Goleman has added a ninth “emotional intelligence”
(Goleman, 1995) This includes the ability to empathise, control
impulse and self-motivate.

A visual representation such as a poster
A PowerPoint presentation for the visual-spatial learners
A skit or role-play for the students who are better fit for bodily-kinesthetic learning
can be allowed so that they may move about.
Interpersonal students may choose to work with partners or small groups,
Interpersonal students may choose to work independently.
The linguistic learners can create a poem or write a speech
The musical learners can create a song or perform a rap-type poem
