10. Studying for MD1It may sound simple, but each lecturer isdifferent and you need to adjust your studyapproach to them. There will be 3 types oflecturers:TYPE 1:  You will only see them once in the entireyear.

Page 5: The12 Things I Wish I Knew asAn MD1 - UMMSS International … · 2018. 8. 30. · I Wish I Knew as an MD1 The University of Melbourne Medical Students Society (UMMSS) presents: A

Basically be aware of the main points of thelecture. They are usually nice to point out whatthey want you to know.

TYPE 2: You will see them for 1 exam-block.Adjust to their style and pay some attentionbecause they will make quite a few examquestions.

TYPE 3: You will see them throughout theyear. For my year it was mainly Angela(pathology), Roy (microbiology), GrahamParslow (biochemistry) and Jenny (anatomy).Learn how to study for them! It will pay offin the long run. Below is an example on myapproach:

ANATOMY:If you are struggling to write down everything

Jenny Hayes in Anatomy says, in retrospective, theNetter’s Anatomy Flashcard were quite sufficient& succinct for the exams. She used the same

pictures on the flashcards. Lectopia can be helpfulyou are the kind who learn by re-listening!

PATHOLOGY/HISTOLOGY:Histology and Pathology lectures strongly

overlapped with the Histopathology Practicals. Before each Practical, go through the lecture

notes one more time, and you might find it easier. You may also want to pay attention to the

repeated material, because they are more likelyto expect you to know it for the exam.

MICROBIOLOGYRoy’s Microbio/Infectious Disease Lectures: youneed to know almost everything he SAYS, so begood at typing fast or listen to the lecturesagain. Again, you often find the informationrepeated in the Microbiology Practicals.

BIOCHEMISTRYGraham Parslow’s Learning Objectives: pay

attention to the learning objectives. Sometimesthey may not even appear anywhere else in the

lecture, but they came up on exams.
