201 7 Board of Directors
a message from the director
2017 was another successful year for the Untied Way of the Bradford Area, Inc. While we initially announced that the 2017 campaign came up just $3,200 shy of the goal, we were so fortunate to have anonymous donors come through to ensure we not only met that goal, but surpassed it by $1,994! The amount of money raised in our community is a great accomplishment, and I’m so grateful for the generosity bestowed upon the UWBA. In our sixth year managing the Smethport Campaign for United Way, we again surpassed the $17,000 goal! And, in our sec-ond year managing the Port Allegany Campaign for United Way, we saw a 15% increase in giving, with those efforts also surpassing goal! We are so proud of the support given for the programs and services funded by your generosity, all of which will greatly impact our area. In March, the organization contracted Michael Brand, MNO, to assist staff and board with developing a strategy screen (using a real-time strategic planning methodology). We continue to use that screen to analyze trends and data, set-ting criteria for our decision-making processes and planning for the future of the UWBA. This year also saw the launch of the Student United Way at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Through the work of student leadership, and under the guidance of Dr. Jim Evans (Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs) and Lindsay Retchless (Director of Alumni Relations), this affinity group will be tasked with encouraging charitable giving and philanthropic responsibilities while managing the distribution of funds raised. While still in its infancy, I am very excited about the potential of this group and the impact it will make on our community! One of the biggest accomplishments of 2017 was the implementation of 2-1-1, a comprehensive information and referral system to connect our residents in need with the vast array of health, human and social services that already exist in McKean County. Due to successful United Way campaigns and a partnership with McKean County, a person in need now simply has to dial three numbers (211) to reach a professional resource navigator who will connect them with the right agency to assist with their challenges. This service is available to all residents of McKean County 24/7. Individuals seeking assistance can also conduct their own search for services by logging on to pa211nw.org. Or, consumers can text the contact center (which is housed in Franklin, PA) by texting their need and zip code to 898-211. United Way is pleased to bring this service to our community. McKean County now joins a regional, state and nation-wide movement. Since the beginning of 2017, the northwest region of the Commonwealth has taken major steps towards completing the alignment of this system state-wide, with 7 of the 12 counties now integrated. Our county’s breakdown for September through December is as such: three text messages were sent and 60 calls were made (51 during on-peak hours; 9 during off-peak hours). Of those 60 calls, 25 were from Bradford; 10 from Kane, 6 from Port Alle-gany, 5 from Smethport, 2 from Mt. Jewett, 1 each from Eldred, Hazel Hurst, Ludlow and Rixford, and six were non-reported. This service also aligns with our mission of improving the lives in the areas we serve. It benefits any resident seeking as-sistance. It improves the efficacy of our non-profit service delivery system. And, it will generate a wealth of data for non-profits and local government so they can make more informed decisions regarding social services. I continue to be amazed by the collaboration in our community, and am proud to partner with so many great organizations to bring the residents of McKean County the best programs and services. I look forward to more successes, but I also embrace the challenges that will come with those. I thank everyone who had a role in making 2017 a year of growth for the UWBA.
Dear United Way friends;
With much gratitude,
financesjuly 1, 2016- june 30, 2017
