RELIGIOUS MONUMENTS IN KARPENISSI

Monastery of Panagia ProusiotissaThe historical Monastery of Panagia Prousiotissa (or Prousou) is dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary and celebrates on August 23th, on the leavetaking of the Assumption. It is one of the most important pilgrimage centers of Orthodoxy and attracts many believers from every corner of Greece. The holy image of Our Lady is alleged to be the work of Luke the Evangelist. The present church was built in 1754 on the ruins of two earlier temples. The monastery suffered several attacks during the Turkish occupation.

Monastery of Domiana It is located in the village of Domiana and dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin

Mary. Part of the beautiful monastery was built in the 16th century. According to the tradition, the monastery was built there because the holy image of Panagia Domianitissa was found on the branches of a large oak which exists until today near the church.

Monastery of Vraha – Metamorfosis Sotiros It is located on the place Kastri near the village of Vraha, north of Karpenissi. It is a historical monastery built or rebuilt in 1745. It served as a shelter for the independence fighters of the 1821 Greek Revolution. In 1956 it was marked as a historical preserved monument of the state.
