Game 2: RH Matt Andriese (3-2, 3.24) vs. RH Edinson Volquez (8-4, 3.48)

RAY MATTER—Last night’s rainout was the Rays first of the season, 39th all-time, second at Kauffman Stadium…the Rays snapped their season-high 7-game losing streak with Sunday’s 8-1 win at Yankee Stadium…the 8 runs were their most in a game since a 9-5 win on May 31 at BAL…it snapped the Rays streak of 17 games without scoring more than 5 runs…the Rays dropped 2 out of 3 to the Yankees to start this 7-game, two-city trip…the Rays scored 2 runs in the 1st inning Sunday to run their record to 31-8 (.795) when scoring first, best record in the AL…the Rays scored a season-high 3 unearned runs in that win…the Rays are 3-11 since June 21 when they were a season-high 10 games over .500…the Rays were in first place and a season-high 2 games up in the AL East on June 23, but are 2-9 since…5 of those losses came in the 9th inning or later.

ROSTER MOVES—The Rays announced the following roster moves this morning…OF Steven Souza Jr. has been placed on the 15-day DL with a right finger laceration and 1B/OF/DH John Jaso has been reinstated from the DL, where he has been for the past 87 days with a left wrist contusion…he played 3 innings in LF for Triple-A Durham last night and was 0-for-2…to accommodate Jaso’s addition to the 40-man roster, the Rays designated RH Preston Guilmet for assignment…the Rays also named RH Matt An-driese as their 26th man for the second game of the doubleheader, and he will start the game…this will be Andriese’s fourth tour with the Rays this season, his third call-up….the Rays have now made 10 roster moves in the past 14 days and 83 since Opening Day.

DL REACHES 20—With OF Steven Souza Jr. joining the 15-day disabled list today, the Rays have now made 20 moves to the disabled list involving 18 different players…only the Rangers (21) have had more DL stints.

SOUZA ONLY THE FIFTH—With his disabled list trip keeping him inactive until at least July 20, OF Steven Souza Jr. will be just the 5th AL rookie in the last 20 years to reach 15 HR at the All-Star break…he will finish one behind Evan Longoria (16 in 2008) for most HR by a Rays rookie at the break…he could also become the first rookie to lead his team in HR and SB at the break since CIN Gary Redus in 1983.

TWO IN ONE—Today will be the 24th doubleheader (traditional or split) in Rays history made necessary by yesterday’s rainout…it’s their first double-header of the season…all-time the Rays are 4-10-9 in doubleheaders (tra-ditional or split) with sweeps at BOS (in 2014), at PHI (in 2012), at MIN (in 2011) and at BAL (in 2008)…the Rays are 3-6-9 in split doubleaders…the Rays played 14 doubleheaders (0-7-7) before finally winning one in 2008.

TV NEWS—Sun Sports will televise only Game 2 today…instead of televis-ing the opener, they will pick up the Aug 18 game vs. Houston. TRENDING UPWARD—The Rays 43-41 (.512) record is .068 pct. points better than last year on this date (40-50, .444)…only two AL teams have shown greater improvement from a year ago: Houston (.176 points) and Minnesota (.082 points)…the Rays are 8 games better than their 84-game mark from a year ago (35-49).

KINGS OF THE ROAD—This road trip began a stretch in which the Rays play 13 of 16 on the road…the Rays are a major league best 22-14 (.611) on the road and are the only team in the AL East with a winning road re-cord…the Rays are 12-5 on the road since May 30…since June 2, 2014, the Rays are 52-32 on road and 45-58 at home…the Rays have the majors’ best road record since 2010 (239-203, .542).

NOTHING BUT THE BEST—The Rays final 10 games before the All-Star break are against teams currently in first place (New York, Kansas City and Houston)…the Rays are 25-24 vs. teams over .500.

THE RAYS WAY—The Rays are the only AL team averaging under 4.0 runs per game with a winning record…the Rays have scored 306 runs and al-lowed 304, both fewest in club history after 84 games…Rays relievers have thrown a major-league-high 283.1 innings and have a major-league-most 34 saves…opponents are batting .232 vs. the Rays, lowest in the majors…the Rays have led the AL in opponents’ average in four of the last five years.

RAYS AND THE ALL-STAR GAME—Yesterday, Rays pitchers Chris Ar-cher and Brad Boxberger were named to the 2015 American League All-Star Team to be held July 14 at Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park…they are two of 35 players chosen to the game who are age 27 or younger, and two of 28 first-time All-Stars… in the Rays era (since 2008), the Rays have had 15 different players named to the All-Star Team, and none of them had been an All-Star prior to joining the organization…of those 15, eight are pitchers…only three teams have had as many different pitchers selected since then…the Rays have had a starting pitcher named to the team in each of the last six seasons; only three teams have streaks as long: San Francisco (8), Seattle (7) and Detroit (7).

Most All Star Pitchers Since 2008Oakland (10) Gray, Doolittle, Kazmir, Balfour, Colon, Cook, G. Gonzalez, Bailey, Cahill, DuchschererPittsburgh (10) Burnett, Cole, Melancon, Watson, Grilli, Locke, Hanrahan, Correia, Meek, Duke Tampa Bay (8) Boxberger, Archer, Price, Shields, Rodney, Kazmir, Moore, Soriano St. Louis (8) Rosenthal, Wacha, Neshek, Wainwright, Carpenter, Mujica, Lynn, Franklin

UNBLEMISHED IN ALL-STAR PLAY—Rays pitchers have never allowed a run in an All-Star Game in 10 innings…it is the longest current scoreless streak by an AL or NL team in All-Star Game competition.

RAYS vs. ROYALS—The Rays have lost 8 of their last 9 games here, the lone win a 1-0 decision on April 8, 2014…through the first 14 years of this series (1998–2011), the Rays led the all-time series 65-48, their best mark vs. an AL opponent, but their 5-14 mark over the last three seasons (2012-14) is their worst mark vs. an AL foe…KC has outscored the Rays 104-52 over that stretch…the Rays have gone 11 games since they last had 10-plus hits in a game vs. the Royals on May 1, 2013…it’s also been 13 games since they last stole a base on Aug 22, 2012…KC has swiped 14 since then.

AC IN KC—Asdrubal Cabrera has a .354 (86-for-243) career average at Kauffman Stadium, 2nd all-time among visiting players (min. 200 AB) be-hind Ichiro Suzuki (.370)…his 86 hits at KC are his 2nd most in any park behind his 462 at Progressive Field…he has 29 multi-hit games there…only 12 players all-time have had more, including only 4 active players…six others are in the Hall of Fame.

SAME GUY, DIFFERENT UNIFORM—Tonight’s Game 2 starter Edinson Volquez will start against the Rays for his fourth different team…he started against the Rays for Cincinnati (2011), San Diego (2013) and Pittsburgh (2014) and is 2-0 with a no decision…the all-time leader in that department against the Rays is Mark Redman, who made starts against the Rays for six different teams between 2000-06: KC, PIT, OAK, FLA, DET and MIN.

RAYS ROOKIES—Tonight Matt Andriese will make the Rays major-league-high 39th start by a Rays rookie this season…Rays rookies are a combined 15-14 with a 3.89 ERA (284.2-IP, 123-ER)…15 wins are also a major league high this season…the Rays have used a major-league-most 16 rookies, 9 of those pitchers…Rays have six rookies on the current roster.

WEB GEMS—SS Asdrubal Cabrera and 3B Evan Longoria have com-bined to make only 6 errors, fewest of any 3B-SS combo in the majors…Miami’s Martin Prado and Adeiny Hechavarria are 2nd with 9…both Ca-brera and Longo are leading the major leagues in fielding pct. among their respective positions…Cabrera’s last error was May 24—that’s 36 games without one since…2B Logan Forsythe has made only 2 errors, matching the fewest among all major league second baseman with 60 or more starts. ODORIZZI UPDATE—Last night, RH Jake Odorizzi (left oblique strain) made his second and what is expected to be his final rehab appearance…he worked 5.2 innings (2-H, 0-R, 1-BB, 6-SO) in Class-A Charlotte’s 4-0 win over Palm Beach (Cardinals)…in his 2 rehab starts for Charlotte he worked 9.2 innings (4-H, 1-R, 1-ER, 2-BB, 6-SO).

Ê ON THE SHELF—He became the 5th Rays major leaguer (6th time) to undergo Tommy John surgery…followed Isringhausen (2009), RH Tyler Walker (2006), RH Seth McClung (2003) and RH Dave Eiland twice (2002, 2001)…from that list, Moore was the first to start in his return to the majors…McClung was the only other to return to majors with the Rays, and he made his return in relief…Isringhausen returned in relief with NYM, Walker in relief with SF and Eiland did not return…RH Alex Cobb an-nounced his decision to undergo Tommy John surgery on May 8.

Ê Prior to Moore, the only team to go longer than the Rays since their last Tommy John surgery on a big leaguer was Milwaukee, according to the Hardball Times website…their last was RH Da-vid Riske, just two weeks before Isringhausen.
