Urea-Triazone N Characteristics and Uses
John G. ClappDirector, Technical Agricultural Products, Research and Development,Tessenderlo Kerley, Inc., 310 Clapp Farms Road, Greensboro, NC 27405
Urea-triazone nitrogen (N) is a stable solution re-sulting from a controlled reaction in aqueousmedium of urea, formaldehyde, and ammoniawhich contains at least 25% total N. This N sourcecontains no more than 40%, nor less than 5%, oftotal N from unreacted urea and not less that 40%from triazone. All other N shall be derived fromwater-soluble dissolved reaction products of theabove reactants. It is a source of slowly availableN. The rate of mineralization of urea-triazone isabout 66% that of urea after 8 days when incor-porated in a Munjor sandy loam. Ammonia vola-tilization losses of N applied as urea-triazone wereabout 41% of those from urea on a Cecil sandyloam in the first week after application. N leach-ing losses through saturated Yolo loam columnsof urea-triazone were about two thirds that of ureaor nitrate N. This N source has proven to be a saferand more effective material for direct applicationon plant foliage. Tomato growth was enhancedwith foliar application of urea-triazone relative tothat obtained from ammonium nitrate or urea. Thestability of this N source from potential losses viaammonia volatilization and nitrate leaching whensoil applied is also documented by results fromuniversity trials.
