“The good thing is that whensomeone in the communityneeds breast milk, she is one of
those willing to donate. Sowhatever you have given them, they are quick to give back,” aniSabalvaro.
Sa kasalukuyan, 26 nabarangay sa lungsod ang mayBreast-feeding Patrols.
Ani Sabalvaro, marami samga boluntir ang may kom-piyansa nang tumulong sa iba.
“They feel empowered be-cause of the knowledge impart-ed to them. They have becomeassertive,” aniya.

Fil-Am comedienne enlivens ‘Mixology’
Gonzaga’s father hails fromCebu; her mother is Dutch. Theactress-comedienne was born inthe United States, and grew upin Modesto, California. Sheused to dress up as her Ce-buano grandmother, completewith “wrinkles” drawn on herforehead— and proudly showedoff her impersonation to neigh-bors. In hindsight, she said, shedidn’t do her grandma justice. But that was indeed an earlysign that she wanted to pursuecomedy.
Gonzaga performed in LosAngeles comedy clubs and inUS military bases in South Ko-rea, some time after gaining aBA in Political Science and aminor in Chinese. She eventual-ly appeared in the Seth MacFar-lane film Ted, had parts in theshows In Gayle We Trust and Le-
thought that I was so old-fash-ioned. I was so embarrassed be-cause I was trying to be respect-ful. We laughed and I was like,“We’re not doing this anymore!”
But yeah, I’ve been to thePhilippines twice and hopefullyI would be able to go again. When my family goes, they gofor about a month. I’m luckyenough to have a lot of cousins… we have a lot of big celebra-tions. It was fun. And I knowhow to karaoke!
Who are your comedic andacting influences, and which
of their works are favorites?I love Sacha Baron Cohen
and I love Borat. I’ve never trieddoing what he did in Borat buthe’s definitely someone I love.Gene Wilder in Willy Wonkaand the Chocolate Factory. And[the late] Philip Seymour Hoff-man—I really love The Master. And I love Cate Blanchett inBlue Jasmine.
What makes Mixology dif-ferent and to whom will it ap-peal to?
It takes place in one night. Inthis show, the pacing is reallyfast and it has to focus on dif-ferent characters every episode. It’s very fresh and new, fun forus as actors, and I think also forthe audience. But as far as theaudience goes, you don’t haveto be in our age group to lovethis show.
It really is just anyone whohas had trouble or who havetried or have experience in try-ing to find a date, or love. It’sso funny to me, the way thatpeople become wheneverthey’re approaching people atbars or when they’re trying tohook up with someone. Every-one embarrasses themselves …
and I think everyone can relateto that.
How would you describeMaya, your lawyer character?
She’s definitely edgythroughout the show but shesoftens up a little bit and it’svery unique to see what makesher do that, which is what Ilove about the progression ofher character. I think she’s real-ly well-rounded because she’sfierce but she still has humanityto her because she’s lonely.
How authentic are the dat-ing situations in the show?
What’s funny about the showis that we heighten everythingthat happens in real life. How-ever, even when watching it,and I see some of the really out-rageous things that happen inour show, it’s almost true to reallife … it actually becomes fun-nier because even charactersthat are super-weird or thosebehaving totally inappropriately,as much as it seems over-the-top, I have seen it in person! Some [parts] are definitelyblown out of proportion butsome of the craziest things areactually grounded on way toomuch truth! (Laughs.)
git, and guest-voiced a fewtimes in MacFarlane’s animatedseries Family Guy.
What was it like growingup as a half-Filipino? Do youknow the customs?
It was great growing up … itmade me feel really special andit was a very big part for me.Even when I was getting intocollege, that’s what my essaywas about, being Filipino andbeing mixed. With the customs,I don’t know if I know every-thing but I definitely know howto make a lot of the food. Iknow how to roll the “lumpia”and all that. It’s funny, the lasttime I went to the Philippines, you know when you take some-one’s hand and put it on yourforehead? I forgot what thatwas called but when I did thatto one of my relatives, they all

Fitness tilt reinvents pageantsBy Armin P. Adina
THE TERMS “body fatpercentage” and “ide-al height-to-weight ra-tio” are not usuallyassociated with beau-ty contests, whose cri-teria often includebeauty of face and fig-ure. But the Miss Biki-ni Philippines pageantis reinventing the waythese competitions arebeing conducted.
Because thepageant seeks aspokesperson for Slim-mers World Interna-tional’s (SWI) advoca-cy of promoting a fit
and healthy lifestyle, applicants arescreened using a set ofcriteria different fromthe usual beauty con-tests’ requirements.
The aspirants’ fig-ures are scrutinizedusing scientific mea-sures such as body fatpercentage, and theproportions of thebody parts are care-fully inspected, aswell as the appear-ance of cellulite.
Beauty of face, asa criterion, also incor-porates an inspectionof the condition ofthe ladies’ skin.
But the ladiesseemed unfazed withthe strict require-ments of the MissBikini Philippines asover 200 applicationswere posted for thisyear’s edition.
