Who are we?
Representatives of
Urrbrae’s Environmental Focus Group
History URRBRAE - the name given by
Peter Waite to his home property.
(Urrbrae house and the surrounding
land)
Peter Waite was a prominent
agriculturalist in the early years
of the 20th century.
In the 1930s, Waite donated
his property to South Australia in two parcels.

Student Voice - Committees
Urrbrae has 3 student centred committees - SRC – Involved in Curriculum Planning
- Student Well Being – uniform, canteen,
- Team Support Group – offer support for students,
raise awareness of negative bullying behaviour
- Environmental Focus Group – involved in a range of
Environmentally based projects in the school and in
the community.

Valuing Student Voice Give us as STUDENTS a say in how the school is run,
allowing us to put our mark on school policies as
most of them effect us.
If student ideas are acted upon is gives us a lot
more incentive to participate.

What Are We Doing?

Initial planting the
Urrbrae Wetland
Recycling Stations – ZERO WASTE

These were very successful and they are still
ongoing
PRESENT
Biogas Project
- Collecting waste from the piggery.
- then capturing the harmful gasses produced preventing
them from being released into the atmosphere.
Environmental Focus Group Students assisted in writing a grant to
expand this project
Sensory Plant Trail Develop a sensory plant trail
This will be part of the Urrbrae Trails Project – Allowing
visiting primary school students the chance to touch, feel, see
and taste some of our amazing native plants including

Community Work There are a range of excursions / camps that occur each year
which students can be involved in:

Wombat Surveying Traveling to Sedan to assist Adelaide PHD students in Wombat research
World Environment Day Adelaide Botanic Gardens
Urrbrae Students assist presenters in running their workshops.
Kids Teaching Kids Attend and participate in the Conferences.
Holding our own KTK event at the Urrbrae Wetland
Minton Farm Students assist in revegetation of farm
land to create a Koala sanctuary.
FUTURE
Continuing and developing past projects
For Example: Extend the Biogas Project - Incorporate cattle yard waste, canteen and home Ec. Scraps.
- Burn the methane produced in a flarer, to convert to CO2 which is 20 times less damaging.
- EVENTUALLY – use methane to power the piggery and aquaculture tanks
Encourage new students to be involved in
Youth Voice groups to ensure their
presence and place within the school
